Wanting To Hunt & Learn In NY Tristate Area

Hi All,

I’m new to this so please excuse the “Newbie Naivetee”. I would like to learn how to hunt in the NY, Nassau, Suffolk area primarily; & or, the upper NY & Tristate area if legally necessary. I would like to learn to hunt whatever is legal for my area. & learn proper skills of harvesting, for eating, taxidermy etc. While not trophy hunting, I would like to be able to provide for my family in case of shtf kind of scenario. I’m open to any and all insights & advice. What licenses do I need to procure or classes do I need to take...etc

Many Thanks...

I have access to:

Hatsan Bullmaster .25

Hatsan Gladius Long .25

Benjamin Bulldog .357

Appropriate mildot day scopes & ATN X-Sight 5x20

Hunter Safety course is needed for first license. It should be taken no matter what. I've sat through it 4x's. Once when 12, and, excuse me 3x's so far with 2 other Sons & a young Son that will take at 12.

This is a very deep topic on ethics & more than just shoot and drag home. I'd go over everything with you in PM but not going to clutter it all up here. I'm in NE PA and if you wish to travel to my land, you, a beginner trying to provide for Family are the only type I'll help. I'm not a hater, but no Trophy hunters on my land. PM me for any "newbies" questions. If I don't know, I'll tell you so, & where to find out. Welcome to the fold.

Gazmn im assuming you live on long island? Hunting on long island is very difficult especially (with an airgun). There are so many rules for LI. Forget nassau county all together. Look on nys dec website and type in long island hunting opportunities. Its a nightmare of rules, conditions, times, numbered spots, permits. I would take the hunting safety course and travel upstate a bit to "state land" to hunt. I just sold my property upstate so i can help pay for my sons college or i would have invited you up. I have been trying to hunt suffolk but im totally confused by the rules. Good luck.

Hey Crittahitta,

I saw in another topic that you shoot on LI gun ranges. Could you reccomend any? & any insight you could give on gun range etiquette & protocol? Do I have to register or show LI ID? I’ll assume bring AGs un loaded ammo in seperate bag. Any other tips would be appreciated from all. I’m a newbie. But don’t want to be a kook or boob. Thanks All.

PS. & James - we’ll be talkin more thanks bro.

Call the Gaming department in Albany and they'll walk you through the do's & don'ts for Suffolk and Nassau (Nassau is a headache...you might as well forget that county). Air guns are illegal in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island. Suffolk has a range on the farther end of the island in Calverton. Pay the $35 fee, tell 'em what you're shooting (don't be offended if they struggle to hide their smirks...these guys are cowboys!), select a bench at one of three distances (50, 100, or 200 yrds) and shoot all day if you want. Upstate NY will be your best bet for a genuine hunting experince.

yeah. don't call Albany about shooting on LI. They don't even know it is part of NY. lol Brookhaven range has a dedicated airgun range directly behind the sign in location. It is $12 dollars to shoot all day. Just walk in without your guns and tell them you want the airgun range. After paying go to your car and bring them to the range and have fun. There are a lot of reactive targets there but if you want to shoot paper you have to bring it and the stand to hook it too. Let me know when you want to go some warmer weekend and I will meet you.

Thanks Guys

Sorry I missed this earlier. I’m apparently just waking up from my Turkey dinner [Leftovers..]

I can’t believe it’s December already! I get the feeling that these are outside ranges. If so, no joy till Spring. But I’ll check out Brookhaven & Calverton. I sling a guitar on weekends Nearby in Baiting Hollow. If there’s an indoor setup; Maybe I can sling some lead before “strummin my pain..”, 😝
