It does not sound like you really need any convincing. You've already told us what you are doing isn't really working. The positive you get out of shooting would appear to be the satisfaction of the kill.
I don't have the time to shoot all the pests in my yard. That's why I use traps.
My chickens hunt and kill the mice. My Goodnature traps kill the rats and squirrels. The only pest I have to deal with myself is the raccoons -- either with Haveaheart traps (mostly for the babies) or shooting, for the adults.
When I bought my property I'd see 20+ rats up in our trees in the night. Now I don't see them at night, nor in the day. There's almost no evidence of mice, anywhere. And it's a rare month where a raccoon comes across our property.
Although you don't want to hear that traps "done properly" work, it sounds like your own experience with shooting is telling you it does not work, at least not at the level that you are doing it at. Maybe it's time to give something else a try.
