What backyard kitties look like in Idaho

Hey everyone: 

Last night at my sister’s house we had a Thanksgiving #2 dinner. My nephew came over and showed me a game trail camera video his dad took of 3 cougars walking through his backyard. This is one constant stream of video taken in real time of THREE cougars, I am guessing a mom and 2 cubs.

The trail is right behind my ex-brother-in-law’s house, and boarders his property. AND this trail is within the city limits used by afternoon hikers / runners. I added a little to make it amusing.

HI, I have spent all of my life in Alaska, Kodiak, Anchorage, Prince William Sound. Now live in SE Oklahoma. I'm much more concerned about Moose, Black Bears & Brown Bears and Humans than I would be cats. You can have problems with any wild life but cats by nature are reclusive and will stay so unless sick, wounded or cornered. Don't corner any wild animal or human, but I normally don't worry about wild animals, just politicians.

Thanks everyone. Also one comment. The cats have moved into the human areas. If you know the city there is countless acres of public land surrounding the city, thus no more building for much of the benches can occur. My friend said the cougars have followed the deer who have moved into the city’s bench areas for a streaky supply of food and shelter

@gball if you have “house cats” like that well, the neighbor’s Rottweiler would look like a chihuahua. You definitely would not have to have a alarm system installed with 400 lbs of kitty patrolling your property.

I saw one face a trained PB dog over 30 years ago and the cat didn't stand a chance. I don't condone that sort of thing but it happened.

I've never seen those cats at 400lbs. In my area 200lbs would be a really big one.

@heavy-impact a large cougar Tom could average 175 lbs and the largest ever was 276 lbs. I would say the PB was an exception to the rule. One hound against a 150-200 lbs cougar wouldn't stand a chance, a human would be a toy. My guess those cougars in the video were a family unit, the mama was probably 150ish and the others 100-125 each.

My own personal opinion is hunting cougars with hounds is the weak way to do it, be a man and call one in... mono o mono, ps with a spotter like I did for a buddy of mine years back when he tried to fill his tag with a hand call. We did this up in Central Idaho, in a location that if you were attacked and "survived" then chances are you wouldn't be able to reach help in time if you were injured badly enough, cell phone or not. I had my single shot TC encore 223 and a Glock 19 9mm for back up.

The cat wasn't hunted it had been cage trapped. Some ah brought it to rooster contest and another ah was there with the dog. I don't condone that stuff but like I said it was well over 30 years ago. The dog had it's throat instantly and it was over. I had no idea that crap was gonna be there and I have never been back. I would never hunt any cat unless there was no other option. I don't like trophy hunts, cat eaters or animal fighters. I probably shouldn't have mentioned any of it.
