This is just my opinion so.... and you'll get different views on this subject.
EBR has different COF's.
For BR I'd prefer to use 40x -ish magnification at the fixed distances because I don't like the image starting to dim out like often happens at 50x. I think a fair amount of the higher scoring shooters would use something like a 10-50 variable scope. If it's normal winds a dot reticle would be fine by using the scoring rings for holdoffs. If it's windy I would personally use a reticle with hash marks to gauge holdoffs, and these type of reticles are what I use for all the comps, prefered especially for AFT, and I use FFP scopes as well.
Daylight bright illume could help if a AFT target is shaded.
A thicker reticle isn't a bad thing I guess, just shoot then move the reticle out of the way to see where you hit and go back at shooting again.
The quick solution is - don't use a black bullseye.
