What great friends I have!!

So, I worked 32 years as a union sheet metal worker, now retired. In 18 of those years, I had what I call the greatest job, and that was an apprenticeship instructor. One of my students I taught for 5 years graduated and went on to become the shop foreman for a company I worked for for 14 years, and the other day I called on him to make a picture frame pellet trap protector out of 1/4” plate. I use a 10” x 10” electrical box stuffed with duct seal in the back. It is a great trap, made out of 16 ga steel, and all parts to make this is easily found at the local Home Depot. I’ve actually made some for friends that got into the Airgun sport.

but, with recent strays and inaccuracy coming from my Hercules Bully in 30 cal when I first got it really beat up the face of the trap. Yeah, I could easily just get another electrical box, but the next one I wanted to come up with a way to protect it and increase its life span-

So here’s a pic of my mangled trap, and a pic of how I’m going to prevent this-

A picture frame facing, made of 1/4” plate, and designed to attach to the new trap with powerful magnets. Another plus is the plate will go over the target, sandwiching it between the plate and the trap.

So my buddy says no problem, and I also asked him for a scrap piece of plate that would fit inside the trap at the back, before I lay in the duct seal. This will prevent a hole from bashing out from the constant pounding of Airgun ammo.

My buddy texts me this morning and says my plate is all done. I ask for a pic, and this is what he sends me-

how cool is that??!! A forever trap. Yes, it’ll be heavy, for sure, but heavy to me means “bullet proof” pun intended.

As a student my friend has always been a go getter. I knew one day he’d go far, and he sure did by running the biggest shop in the area.

Just thiught I’d share the happiness, lol

Awesome... and I really like the magnet idea. I'm a welder/fabricator among other things and will be building something like this soon. I'd like to have plate in the back on a steep angle and sound deadening to cut out most of the noise.

If I knew he was going to outright build me a trap, I would’ve had him tack a plate in the back at an angle. But, he’s not an airgunner, so he doesn’t know. I’m just happy he took it upon himself to build one, with no dimensions from me. All I have him were the dimensions on the face plate, and he must’ve went off of the pic of my beat up trap cause I, too, sent that to him.

I offered to pay for the items he made me. He also had to make me a 30” x 22” duct sleeve for an access door I’m installing in my well house I just built. He never responds to me when I tell him I want to pay him.

I know he likes working on cars, and currently he’s refurbishing a hot rod mustang from the sixties. I’m just gonna get him a gift card from summit racing.

I know these pics are not Airgun or pcp related, but I just wanted to elaborate on what a great kid this guy is. Last October of 2016, I took advantage of my pond being drained, and rebuilt the bridge that had been cheaply made by the previous owner. I tore out all that crusty, rotted Doug fir and 4x4 wood posts and decided thick galvanized posts to support a bridge 53’ long by 6’ wide. I then designed these brackets that could be welded to the steel posts to be able to hang 4x12 pressure treated beams. My wife had always wanted a dock, so I built that too, and had brackets made up for those. All these brackets my buddy fabricated and welded per my design out of 1/4” plate. Also shown are some of the brackets and how they are attached to the posts.

then, over the summer my son and I built and finished up both the bridge and dock, and now I needed permanent caps to slip inside the tops of the bridge posts, so I can install solar lamps on them.

So, a total of 10 custom brackets made out of 1/4” plate, and 12 custom post caps out of 3/16”plate. You’ll never guess what he asked for payment-

He asked that when my pond was restocked back with fish, that I invite him and his 10 year old son to come fishing. That’s it. I paid him regardless, and as soon as I get enough catfish and bass in there he’s on my list for first dibs on fishing.

During his apprenticeship, he was way above stellar, and only got A’s. Very sharp with the math, too.

anyway, just bragging on my buddy Jason. He’s definately one of a kind.

I remember he always would wait after class, or find time to catch me in private, to discuss his fears. He apprenticed for an architectural sheet metal shop all five years, but the majority of our lessons were of commercial and industrial HVAC. When the subject matter was air and its properties, or heat load calculations, he would be so lost. So his biggest fear was graduating, and not knowing anything but metal roofs and flashings. I took the time to sit with him and tell him that he needed to sit next to the sharpest guys in class, all five years, and not talk about Monday night football during their lunch breaks, but instead, go over any subject matter with them that he did not understand. In the end of all our talks, I’d finish it with “you’re going to be fine. Just the way you think and understand, you’re already ahead of the majority of members in our local”

yes, he runs the shop. The company is called ACCO, and just to let you know the magnitude of the work that company does, the Staples Center Arena for the LA Lakers, Golden1 arena for the Sacramento Kings, Levi Stadium for the SF 49ers, just to name a few. He’s making his way fine.

Bigragu Looks like you made a find journeyman out of that young man. Having welded for 34yrs till I retired . I have to say that making a SQUARE box & welding it up out of pieces is not that easy of a task. I can tell he takes pride in his work as many do not these days. You did a great job in teaching & I know your proud of him . Enjoy & get him into shooting too ! Darell

I just picked up,that pellet tap box today. He texted me telling me he wasn’t gonna be home, and that my parts were in the bed of his company truck .

i saw the pellet trap box and grabbed it with one hand....Holy Camole!!! I could barely lift that sucker out over the tail gate! His 10year old was home, and I almost asked him to give me a hand, lol. I was thinking maybe, just maybe, he made it out of 3/16 steel, cause I really couldn’t tell for sure in the pic, but no, it’s all of 1/4” plate. I hate to see what that thing will weigh in with duct seal in it, lol!

Im gonna take the advice given earlier, and prime it, then paint. It’s definately going to put the hurt on those 30 cal 44.75 grainers. No pellets denting on this baby. I called him and thanked him. Met his wife, and she agreed a gift card from Summit would make him very happy.

Got the pellet trap box today all primered, ran to the Home Depot and picked up some legs for it, a handle, and 8 bars of 1” thick duct seal. Probably going to paint this thing a tan color.

im still up in the air if I want to make this a portable unit vs a permanently mounted unit on top of a post or something. If I go permanent, I will drill some 1/2” drain holes in the bottom for when rain gets in.
