Video Editing! What are you using?

Blackmagic's Davinci Resolve is an incredibly full featured editing tool, which is available to download and use FOR FREE! I've been using it for years. I don't know how they do it - maybe it just helps them to sell more of their cameras? There might be an even more powerful software tool from them for purchase, but I've never even been close to looking at what it may provide. Been totally satisfied with the free version.

I use it on a small HP workstation which was purchased for and is pretty much dedicated to video editing. I also have FinalCut Pro on my big iMac which, while I haven't used it as much (or learned it as well), does seem to be quite a bit faster when rendering. But I'm a low volume user, so I have never felt the need to have something faster than Resolve for my basic work.

I started out making videos trying to use some powerful, manipulative software. I found myself spending more time compiling the video than I did making it. Some never did get completed. Now my videos are very basic. No pizzazz. No CGI. Lucas I am not.
Not trying to make a feature length motion picture. I’m doing them for fun. Not for entertainment. Ain’t nobody paying me. I use my iPad. I use Splice. Free download.

Any if you all running into issues getting resolve to recognize GoPro videos in H.265?

I tried resolve, because it was free, but it won’t recognize my video, and I am guessing it is due to the H.265 codec, best I can tell from Google. My laptop plays the video fine in the default windows program, but not in resolve, but resolve does play the audio.

Anyone filming in GoPro in 4K and getting their free software to recognize the video?

Running on (old, weak) memory here since I don't shoot much with a GoPro. But IIRC the last time I did it was in 4k res and for a quick and dirty edit it wouldn't work on my normal desktop (older Dell). But I have an HP mini-workstation which I pretty much have dedicated to video editing and working with hi-res photos, and everything went just fine.

So even though your system was able to play the video O.K. using the Windows module, other aspects of it may not be powerful enough or compliant with what Resolve requires.

How old is the laptop? H.265 isn't all that old and many systems are still evolving to handle it.

Just a guess though.
