Which slug work for you in regular superior liner in .30 cal?

I have a 700mm STX Superior. This is a 10 shot 100 yard group with NSA 49.5gr. @ 962fps.

Did some tuning and pellet/slug testing over the weekend with my Maverick .30 700MM standard superior. With the 1st reg @ 175 and 2nd @ 133, I tested the NSA sample pack, FX Hybrids, Exact 44.7 gr pellets at 50 yds. The 47 gr slugs grouped best for me out of all the slugs. I had the wheel on 7 for all the slugs, then turned it to 6 for the best pellet groups.

All these results with a superior STX liner, right? If so then why there is a superior heavy liner if a regular one works pretty good with slugs? Are there anyone with a superior heavy liner in .30?

superior is meant for hybrids and pellets, it doesn’t mean it won’t shoot some slugs very well it’s just the stability factor is a lot lower because superior has much slower twist rate compared to superior heavy. Faster twist rate is needed for longer slugs and slower speed but it will mess up accuracy of most pellets.

not having optimal stability spin does not mean bad groups but COULD degrade the BC and/or affected more by wind and turbulence. This could also mean when shooting slugs with sub optimal spin the trajectory might not match with ballistic calculator but not everyone uses that all the time. If you are getting sub MOA groups at 100 yard then don’t fix what ain’t broken!

in summery superior heavy is for slugs only and shoot slugs with optimal stability and BC or best slug performance. Superior is for pellets and CAN shoot some slugs well.

I have the superior heavy and after spending hundreds ( different grains)and thousands (61.5Nsa )slugs with different tunings i am using 61.5 Nsa and the results are amazing for my needs .I can confirm that during the tests I have many half moa groups as well at 70 yards with the Nsa 49.5 grains

But at least for me and my needs I cant go back from 61.5 to 49.5 grains. Is a completely different feeling the 61.5 comparing to the light slugs.

Nothing special with this group in the picture with 61.5 Nsa.Some holes is all over the place .Nothing special until I will tell you that the target is 299 yards away.Shooting with the bipod laying down and using a Caldwell rear back as a rear support. If you notice few shots are up and down while I was trying to deal with elevation in this distance.Few shots left and right trying to hold right for wind( very calm day almost no wind) At least in the end when I was shooting correct 12 shots are inside the 8 inches target.Sorry I dont have any pictures in my phone. from groups at 100 yards.

I am shooting the 61.5 around at 1000 fps at 175 bar.

In the picture of the fx chrony check the string and you can see from shot 37 to 38 is changing the date. That was while I was tunning the gun and trying to adjust the hst to deal with the wellknown regulator leak.I am happy I managed to shoot the first shot at 1002 fps next day ( number 38 shot) .That means that my first shot is inside my es.

Of course during my tests I didnt took so big shot count ,the gun is connected with the scuba bottle with external huma regulator for the scuba bottle adjusted at 240 bar.

In general I am very happy with nsa 61.5 with superior heavy.I have shoot in prractise and different tunings any time since last November around 11000 slugs 61.5.That means from 150 slugs to each box around 73 boxes. With 22 euros per box ( in europe) is around 1610 euros total!!! Equal to a new fx maverick !!!!!. In the picture with the, red arrow somewhere in the last hill is positioned the target . Sorry is not visible. I took this picture while I was enjoying the buty of the field.

Impact 701 you welcome.

Regarding modes everything was possible to get changed from springs, transfer ports in valve house, rear block and brass , hammer weights spacers has been changed. But be sure that many many many times I broke parts in my gun specially valve rod derlins and valve seats .Always I was prepared for the worst scenario and I have from day one many spare parts. Lately I found a balanced tunning that is,working without too much stress even at 175 bar. Most times the problem was estimated in the very strong hit of the valve rod related with the very big spacer (hammer spring driver)on my hammer weight.

Blejda sorry if we highjacked a little bit this topic but one conversation brings the next one ......

Pomkie my barrel is 700 mm superior heavy .

My gun is impact x 3 gen .After changing to big side shot magazine , probe holder with m4 screws both size and cocking block everything is same as an mkii.Regulator for the moment is Amp same to mkii but 3 years I was using huma extra high and I can say that they spoil me too much. For 3 years and i was adjusting usually all time between to 169 and 185 bar I never have a reg leek even if I leave the gun in store for few months. To be more specific I live and working out of my country and I am coming usually every 6 months twice per year. I can say that some times I have a difference 3- 5 bar from the big temperature changes.Lately when I started have problems with huma reg I bought 2 new extra high regs and I didnt manage to install them so I dont think I will try to pay more 100 euros for third time . I faced a problem with the threads of the huma reg body same time that the Amp reg body is going in the action very smoothly but this is a big story and maybe I will open a new topic and I need to email huma for this.

1) valve seat ( last type milled on the vh) has been opened to 7.10 mm.

2) valve road derlin seal has been changed to 7.65 peek material.( nothing from derlin materials black or white or any type can afford big pressures)

3)power plenum is from Michel from poland and really i am finding it much more powerful than fx pp.Only downside is that I have to remove all the air from the gun to remove the barrel and this bothering me a lot.I was between the first 15 orders together with Glem chally and " heavy impact " I think and few other members .I think the latest orders where without this problem .By the way when fx release the pp I bought 2 pieces and I didnt managed to install in my action .The tube of the fx pp is 12 mm and my action clamp full open is 11.98.If you add and little more thickness of the 2 orings 9x1.5 is impossible.I modified one tube and I use it for few weeks.

4) hammer i am using the old type 20 grams with a derlin instead of c3 oring.( I have the new type hammer of pp kit with the black deflin in the head but is 18 grams and didnt gave me the maximum performance.

5) hammer weight( hammer spring driver) i really don't remember the weight .I will try to post it next time I will open the gun.is the heaviest I managed to install with a very big spacer that I dont remember right now( is custom and I made 5 different types)

6) hammer spring is from huma.( not big difference from fx 57mm but it gave few fps more)

7) valve rod retaining spring has been shortened .There is a video from Ernest for this.I followed his dimensions.

8) brass inlet is from huma ( double port) the old type which i opened around 8x8mm.lately i installed huma v2 but almost same performance. No difference with the first type.

9) probe pin type i made it long time before my self in the lathe ( I see the idea from members in AGN) I am shooting only slugs .Still my impact after 3 years didnt shoot even a single pellet. The pin of the probe is the thinnest I manage to do ( I don't have as,well the diameter but this is easy I can measure it today).I adjust the depth of the probe in the barrel by turning the bar above the probe holder few turns. There is a specific position when you cock back the handle. If you pull it a little more and you try to keep it will give you a litter more clearance to insert the magazine .That means deaper position for the pin probe and few fps more( again there is a video from Ernest for this).

10) transfer port in rear block has been opened to 8 mm.

11) the transfer port of the valve house has been opened to 8mm as well.( I mean this one on the top that is connected to rear block). And has been smoothed all the corners inside by a Dremel.

12) I installed a small carbon piece between the shroud and the action to give a little tension in the barrel. And a carbon tube as well all over the shroud.I didnt manage to install the carbon fiber in the liner. The tubes I ordered didnt fit. (Again there is a video guess from who!!!)

I really don't remember if I missed to mention any other mode and next time I will open the gun I will give more details. You are reaching in a point that you are looking for more harmonic tunning and accuracy instead of power.I think the biggest limitation in these high pressures is the function of the regulator.I am trying a lot to deal with this and to learn how my gun behave in the first shots after the usually leaking.

I am comperalitevly very new in pcp world. I started 2015 with a wolverine 303 but since I became a member in AGN I learn a lot and I am trying to read every morning and night from 20 min all the posts that attract my attention. Really there are amazing members on this forum with huge knowledge and I want to give them my biggest thanks.

I hope that you will find useful these informations and I am really apologise one more time to Blejda for the big post .

I didnt mentioned anything regarding HST above because is useless with this hammer weight I am using .The head ( spacer ) is so big that is changing everything comparing to the original from the factory and effect all the function of the power wheel .I mean right now the hst is adjusted much more back (counterclockwise) and the power wheel is working properly in all positions but no sense to give you distance in mm.

Wow you did your homework here. Thanks for sharing with us your slug experiences.I was also thinking about superior heavy but i don't need that much power.
