What is acceptable accuracy at 30 yards? Am I expecting too much?

Hello,

I have a .177 Daystate Wolverine 2. (non-regulated) I have tried JSB 10.34, 8.44, FX 10.3, H&N FTT, H&N Baracuda Match. About the best group I can get is between 3/8 and 1/2" rested at 30 yards. Does this seem reasonable or should the groups be tighter? I feel like at 30 yards, there should be one hole a bit larger than the pellet itself, but that is just not happening. There is nothing I have found for tuning on this rifle, and it shoots the 10.3 grain JSB's at 910 fps. I would like to try a harmonic tune, but I don't see any way to adjust the hammer spring.

I have cleaned the bore and have polished the bore with JB bore paste. My scope is a Vortex Diamondback Tactical, and I set it to 16x for field target. It seems like a decent scope, and the reticle is sharp, so I don't think the scope is at fault.

Any ideas on what I could try to improve this, or is this as good as it gets? I'd like to use this rifle for field target competition, but this seems as a disadvantage to me.

Thanks!

Mike

These questions pop up all the time but are very hard to answer. The reason is because we don’t know the ability of the shooter and his ability to tune the gun. A perfectly tuned gun will still shoot bad if the shooter is not good. It can also be the opposite. It doesn’t matter how well you execute a shot if the pellet is going sometimes only 10fps too fast, your groups won’t be good. You say your gun is unregulated. Are you doing all your testing on the part of the curve that’s the tightest?

Vetmx,

I'm shooting on the fattest portion of the curve. The spread is 15 fps.

I'm generally uncomfortable talking about my shooting skill, but I'm a design engineer for a major gun company, and in testing out product, I can easily hold .75" groups with a 6.5 Creedmoor at 100 yards. I don't think I'm the weakest link in this case.

Thanks!

Mike

I’m assuming you meant .75 at 100 with the 6.5. I would then suggest just to slow the gun down just a little. My .177’s have a speed threshold. If I go over 900fps with either of them, my groups open up. Not saying every .177 on the planet is like this. I just know mine are. If I switch from 10.3’s at 890 to 8.4’s, I have to back them down way under 900fps to get exceptional accuracy.

Vetmx,

I would do that, but the only way I can see is to cut the spring. The Wolverine doesn't appear to have a means to adjust the hammer spring tension. I was hoping a person experienced with Daystates would show me where I missed that feature.

Hawkeye, I did change from magazine feeding to a single shot tray, and that helped some. Before I did that my groups were larger than 1/2".

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. We seem to think alike.

Well I got back out after work and shot some more. I noticed that the gun moved quite a lot during recoil. I usually shoot springers, so I tend to hold the gun lightly. Well, once I gripped the gun really firm, the groups shrank right up! I've never heard of a hold sensitive PCP, but it likes to be held tight. The average group is now about 1/4" with some as small as 3/16"

Thanks for all your input!

Mike

Just remember how much longer it takes the projectile to leave an airgun after you squeeze the trigger. If your Creedmore is hold sensitive and trust me it is, just imagine something that has a firing cycle 10 times slower. Like I said in my first comment, hate to question the shooter so it’s not an easy question to answer without upsetting someone.

In theory as long as the hold is consistent then the group should be consistent, maybe check for anything loose like stock bolt or moderator/shroud or even barrel?
