I'll start off by saying that I rarely ever read YouTube comments, I usually just watch the videos. So I was really surprised when I watched Ted's latest video where he spoke about people trashing him in the comments so I did a little research and WOW was I surprised what I saw when I scrolled down and started reading.

First off, here's the video that started everything:

If you watch that video you'll hear Ted talk about his problems with the bolt of the gun and how inconsistent it shoots. He also talks about the QA issues from the factory. It's obvious that he's gotten a lemon and was past his return period once the issues surfaced. His comments about the gun didn't seem controversial to me and he wasn't calling out any specific YouTube personalities but if you read the comments you'd think he'd killed some of these people's dogs or something. He even says in the video that he's going to contact Pyramyd and try to get it fixed.

So…I do some more digging and I come across this video from someone called "southern gunner" whom I've never watched before:

And this is where things get interesting. He seems personally insulted that Ted got a bad Gauntlet. I don't remember Ted attacking him or anyone else he mentions in his video but he sure thinks he did. Southern Gunner says it's not an attack video but if you go through the comments you'll see him agreeing and encouraging some of the nasty comments directed at Ted for daring to be unhappy with his Gauntlet! Even Umarex USA commented that this video made their morning!

So, that brings us to yesterday's video (which I just saw today):

    Again…more nasty comments.

I guess my whole point is that I'm shocked that people are reacting this way to a video a never thought was that big a deal to begin with. I expected better from the airgun community but this whole thing is so silly to see people being so offended by negative comments about a gun they own. You'd think Ted personally attacked them or something. Ok, rant over…

For every Ted hater there are 10,000 people who love Ted and his honest reviews. I for one learned a lot from Ted and find his videos very entertaining, so i say Thank You Ted.

Is there a pool on this post?

In answer to your question: in general, quite a lot.

But relating to these videos ( which may be unfortunate but seem common place)  I'd have to agree Ted just didnt want to do a review on this rig originally.  I feel it's obvious to everyone he received a totally defective unit ( tho it would be possible to damage one) .  NO totally defective airgun will preform and no normal consumer would accept such an airgun so why "review"?

There have been cases with every know airgun where one was defective, it happens and regardless of make & model a defective from the box airgun is likely not  representative of the majority of unit.  You need a rifle that at least  basically works in order to pass judgement on the model as a whole.

     Now about transference…….          .

Red Ryder or Beaumont as long as there working they good clean fun.

Yeah. Some people could choose to have a civil talk but no…My former boss used to say:"Do whatever makes you feel good"….I suppose that is their approach

You might be right. Though, I got the impression from his initial video 9 months ago where he seemed (to me at least) to be interested in it because of all the buzz.

Personlly I think it was more of an issue of Ted being focused on things other than videos instead of some FX or Crosman sponsored conspiracy. I mean, let’s face it – the man seems to have a lot going on and videos don’t seem to be his priority anymore.

I will say the thing that surprised me most was Umarex USA jumping on the bandwagon in the comments attacking Ted. I would have expected more from a PR department.

A smarter move would have been to reach out and offer to fix his issue or send him a new rifle to test. I’d rather have a big industry celebrity on my side instead of making him an enemy.

I wonder how many people in the comments that act like reviewers owe it to them to crank out reviews on random guns have ever even tried to make and edit a video? I tried to make one for the “Long Rangers Challenge” that Airgun Depot put on awhile back, and man was that time consuming. I was just trying to edit out all the misses and get good footage for the challenge and it took all night. When Steve or Ted or Giles put out a 10 min video there are HOURS of editing that go into it. Now that YouTube has taken away the monetization for those kind of videos, why put in the time and effort? They are getting compensation from the companies but creating quality content that generates revenue from viewership just doesn’t seem worth it to me. People just need to calm down and censor themselves before they hit submit on the comments. Such is the world we now live in I guess. Keep up the good work guys!

Regarding Ted’s video and his approach etc, I’m not informed enough to formulate an educated opinion. Preliminary speaking I would say I’m on the fence.

Regarding the negative comments: Ohhh boy… Trolls R Us! I personally do read a lot of comments. Matter of fact, depending on the subject, I may pause the video and start reading before I finish watching.

I actually replied to one Troll. He/She said that  replied to a comment and questioned why hee should try an Air Arms when he had a bunch of FXs. Well, my comment was taken out of context and trolled further down the line.

I was also tempted to reply to some of these but I use my real name on YouTube and don’t feel like dealing with any of these people in the real world or have them ship a pizza to my house or something lol

It seems the ability to have a civil discourse is disappearing in our country. I think Bruce54 is right. YouTube allows anonymous commenters to post things they would never say to your face, without fear of repercussion. Thanks to moderators like Michael, this forum maintains an expectation of courtesy and respect. We can agree to disagree without resorting to name-calling. Ted has had the great fortune of owning and shooting some very fine airguns, and I suspect that has generated some jealousy. Should Ted have made a blanket statement about the Gauntlet's inability to shoot very good groups consistently? Maybe not. But, he is clearly frustrated with the issues he's experienced. I would be. too. When that first video aired last winter, Umarex could have made a winning move by contacting him proactively and offering another sample to review. Lemons happen. It's obvious that some airgunners are very happy with their Gauntlets, and good for them. But that doesn't change the reality of Ted's experience with his. But, Ted's a big boy, and he will have to face the backlash that sometimes comes with being a YouTube star. One final observation: Ted said some of the Guantlet videos are legit, and some are total horsecrap.  He didn't identify anybody specific for either group. Like Grandpa used to say, "A hit dog will holler."

Iceman, you nailed it brother. When I buy an airgun that doesn't suit me, I just sell it, take my loss and move on. Not gonna bad mouth it in public,or private if I can help it. Enjoy reading your posts!

I ran onto some other videos by Shoot to Kill on YouTube where Umerex basically insulted Ted and backed the folks reading him the riot act.  Not too bright for the Umerex Media Team to be that stupid, but they were.

Perhaps of Umerex offered Ted a formal apology, that might help, oh, and can the Social Media team watching YouTube.  Unprofessional to say the least.  The gun was "Supplied" by Pyramyd Air.  I'm sure Ted's been in touch and from the sounds of it is trying to fix the gun, meaning spending time fixing what can't be fixed.

Just so ya all know, here's a list of guns off of my personal shopping list, all manufactured by Umerex:

    https://www.umarexusa.com/

Beretta, browning, Hammerli, Heckler & Koch, Ruger, RWS, Umerex, Walther, Colt, Glock, Smith & Wesson and Walther.  All made under license by Umerex.

Bad support is one thing, but bad support and insults, they can take a hike.

Not a Ted fan but after watching Southern Airgunner and Shoot To Kill videos I lost all respect for those yahoos.

Shoot to Kill is like mainstream media.  Pick and choose the parts you want and exploit them out of context.  Got a little butt hurt buddy?  If he had the same problems as Ted, he'd be eating his words or maybe that stupid fish in the first half of his video rant.

Southern Airgunner disgusts me.  What a hypocrite.  I'm not attacking anyone yadayadayada.  His comments and replies to others comments tells the whole story.

    This one?

The comments aren’t as bad but the premise of the video is the same. He’s taking something so personally that wasn’t even directed at him.

I appreciate comments from Hajimoto who has proven what the gauntlet can do. He’s not out making hit videos, he just comments that Ted obviously got a bad one and he hopes Ted can get it sorted and eventually review it.

There’s no need to get so personally invested. The existence of the gauntlet doesn’t make my Crown any worse. They’re both rifles that put pellets down range. I paid extra for fit, finish, and out of the box tuning. Others would rather pay less and do it themselves. To each their own I say!

Yeah, that's the one I saw.  Umerex Social Media group was incredibly unprofessional, and showed the companies true colors.  I've also unknowingly had some Umerex guns under the Ruger name in the past.  Uniform poor quality and shootablity.  Considering Umerex's dedication to quality, I'll personally go elsewhere.  If someone else wants a Gauntlet, that's great, I respect their personal decision.  Me personally, will go with companies that I've had good experience with and have had good quality experiences with.

I really did consider buying a Gauntlet, it's a great design, but it's kinda like my wife's old Chevy Citation, great design, powerful, roomy, but execution of the design was horrible.  Spent more time in the shop and on the phone with the Chevy Warranty people than on the road.  A great design doesn't help when the quality is poor or inconsistent.

On the other hand, the experience does show how the chain of gun reviews works at PA.  Ted stated in the note below the first video that the gun was supplied by PA, not purchased by him.  Meaning that at least in this case, the gun came off the shelf, and was NOT cherry picked for the review (hey, it's a lemon, no way it was cherry picked).  Gives a bit of confidence in the reviewers getting guns that  you and I might get.

All vendors have quality problems, it's the nature of manufacturing.  So, it's not the problem that's as important as how they handle the problem.  As a reviewer, Ted reviews the gun he gets, and getting a lemon means he reviews a lemon.  I like the fact he didn't send it back immediately, because I might do the same and try to work through the problem.  Shipping to someone buying a $300 gun gets expensive.  Might cost $30, $40 or more to send back.  Costs borne by the consumer, not by the vendor.

Umerex may be off my list but, if someone else wants to take the chance, that's up to them.

That’s a good point that the rifle wasn’t a cherry picked review model. That’s one thing I like about consumer reports is they buy products off the shelf to better represent the consumer experience. I wish all reviews were based on stock products.

It is hard not to appreciate the passion many have for airguns. Actually, it is impossible; therefore I do appreciate it. That appreciation extends to the passion our employees have for our industry and to the numerous people who appreciate the performance they've achieved with their Gauntlet. It is hard though, to see that a representative of our company has taken actions that have been perceived as championing those who may have been condescending to others. On behalf of Umarex USA I do apologize to Ted and our airgun community for the "cheer leading" that took place via the comments on 3rd party YouTube videos. Please know that we as a company, and I as an individual, do not condone negativity toward any member of society. The circumstances and actions that have led to this post are being addressed. I have also emailed Ted directly.
    Sincerely, JB
