What springer to buy?

Weihrauch HW50S would be my recommendation. Super accurate and light.

I own or have owned an R7, R1, hw97k and an hw50s. My main squirrel hunting gun for the past 4 years has been my 12fpe hw97k. It is a big heavy, but a sling fixes that problem easily. I’m really liking the hw50s because of the lighter weight and medium power level. IMHO, you only need 10-12fpe for squirrel hunting out to 50 yards.

Good luck choosing.

My HW95 used to be my favorite for killing squirrels--until I got a used, tuned HW30. This one has a stronger spring, a chopped barrel, and a moderator, thereby making it very quite. I'm killing squirrels at 27 yards with amazing power. The lighter weight makes it a pure joy over the HW97K. I still like, no love, shooting my 95, but don't discount the ability of a tuned HW30.

I bought one of Flying Dragon Air Rifles. The XS-25 SFB. $80.00. Included the full tune $100.00. Rex scope 4 X 32 $60.00. It's basically a R-34 clone. It grouped 5 shots the size of a thumb tack at 24 yards. using 18 grain pellets it averages 658 fps. Surprised me how well it shoots. It will break scopes. It deserves a Hawke AirMax 2-7X32 scope

R eally shocked no one suggested the RWS34.

I agree. That is an excellent option. The 34 is very accurate and has ample power in .22 to kill small game such as a squirrel at 25 yards and beyond. Very easy to work on and tune to your liking as well. As far as trashing a scope.......I'm at around 2000 firing cycles on my current scope right now. No hiccups as of yet. Good luck,

TR

Good guns for general shooting and woods carry?

Diana Model 34 P compact synthetic in .177, good value, adequate power (~13 FPE), excellent trigger, very accurate.

BSA Lightning GRT in .177 or .22, good value, plenty of power (~16 FPE), hunting trigger, accurate.

There are plenty of others but those two will get you on track for a good carry rifle for the woods at a price point you won't be afraid to lean it against a tree.

Arch_E what spring did you put in your 30.

quite the opposite as shown by an American Airgunner episode...

I've had several springers and never noticed any significant velocity change where I live. Granted, I'm in NorCal and I'm talking 40 degrees vs. 80 degrees. Can't speak to those of you who see single digit temps. I know elevation kills power on springers. My Sig is quite effected by temperature. I just shot a 5 shot average today of 847 fps with the 14.8 gr Crux lead. Gun temp was 67 degrees. When the gun is up closer to 80 degrees 860 fps is the norm. You have a weblink for that American Airgunner piece ?

I seen some of the video. Only thing I would conclude is the springers lube hardens up causing more drag. Maybe piston/cylinder metal contraction also creates more drag. The gas-spring nitrogen gas charge expands when warmed up. Result is an increase in cocking effort that I've noticed. That means faster piston travel speed. Higher compression is the result which I've documented definitely increases velocity. When mine is colder the gas charge pressure decreases. Result....velocity loss.

I did a test back on 9/5/19 where the guns receiver tube temperature was 82 deg. Shot An average of 1066 fps with the 9.6 gr Crux alloy. Today with the receiver tube reading of 67 deg averaged 1042 fps with the same pellet.
