Who brings “thank you” holiday gift to the owner of their permission

One of the things I use to do when I hunted private land in Utah and Idaho I would bring all the farmers and ranchers who owned the land a Holiday Season gift. The gifts were usually smoked hams / turkeys or some jerky now and then from a great smoker in Utah. These “thank you” holiday gifts were always appreciated by the farmers and ranchers, and I was always invited back for the following season.

I was living in this region mostly in the 2000s and the appreciation gifts annual cost me between $50 to $100, not cheap, but a small amount to pay when compared the hours of hunting I enjoyed.

Of course, I was always the good guest who respected the access, informing the farmer I was coming, always obeyed their rules, and most of all, safety first.

I am curious who does the above also and what do you do. And if you don’t, why?

I carry $20 gift cards to a local ice cream parlor and my business cards. If I stop at a farm and ask. I hand them both regardless of whether permission is given or not. If they refuse ( or more often they don’t have what I’m looking for) I thank them and ask if they know of some one. I’m competing with the local Amish boys who trap or catch pigeons. I understand they sell them. I think they do this at night using nets. They can clear out a barn in one night.

I take gifts as well. Jt all depends on the farmers to be honest. Some I may take some whiskey, others maybe different styles of cuisine like Mexican, Italian etc. I also greased the wheels of the fire station down the block from me. I cooked both shifts a full Mexican dinner and they donated me an scba tank. I agree that showing appreciation goes a long way plus following the rules.

The guys that have permission to hunt deer(bow and arrow only) on part of my land mow the woods lanes in the summer and bring some processed meat(backstrap, hamburger, and sausage) at the end of the season. They are also very respectful and always text me when they will be on the property. I have a small outbuilding with a bar and pool table that we will sometimes gather at after dark(if there are no shot deer to be tracked) to have some beers and recount the events of their day's hunt, until wives start calling/texting. Their behavior is much appreciated and they are always welcomed back. We all prefer that type arrangement to just cold cash lease.

This is a great topic!

I am really blessed to live in a rural area. Know many landowners and have several permissions. Some all they want is a simple thank you but I always try to do something nice. Our extra garden harvest is shared as is our BBQ sauce. Then there is gooseberry Jam that makes a hit. One place is very special. Waterfowl hunt it and actually anything I want to do. Fish, trap, deer , Dove etc. One stipulation though. I am in charge of things like this. When anyone asks the farmer to utilize the place he gives them my number. They call me for permission to hunt his place? I mean really? If I know them and trust them or even want to take them it is up to me. Said if I don't want them there say no and do not feel bad about it. I walk in many places or use my ATV. He says how come you don't just drive your truck to your places. I said because of ruts or maybe getting stuck. His response. If you get stuck I have a tractor and can pull you out. Then next time you know what conditions that was and not to do it again. I mean really? Know the combinations to his locked gates and keys for the other ones. Can use large air conditioned and heated his shop if I need too. Dang! really, really, really blessed.

@l.leon cool to hear about the bicycle too...I am sure when you cycle you let your wife do all the work. ;). You hold the gun for ride-bys pesting. ;)

Also, one of your fears can be settled. With the owner of one of your permissions accepting garlic, at least you know they aren’t vampires.

Funny... but true about the garlic... I rat at this place at night... knowing they’re not vampires definitely helps...
