What rifles have you converted to pistols?

I didn't buy the BSA JSR back then because money was running a bit short but I bought one last weekend, it's the 12fpe version. This is to be my PFT pistol.

I tend to wait until the last minute to do things. In this case it's attempting to make a HFT/PFT custom stock for next months state match. A good friend wants me to fashion a stock out of some type of wood or laminate instead of butchering the factory stock on this rifle but I'm not sure I'm up to the task, lol.

Another friend gave me a walnut blank but it's only 1.5" wide so I don't think that will work??!!

Have any of you guys got any leads on a wood blank I could use/buy, thanks?

Here's my converted BSA Ultra JSR PFT pistol which started out as a youth rifle.

I chickened out, lol!!! Sorry Bobby but I couldn't find it within myself to take on the walnut stock project from scratch. I got to looking at the walnut blank that was given to me and it's warped, also not as thick to use for what I had in mind so I'm giving it back to Kent.

First thing I realised when holding the rifle before I did anything was that the highest part of the rear most of the trigger guard was so close to the grip that my fingers couldn't get up high enough to be comfortable so I lopped off the trigger guard with the dremel just behind the trigger. That problem was solved.

I then dremeled out a thumb rest you see in the photo which is just below the back of the bolt high up on the grip, and also fashioned the back and right side of the grip to fit my hand perfectly, part of that was making a shelf for my palm to rest on which it does nicely. You can see this in the photo. Sanded all that with 60 grit then 220 grit and stained the bare wood with ebony stain for some contrast.

I didn't think about it until I got to shooting the gun but because the cocking force is substantial I can use the back of the top of the palm rest to push against when I cock the gun. It actually helps a lot so that was a plus!

Speaking of substantial - I turned the HST all the way up and got 890 fps with jsb .177 8.44 grain pellets which is almost 15fpe. So I kept turning it back down until I got 792 average fps which is just shy of 12fpe and which is the power limit in the PFT. The gun came from the factory at 10.3 fpe.

I adjusted everything on the trigger I could and got most of the take up eliminated, then adjusted the trigger weight as light as it would go, as well as the sear engagement. It was probably 4lbs as set from the factory and now it's 15oz with a crisp break. I might cut a coil off the trigger weight spring later on but it's much better than before.

I've got maybe 2.5 hours of labor into the pistol so far.

It's pretty darn accurate. It wasn't any problem touching shots on paper sub 1/4" or knocking down my crow target with a 1/2" KZ at 17 yards this morning.

The 6-24 Athlon Argos is temporary but I have been using it on 12x.

Now to get my dope down and practice.

I'll update with groups, etc, in the next couple weeks.

I shot some more today. Winds were a gusty 8-14 mph mostly full value. It's a pifle alright, it doesn't miss much even in these winds, I'm impressed with it's precision.

That's the tripod, etc, I use in Freestyle division. It's not as steady as it looks but it sure helps me in getting my dope down.

It's hard to make out the 25Y bird FT target to the left of the flag, it has a 3/4" KZ in the body and a 5/8 KZ in the head, and it's my sight in distance. Other targets are 13Y with 1/2 and 5/8 KZ, 30Y with 1" KZ hole and 1.25" reset, and 35Y is a 1.5" KZ and same size reset. FS in the background and that's my road so no cars or neighbors will be harmed.

Bonus pic of my dog Samson. This was taken earlier by our new trail camera. We have elk, deer, and not sure what else coming in. Fun experiment for my wife and I!

Thanks!

I'm glad somebody besides myself likes it, lol!

I think most people thinks it's a total hack job and that wouldn't be far from the truth. I'm surprised they haven't put a pic of it in the ugliest airgun thread 😆

But it sure gets the job done well thus fulfilling my purpose.

I can't afford a Thomas PFT gun and I'm glad I didn't settle for a lessor gun than this one so here I am with this thing.

Hey Steve, sounds like that's working out well for you. Looks like a good platform for the purpose.

When you used the term "hack job" it reminded me that I have a very early entrant in the rifle to pistol genre. Not my work and it's got a bit of "folk art" vibe to it but a trailblazing effort. Just thought I'd reset your benchmark for ugly.

A Benjamin Model G pistol...

OK I'm wandering off the reservation here...not pneumatic, and not made by me, so not really responsive to the question!

But hey old springers are my thing, and this one demonstrates that converting rifles into pistols is not a new idea. It's a German-made BSF S20, a design dating to the mid-1950's - this one prolly manufactured in the 60's sometime. The action is BSF's small "Junior" rifle of the day...with a pistol rear sight, nice short tapered barrel, and a "bullpupped" trigger so that it all drops into the neat wood grip/frame (green arrow is the sear; you can see it move when you pull the trigger).

FWIW, one of these guns belonging to a childhood friend was the first serious Euro-springer I ever saw...obviously, the lust it inspired hasn't worn off yet, LOL. For many years the S20 had the rep of being the hottest air pistol around - Smith clocked it at 472 fps in his classic 1957 book.

Just giving a recent report on my BSA JSR converted to a Pifle.

Of course when I finally decided to get a pistol for PFT matches... our club opted to omit the usual and annual PFT match 😵😬, so I haven't shot the thing hardly at all once I found out that the match wasn't happening.

Until lasted weekend when camped out at our local FT match. The next day some friends and I plinked for hours and thought I should blow the dust off the Pifle. I hadn't shot it past 35Y yet so I shot it at """60Y""" since at the time that was the closest paper target we had out at the moment. The reason for that was a friend was getting his dope down for a EFT event for this weekend with his 45fpe 22.

I shot 3 fills worth which equates to 90 shots using JSB 8.4's at 792 fps. This Pifle shot great for what it is, basically the vertical was 1.25" for 10 shots. I had a couple 5 shot groups when the wind hadn't changed yet that were less than an inch which was cool to see. But I could hit a dog food can 90% of the time at this distance which I will try to do for the fun of it next year when the FT season starts up here in the high country again.

A couple things I learned were #1; Being unregulated I need to stay within the sweet spot of the fill because mid fill hits higher. And #2; I need to clip a coil off the trigger spring to lighten it, it's just heavy enough right now to be annoying, even though it's as light as I can get it being 15oz, hopefully I can get the trigger down to 7-8oz.
