When less is more

I made a new carbon moderator for my fx impact. 125mm shorter than the original shroud, 8mm smaller Dia, 165grams lighter, 4dB quieter and looks 2 times better.

Looks good, what is the overall length of your sweet Impact.

Thanks, it’s 29.5 inches (750mm) The only reason I made it was, I am trying to find the cause of a very slight accuracy issue I have with my impact, over the chrono it is low single figure spread. Although the factory shroud does not clip, the pellet does not leave bob on centre either, also when I tap it with my finger I can hear a very slight rattle, neither of those are going to help.

I didn’t spend much time making the mod as I was only going to use it for accuracy testing (I haven’t had time to do that yet) I wasn’t expecting it to be very quiet but it is and I didn’t think I would like the look of it either but I do. I have room to make it 4mm bigger in Dia and could reflex it another 3.5” down the barrel, this should make it quieter still without increasing the total length of the gun.

Does look classy BB. What did you make the end pieces out of and would you mind sharing your design? Was that 500 or 600mm barrel? Again nice job.

jk

This particular barrel is 500mm, I make the endcaps out of delrin, I make them a push fit into the tube with shallow groove to give the flexible adhesive something to grip on to. I shrink the delrin in the freezer for 10 mins, then apply the adhesive, when the delrin warms and expands, nothing is going to get it out again..

I generally take more time playing around with baffle spacing, but on this one I just made two flat baffle, two 50mm long cages and one 30mm cage, wrapped in felt, a tried and tested method used by numerous manufacturers.

Not this mod, but this shows my typical mod assembly.

3-D Printed ??? Or milled???

Hoot.

It’s all done on a lathe, I mount a die grinder or a drill onto face plate on the cross slide for the milling, or I use a dremel held in the tool post for all the really small milling cutters.

so long as I take small cuts it’s ok, I index the job held in the lathe with a pin that locks into holes in the chuck face plate.

Great idea on the use of the dremel, Did your lathe already have the holes for the indexing fix? Not sure my old Atlas Craftsman can do that but now I will investigate it. Thanks for the tips..

I used a 72 tooth gear rings to precisely index the chuck every 3rd tooth, then marked the chuck backplate, before removing and drilling 24 holes. Using and index arm it locks the chuck so a can dril/mill 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 or 24 equally spaced holes/slots

Thanks for posting Bb!

My father's little Atlas had a pin to lock the chuck but I don't have one on my lathe. I like your indexing system, I'll see about modifying my machine as well.

Me to - thanks for the pictures Bb!

Was wondering about rigidity. Guessing that with fine stock removal and a gentle feed deflection isn't a concern. How is it for vibration? Do you have any sort of cushion between the clamp and the plastic Dremel body?

I like your jig and will probably copy it (any royalties due ??? LOL!). I was thinking about making a replacement tool holder for the lathe from some extruded aluminum as I would like to be able to adjust the height and angle of the Dremel as well.

Lots of projects and never enough time. :)

To be fair, the dremel is fairly ridged in the tool post ( it’s only hanging out because put it in just for the photo) it only really vibrates with grinding discs that are out of balance. With that in mind, I ordered one of these today, hopefully it will be more industrial.

Very nice - metal shell and a proper chuck! Don't recognize it - do you have a link that you could share so I can look it up?

I have the 1/8" and the 1/4" Dremels that are all plastic with collets. I might see how they might do but the one you posted looks to be more rugged.
