What are your best pellets and slugs for .25 Safari for 100 yard Bench Rest?

Would like some input from some Safari or RW .25 HP owners please....

Got a new .25 Safari from AoA with Poly ART barrel. From the factory, they(AoA) test shot the gun at low, medium and high with JSB 33g pellets at 98 yards and said the gun shot very well. Did not get the test strip, so not sure what constitutes, "Very well." Out of box the three power levels are Low: 44 FPE, Medium @ 55 FPE and High @ 66 FPE.

I went once last week at my local outdoor range and shot at 98 yards and it was a so-so outing. Suffice it to say I was not expecting great things just yet, as it was my first real outing with the Safari. Essentially, had one solid NUAH target and 5 others were ok, not great. Also shot several 5-shot groups and they were just OK as well. Average CTC was between 1.5 and 2.5 inches approximately. The NUAH score cards were all around 48/50, but the CTC was again the same. Not bad, just not what I was expecting and I know I have to put a lot more pellets down range and break it in also. Gun was allegedly cleaned and polished by AoA before I got it, so I did not clean before the first outing. NOTE: I normally will clean a new gun before shooting, but since I asked and AoA confirmed Don cleaned it, I wanted to try it out. I have subsequently run some patches through after the first outing and it is clean now and ready to go for next outing.

Q. For those of you that have the Safari in .25 with ART barrel, can you share your experiences with what pellets and/or slugs you have shot at 100 yard BR; and what velocities you shot those targets at? I know I have to experiment with slugs and pellets, but I'm curious as to what others are finding as optimum based on their experience with the .25 caliber.

Thanks, Tom

Hi Tommy, you didn't say at what power level you shot the 34 grain JSB Heavies? Do you have the Mk1 and Mk2 to try at Medium and High Power? I think if you were shooting them on High you probably were shooting them too fast, but let us know. Somewhere around 880 to 920 FPS seems about right for those pellets. Some barrels like the Mk1 and some like the Mk2. I think the High setting might be best for slugs...

Thanks Mike for the quick response.

FX Radar had around 3 shot strings pegged at 947 FPS average for the JSB 33g MK ll on high power. ES spreads were in 10-15 range, but groups were just ok. To your point, I think that (947 FPS) may be a bit fast, so I should try them on medium power next time.

I don’t have any MK l pellets yet, but I also got 2 tins of the JSB 25’s to try next time.

re. Slugs - have you shot any in your Safari or RW with any success?

Don't forget to try the Baracudas. In mine , the Kings seem to be best at 900ish but the Mk2s and Baracudas are better in the wind. All 3 are quite respectable. I've shot a few slugs and some were very good but generally just shoot pellets so don't keep track of the slugs.

Definitely try them at lower speed.

Also, been trying the Carnauba wax recently to lessen the leading and seems to be helping a lot. Mine likes it best with seasoned bore but no lead. With the wax, seems to be settled by 5 shots now. Slugs will DEFINITELY lead up the bore quickly unless lubed.

Hey Gang

Spent a couple of hours at my outdoor range today. I have pics and a story and will post tomorrow or Monday.

In the meantime, have a very pleasant Easter with your families!

I know many are hurting so my thoughts and prayers are SINCERELY with all of you !

Time is the most precious commodity, and when I was in my mid Twenties I had no concept. Funny, now at 66, I see things differently.

Till tomorrow ......

Last pic - almost a magic group, except for that 5th pellet at 98Y. I 'think' this is the one where I dialed down to low power and shot the 25 JSB. Was shooting a group, not for score but POA was the center ring.

NET: Shot at medium power yesterday at around 865-870 average FPS. Nothing great here but I did have an interesting group right before I packed up with the 25g on low power at 900 FPS. It was pretty tight at 98 yards, and around an inch CTC but I was in a hurry to get home. Will give it a good test next time out.

I still have not received any input on slugs/weights/velocities for RW Safari in .25 caliber, so if you are out there and you have had some success with slugs in .25 caliber please let me know your thoughts and / or experiences.

Just got back from range today, and it was beautiful. Not crowded and that's just the way I like it when I can get it.

RBAZ - I did shoot the JSB 25g today on low power and the average veloicty is right around 900 FPS according to FX Radar Chrono. You're right, they do shoot well at 100 yards! For me so far, the 25 g JSB on low power at 900 FPS did well. I can't say the same for the 34g MK2's shooting at 947 FPS, but I have no way of dialing down the power on High. I know some of you like 880 - 920 FPS for the 34g, but I'm not sure what I can do as it has been consistently shooting them at 945-950 FPS on high power. These are preset by Daystate and I'm not buying the programmer after parting with over $3K for just the rifle, just yet. Maybe eventually, but not yet.

In any case, here are some pics: One of the targets is a DQ, and I am getting one or two of those per outing!

Arzover - Can you give me the full description of the Barracudas in terms of brand and weight? Not familiar with them

Spray1mark - Can you do the same for the JSB KD in 25 cal? Not familiar with KD or is that the JSB 25 grain that I am already using?

Saved the best for last. Finally, my 'one and only ever' sub MOA group with an air rifle

Damn that 5th pellet. I almost pissed in my pants for joy because nobody was there to watch me and I was like a crazy man. To say I was happy was an understatement, but as we all know, this does not happen often. To be more precise, I bet I shot around over100 NUAH targets at 98 yards and never even came close. However, I'm not yet ready to "step into the arena," as my wife says I am spending enough time ( and $$$) at this hobby all ready.

H & N Baracuda, 30.86 grain according to their web site. They also have a Trophy and a Baracuda Green that are about 20 gn. Another potential is the Benjamin Domes are a good design and shoot well in some rifles. Qc is a bit iffy as I've had big fliers out of awesome groups and found some not round pellets on close inspection . If you were to sort I think they could be VERY good. They're 27 grain.

Hth.
