Ways to do home cerakote

Hey guys I have a few questions regarding how to do cerakote at home. First I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to build an oven big enough to do the work. I was thinking of buying a locker or steel cabinet and cutting a hole in it for a window to see a thermometer and a round hole to allow a heat gun to be attached. Honestly I don't know if that will work or not any other ideas would be welcome. Second question, could you use your home oven for smaller parts? Does it make a bad smell or ruin the oven for food use? Third, what brand of cerakote works best? Thanks guys

Some of the DuraCoat formulas do not require oven curing and are still very durable. You can even get it in a rattle can that has the paint and hardener in the same can. It’s enough to do a couple of long guns. It’s a lot more convenient than Cerakote and easy to use. There was a guy in Windsor that did a great job and was very reasonable, a couple of friends and I have been trying to get a hold of him for a while. Don’t know if he’s shut down for Covid or out of business. His shop was called Sonoma Sportkote. Have a good one.

I've been coating for years now. mostly AR and pistol stuff and some long gun and shotgun stuff. I use my home electric oven as well. smells a little when its cooking but dissipates fast. way more smell from the application of it... I heat it at 250 degrees for about 2.5 hours then turn oven off and let it cool in there. Get a cheap sandblaster from tractor supply or tool town and blast all the surfaces your looking to paint (lightly on plastics) make sure you're over is CLEAN first as a dirty over can change the color of the lighter colors. Ie. tans, whites, FDE.... soak all your metal parts in acetone for at least an hour before painting to remove any oils.Wipe down and polymer parts really good with acetone and use soap and water on plastic to clean. Wear rubber glover so you don't get oils from your hands on the parts. you have to get creative putting large parts like barrels in the oven. I hang everything off wire hangers bent into hooks to hang everything. sometimes you need to crack the oven door open a bit to get stuff to fit. I use tinfoil around the oven door to hold in heat. 250 degrees is a good safe temp if you have to do this so you don't have to worry about burning down the house..lol... hope this helps... any other questions, hit me up. good luck!
