When are slugs worth the cost?

I made a post about this some time ago. My feelings are that slugs in air rifles are nothing but a trending fad and totally unnecessary. My reasons are that you can buy a 22LR, plus certificate and suppressor to shoot bullets for cheaper than airguns. It's easier to get an airgun for pellets plus 22LR for bullets and it's cheaper than buying a high-end PCP configured to shoot slugs.

1. 22LR shooting subsonic bullets offers more range and power (105-110 FPE).

2. 22LR ammo is a lot cheaper than airgun slugs.

3. If the place you are shooting is safe enough to shoot slugs it should be safe to shoot 22LR.

4. Airgun use is for the same small to medium game and pellets are more than capable of killing the same game for a lot cheaper.

5. A suppressed 22LR is just as quiet and sometimes quieter than a powerful PCP.

Here’s a curveball to ponder on- just found out that here in CA ALL LEAD IS BANNED FOR HUNTING, which I knew, but what I didn’t know, is that it’s banned from target shooting at the ranges, also. So, that means my hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of Sierra, Hornady, and Nosler bullets are no longer good to me.

With that said, it’s a known fact that pellets are overlooked as a contributor of lead being used for hunting. Now, we want to draw more attention to ourselves by shooting slugs out of our guns, and once that gets noticed, they’ll realize that normal lead pellets should be banned, too, cause lead is lead.

Dont know the laws in the other states, just speaking out for the CA folks. I’m gonna agree with BlackDiesel, where if a pellet gets the job done, and has been for years, why jump to a slug, say on a squirrel thats 50 yards away? If that’s too far for you to make an ethical shot, move in closer!! If you spook them away, then maybe you need to revisit your tactical skills, or lack of.

Heres a scenario- it’s legal here in CA to hunt Turkey with an Airgun. I believe it’s 20 caliber and greater. You’re out there doing your turkey hunt, but not with pellets, but with slugs. Game warden comes by. Checks out your Airgun to make sure it’s not a 177. He sees 22 caliber slugs. He says lead is illegal to hunt with, you argue back and say it’s a pellet gun. Guess whose looking like the fool in this scenario? He sees bullets, you argue it’s a pellet gun( here’s another thing that cracks me up. Before, if someone like a nephew was over and asks about your pellet gun, you would reply “well, nephew, this here is a high powered precision adult air rifle. But in that scenario with the game warden, the words coming out is that it’s a pellet gun, lol).

gonna stop my rant. I hated when that lead law came into effect. I was willing to give up powder burner hunting in exchange for just target shooting, and now I can’t even do that, unless I re invest in non lead bullets and start the whole search in finding an accurate load.

So, screw that, I’ve got my air rifles to fill that niche. Am I gonna get pissed cause some knucklehead drew attention to our community cause he had to use a slug on a Turkey 25 yards away? And all lead pellets are now forbidden? Wouldn’t you be?
