Weihrauch Modell 97 Kurze Luftgewehr......precision accuracy.

I'm no German. Just being a little crafty with the title. Please allow me some humor here. But...I wasn't pulling any legs with the title either. After taking care of some things that needed talking care of today, I had a bit of time to get some shooting in this afternoon with my HW97K. I just washed and lubed a new tin of pellets early this morning and wanted to see how they performed. I did the majority of my shooting today between 30 and 40 yards. I only have steel reactive targets set up past the 30 yard point at the moment.

The accuracy that can be achieved with this 97K is unsurpassed. Really. I've no doubt that some can equal it.....but out perform? I don't really see how. This is a full power springer mind you.....no PCP. The below pictures are no fluke. These are very repeatable groups that are achieved with this rifle. I've begun shooting empty 9mm shell casings off of a wood post at 30-35 yards and plastic bottled water caps at 40 yards consistently.

I get excited about this sort of thing and don't have anyone near me that I know that gives a rip about air guns. So.....I have to tell you fellas about it. I guess that's what this place is for.......isn't it?

Thanks for takin a look.....

Rooster..that is flat out amazing! From the looks of your scope setting you appear to be set between 9 and 10X. AMAZING !! NO !! Better than amazing!!

Thanks Wayne. I'm a bit surprised with it myself sometimes. The rifle just flat shoots. I have learned that if it is not shooting with this type of consistent accuracy, it's NOT the rifle. It's either me or it doesn't like the pellets I'm feeding it. And yes I do keep my scope set at 10x magnification most of the time. Unless, I am shooting at a small target at longer range. Then I will turn it to 12x or so......thats about it.

Satisfyin' ain't it! Them springers are supposed to be hard to shoot well. You make it look easy Rooster.

Thanks Tony........YES it is satisfying!! A "full power" springer can sometimes be a handful when trying to get good consistent accuracy. They can be very frustrating at times. I know this first hand. But don't be afraid and shy away from them thinking that you just can't shoot them accurately. You can! You just have to take the time and effort to learn them. This 97 has been massaged a little bit which makes it a bit smoother to shoot. But, the rifle is just plain accurate. And very easy to shoot so.

Why lubricate pellets in a spring gun?

i always thought that was a no-no

Oh yes...you can lube pellets used in a springer. You would lube pellets used in a springer for the same reasons that you would lube them for a pcp. Only difference is that when lubing pellets for use in a springer, you should pay attention to the amount of petroleum product that is in the lube and how much you lube the pellets with a petroleum based lube.

What's the firing behavior with this rifle? It must be fairly pleasant at 14.5 FPE ?

Higher magnification really helps with accuracy precision. I guess 10X works pretty well at 30 yes?

FYI....I did some chronograph testing with the 5.54mm head FTT pellets you sent me for testing in my Sig. They fit very snug. Noticeably tighter than the 5.53mm FTT. I fired 5 shots for an average of 840 fps. Right at factory specification of 23 FPE. I actually weighed them at 14.7 gr. I may do some accuracy testing either Tuesday or Wednesday.

I've been using silicone based spring oil on my pellets. I kept one of the foam rounds from a tin of pellets and apply 2-3 drops on the foam. Then press my finger on the foam disperse the oil into the foam. Then roll the pellets until coated with a very light film of oil. It does add a little velocity I might add. About 10-15 fps in my testing. As far as improving accuracy I haven't done any tests to prove/disprove it.
