weekend hunt

the 24th of July is a state holiday in Utah and a lot of people in south east Idaho celebrate it to. it just so happened my uncle was in charge of some celebrations and Saturday night would be shorthanded at the rodeo. so i went up to help him out flipping burgers for 6 hours. i left after work Thursday and drove the 3 hours so i could also celebrate my cousins 22nd birthday and so we could go coyote hunting Friday morning. recently i read Jim Chapman's blog about his air gun predator slam (coyote, bobcat, raccoon and, fox) not knowing the legality for airguns in Idaho several months ago i contacted a family friend of mine (who is on the wildlife bored) about what was legal because there's a lack of air gun regs in Idaho and Utah he told me that they were not specifically excluded in the small game world aside from sage and sharp tail grouse pheasant quail and partridge so he says it is technically legal (big game are more clear it has to be a center fire archery or muzlloader ) Friday we weren't successful on coyotes but managed to take my first air rifle rock chuck at 87 yards and that evening a young jack rabbit at 47 which will be made into hasephefar (and yes i know all the wives tails about jack rabbits being bad eating but i have had them before and cooked right are really tasty not as good as cotton tail) Saturday morning we managed a few more jacks and a coyote (my first) but unfortunately conditions required a .223 best shot i have ever made. so the predator slam will have to wait.

Congratulations on that chuck, it can be a hard and fun hunt! I've done that grandslam almost every year since I first wrote about it, one year adding a ringtail cat as well. It's a great goal that most can reach if they put in the effort. With AZ now permitting mountain lion and bear with an airgun, there could be a new grandslam :)

This year I'm going to do that again, but also looking at the squirrel grandslam; fox squirrel, gray, black color phase, Aberts. That one will take me from Indiana (fox) to Minnespta (gray) to Michigan (black) to Arizona (Aberts).
