What type of ammo is best for a .22 gamo swarm magnum to hunt smaller game

Hi everyone,

I'm going to buy a gamo swarm magnum to hunt game such as: rabbits, squirrels, pigeons and ducks.

When looking at all the ammo choices Ifelt a bit overwhelmed though. I figured I was going to pick a few and see what my rifle like best but still I need to narrow down the selection.

So my question is, what type of ammo will I likely have most succes with hunting these animals? In terms of type (hollowpoints, domed pointed, polymer tip, weight catagory etc).

I was tempted to simply go for slightly heavier dome shaped pellets like the JSB Match Diabolo Exact Jumbo Heavy .22 Cal or the H&N Baracuda Match .22 Cal, 21.14 Grains, Round Nose, 200ct.

However I also see so many other type of pellets like the polymag, Baracuda Hunter Extreme Pellets, H&N Terminator Pellets, Gamo Rocket .22 Cal etc. Are these types of pellets really better for hunting?

Any feedback would be welcome!

Kind regards, Franz

Edit: I changed the title where before I tpye 45 joule because it was advertised that way on a website I was going to buy from. But based on what I saw after doing some research high 30 or maybe low 40 is as much as can be expected from this rifle. Sorry :p

The power seems atleast somewhat accurate based off on this guys testing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DqlmF7tPlM&t=64s

I calculated his shots and they were about 39joule. However he used quite light pellets. Normally slightly heavier pellets generetate a bit more energy which is why I was considering them. I can imagine that a slighly heavier pellet will do maybe 43 joule, close tot the advertised power.

but I guess 14-16 grain might be better considering he used 12.65 grain bullets.

The reason why I wanted to buy this rifle is because I wanted a break barrel rifle and this one had a magazine and was one of the most powerful break barrel rifles I saw.

ps. after doing a bit more research I see that indeed 40 joule is really about the maximum you can get in terms of power from this rifle.

Excluding big-bores the pellet answer is the same for all airgun, use the pellet with the best grouping at range. It's all about placement and any good airgun is that accurate.

Normally try JSB pellets first up. But after watching a good reviewer :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S0_7y0QOzQ

it would seem that particle rifle liked the FT pellets best and fires 14.6g pellets at about 680fps for somewhere around 14-15fpe or 19j.

Lot's of other rigs reviewed there, might be worth watching a few.

Get a gamo, lot's of fun. Want the standard answer to what is" better" for the same price RWS34.

Your pellet choice sorta of depends on the game you intend to shoot, shot placement and distance you can shoot accurately. For the most part dome pellets will shoot the most accurately and at further distances and are best for head shots. The heavier the pellet you can use will retain down range energy and will penetrate better. For game like rabbits in particular you can take body shots and I would recommend a hollow point. You can take down squirrels too with a well placed hollow point to the chest but they may run some till the expire. I would buy say three types of hollow points and three types of domes sticking with the medium to heavier weight range. I would only choose an lighter weight pellet if shots are in the shorter range of say less than 30 yards. The dome pellets I like are the JSB Jumbo and Jumbo Heavy, Air Arms Diabolo Field 16.0 grain and H&N Baracuda 21.12 grain. For hollow points I like H&N Terminators, Hunter Extreme, Baracuda Hunter and Predator Polymag. Once you start accuracy testing set you targets up at what you think will be you maximum hunting distance. Then see if the selected pellet and your skills will allow you the accuracy to make a kill shot Bill

The reason why I wanted to go for this GAMO was because it has a mag so I don't have to reload after each shot and it is powerful. I already have a weihrauch 50S in .177. It's fun to shoot but not powerful enough for hunting small game.

I'f I'd go for a Hatsan or a Diana I'd choose the Hatsan 135 or the Diana 350 beause they also have the power I'm looking for. But when I compare the 3, the GAMO has extra benefits such as the mag and a scope and it is cheaper. Sure, the Diana or the Hatsan might have a crisper trigger or might be a bit more accurate but I don't think I'm a good enough shooter to make such things matter that much. Atleast, that was my reasoning.

OK, i recommend the two above for the price, but you have a point, only remenber that the rings have to be high for the mag...

What do you do with power and no accuracy, power isn’t everything, just to let you know any 177 or .22 cal pellets @speeds over 1000fps are going to group like a shotgun. I had Gamos in my younger years and they were crap.
Like someone suggested save a bit more and get a better rifle, it’s going to save you a lot of headaches and frustration.
Just my two cents here.

I have a Gamo .22 magnum power, but single shot 1250 grizzly. Advertised at 45 joules but 35 is more realistic , I am testing in cold conditions usually 12 celcius. Favorite pellets are the H&N field target trophy power (copper plated), high penetration, clean. Highest FPE/Joule results came from H&N terminator. But in my view almost any pellet in .22 is going to kill the small critters you mentioned. Like others suggest I'm also saving up for a nice more accurate gun, but I did want this for it's power. Other top power pellets H&N hornet (but very very $$$) , gamo rocket destroyer. Best budget H&N sport Diablo... makes nice holes in things also great power. Slugs were very slow, as were very heavy pellets like JSB Jumbo monster exact Diablo. Worst results for power for me were the H&N barracuda power for normal pellets, got 27J/20FPE. Lead barracuda not much better. Tried slugs 25gr and 30gr. Power was trash, don't waste your money, 20J from 25gr, 13J from 30gr. Hope that helps. I'll try to post a terrible photo of my results

Hope this photo is clear. Green is generally higher number , red is poor.
My top pellets highlighted in yellow..**For Power** Accuracy still to be fully tested.
