What is your Backstop made of?

"Ginuwine1969"Ok, I built a backstop with a 3 gallon square bucket, clip board and rubber mulch. There is almost 12 inches of mulch from top to bottom, and I'm shooting a .22 cal 29 FPE from 23 yards and after 3 or 4 clips i see signs of pellet striking the bottom of the bucket. I don't understand I read that 6" deep was enough to stop up to a .25 shooting 50 FPE??? Is there different types of rubber mulch i should be looking for this stuff looks like its for gardening.
I picked up a handful of my mulch and measured the pieces. Almost all pieces are within 1/2"-1" in length, with the maximum thickness being 1/2". This is whatever brand home depot was carrying. And, yes, it is most definitely intended for gardening. :)

You are right, your experience is far from the norm. If your mulch sounds similar to what I described, here are a couple ideas that may be tied to performance.

Do you have the mulch packed tight in your bucket? Most people comment about packing the mulch tight. You don't have to stand on it or anything, but use your hand and compress it a reasonable amount. In addition to providing a denser medium, packing the mulch also ensures you container is full when you tilt it over. What may be happening is that your bucket seems full when upright, but a gap develops at the top when tilted over on the side. If you are now shooting closer to this gap and unrestrained top edge of the mulch, that could result in over penetration, especially after a lot of shots have settled the mulch.

Are you shooting all 3 or 4 mags into the exact same spot? Tunneling seems to be less of a problem with the mulch, but it's not out of the question. My typical shooting is at a sheet of paper with 9 small targets on it. I'll shoot a max of 10 shots at one target spot and then move to the next. I am guessing this 'reshuffles' the mulch each time I move to a new target. Maybe more than 10 shots in one spot is too much.

When I've poked around in my trap, I almost always find pellets from my 22 fpe .22 in the first 2 inches, when shooting 30 yds - 50 yds. I also tried 2 shots of 170fpe rimfire in the exact same spot at 25 yds and found the bullets around 7" deep.

"mister12ax7"My backstops are old tree trunk sections. The critters like 'em too.
Man, I sure wished I had lots of those on logs around here!!! What part of the country is this? If you ever need help with “those critters” let me know.

About back stops, I have had the best luck with my little portable container filled with pea gravel. I just made a night vision scope and I need to scope it in when I put it on or off.
I’ll take shots different places at the yardage that I’ll be shooting, 20-40 yds, and adjust the scope according. Its normally not off but a width of a pellet though.

It cost almost nothing and it stops everything. I have an 25 cal Edgun. I found out that if you leave room for the pea gravel to move, it acts like dry gel.
You do not want to shoot at it if water has gotten in and frozen. Other than that, its the safest and best pellet trap I’ve ever used!

Heres a link again, and I show what it is and how I make it about at 1:00 in the vid. Or you can just “google” edgun tips I’m 1avid air. Let me know if you like it if you do any rattin or need a portable stop. Cheers

Ginuine1969 - Somethings up with your mulch. I've tested my shot box with 22lr, 5.56, and 9mm handgun. The 9mm went the furthest and was still a few inches from the back. I'm approximately 12" deep with my setup.
Check this out - http://airgunnation.dev/topic/rubber-mulch-shot-box-plans/?view=all It's my shot box plans and there's a pic showing the rubber mulch I'm using. You might try "settling" your mulch by shaking the bucket back and forth. I'm getting the same results as TDK.
