I teach a number of students who come over from China to attend a Christian college - the gov't has been shutting down many of the VPNs that people had previously used. It's a whack-a-mole game, but in this case the moles are losing to the hammer. There's been a major push to control access - when students go back for a visit over the summer, they have no Skype, no Youtube, no gmail, no to most of the websites that we take for granted as being accessible. Glad this person can get onto the forum to talk to us - but I wonder how long it will last.

China makes new law and imposes it the next day. They will have groups of enforcers on the street to confiscate anything illegal. One day gas scooters were legal and many people owned them. China banned gas scooters and confiscated them the next day to be recycled. The people had to purchase electric scooters. A man was sentenced to 10 years for importing a few airsoft guns. A person can be arrested, sentenced and executed in just a few days for crimes that are only misdemeanor in other countries. All foreigners are tracked. As a foreigner you can't just stay in any hotel. You may only stay in hotels that accept foreigners and each hotel must register you with the local government as a foreigner. China is very different than western countries.
