What are the openings in the targets used in FT.

Hi I'm new to FT and I'm in the process of getting my old RWS model 45 .177 springer and a scope dialed in from 10 to 55 yards . What I'm having a hard time finding is the size of the openings that are used at the different distances . For example how far back can the smallest opening target be from the shooter .I found this on Wiki , the US, kill zone diameters vary from a minimum of 0.375 inches (9.525 mm), to a typical kill zone diameter at distance of 1-1/2 inches (3.81 cm). Occasionally, kill zones to the maximum allowed 2 inches (5.08 cm) are used.. But it doesn't say how far back the minimum 9.525mm opening can be set from the shooter .Is there a maximum distance for smaller opening ? Do the size openings have anything to do with the shooting positions ? How does this work for the US FT matches .

This is a general overview of what the maximum distances are for each kill zone size used:
3/8" out to 15yd
1/2" out to 25yd
3/4 out to 35yd
1" out to 45yd
1 1/2"-2" out to 55yd

Odd sizes like 5/8" and 1 1/4" ect are not often seen at matches unless you have a sadistic match director. Also note there is a system in place called the Troyer Rating that determines how far each sized kill zone can be placed and still considered legal for a AAFTA sanctioned match. I do not remember the equation. There is a link on the AAFTA website but it seems to be down right now.

On a side note my practice lane has kill zones at ranges further than would be approved in a sanctioned match. 3/8" at 18yd, 1/2" at 30yd, 3/4" at 40yd and so on. I beleive in the mantra aim small miss small.

Do get to a match! You'll learn more in one day than reading for a year.

Do read everything on Brad Troyer's site airguns.net and all rules and such are on the AAFTA page, perhaps start reading on this page:

AAFTA And do check out making your own targets, setting a course and all the other cool links.

The rules do now list distance/size and the "troyer scales"( Bard Troyer) is used to determine/compaier course difficulty

KZ size has nothing to do with position ( unless it suits you to change position , all shoots may be taken standing in all classes if you like) . There are normally two "forced position" lane at a match, say standing & kneeling, otherwise your class - Hunter, other- determine your position. Hunter allows a seat and a bi-pod ( if you like, again freestyle is fine if it's good for you ) WFTF does not allow straps/harness . Read the rules you'll get it, not nearly as fast as shooting at a match though.
