Varmint Knocker (D-RIG) HOLLOW POINT 22.5 GRAIN from .22 Taipan Mutant

Was shooting a few targets with friends yesterday, had four of my guns with me, and was shooting the .22 Mutant prior to heading out to schwack some squirrels and rabbits with my .20 EDgun Lelya 1 (it was a "virgin", and needed its first kill...). My buddy Nick says "here's a pack of slugs that Craig (@crosfire) gave me to try in my Cricket mini, but they don't group for squat, more like a shotgun. Wanna try them in your Mutant?" So, I said sure, not thinking they'd be any better, since both guns have a CZ barrel. My Mutant was shooting the 18.1 JSB right at 900 FPS, but can be dialed up easily to around 935 to 940 just by the HST adjust.

I loaded up a few mags, and shot a few sighters at the 50 yard target we had set up. Then I shot two competition grade groups of five shots each. The drop on the 22.5 grain slugs was about 1.5 mil lower than the JSB 18.1s, and I don't know the velocity since we didn't have a chrony. But, surprise, surprise, surprise!!! Two five shot groups that could be covered easily by a penny. Pretty much as good as the JSB 18s (not quite, but very close). I didn't get a chance to take them out to 75 or 100 yards, nor did I dial up the speed at all on the Mutant. It would be easy to jack up the reg. pressure about 10 bar and adjust HST so I could get a decent (880 FPS?) speed with the slugs. So now I'm curious, even though I posted last week that I wasn't a slug fan...

Will check the FPS as I shot them yesterday, then see what kind of increase I can get without going to extreme measures, and if they are stable at longer distances, plus what the BC turns out to be. Best part is that D-RIG is in San Diego like me, so very easy to get a hold of these slugs if I want more. FYI, the .20 Lelya is no longer a "virgin", since it got squirrels at 57 and 70 yards, and a rabbit at 52 yards, perfect head shot sitting off hand...

One thing that could easily go unnoticed unless a person reads the description of the slugs on the eBay ads, is the statement on the 24gr 2S slugs that they work well at high or low velocities.

That's what made me try them, despite not being able to push them "fast enough". Turns out at 908fps, the slugs are fantastic in my Crown 22.

What I've been thinking of is dialing the power back slightly, maybe 5bar which should be about 10fps, but could improve accuracy a tad.

Thanks Bob, I intend to try the 24 grain ones also. It doesn't make sense the BC difference between the two, can't think of a physics or technical reason 1.5 grain with same shape would make that much difference. So me being me, I'll have to prove it to myself. If I can get the 22.5 grain to fly over 900 FPS, then the 24 grain should only be about 30 FPS less, so still good velocity. For me, whichever one groups best at 75 to 100 yards would be the one to use. So we'll see. I do know the Mutant is easy to crank up the power, both with HST adjust, and reg pressure. Plus the transfer ports are easy to open up in the Mutant also. And that trigger... Other than my FWB 601 10M target rifle, its the best. And I have three FX, Bobcat, Crown and Streamline, the Mutant's trigger is noticeably better than any of them. Not saying they're bad, and I would never know until I bought this used Mutant to tune and sell, then liked it so much I decided to keep it... Will post about the slugs when I have more data. I really don't have time to do much more than HST and reg, so if it takes more than that it'll be a while... PS., as it gets warmer out in your region, your FPS with the Crown will go up noticeably. It wouldn't surprise me to see up to 940 FPS with no change except the outdoors temperature.

I don't know either. But I entered that value into Strelok and it gave me a firing solution at 100yds after I zeroed at 30. I dialed what it said and 3 of 5 hit the bullseye.

I then made turret tape out to 180yds and put two shots side-by-side on the silo, right on the horizontal crosshair at 150yds, exactly where Strelok said it should be.

So no adjustment of the BC (0.121) was necessary.

Sounds good to me. I wasn't questioning you, or the 24 grain BC. I was more questioning the 22.5 grain BC of .074. Same shape, 1.5 grain difference, and BC differential of about 40%? Doesn't pass the common sense test. Of course, it could be the right one, and I just don't know enough, which is probably more than likely the case. ;)

I’ve posted about these 22.5gr slugs a few times here so I don’t want to be monotonous but if it can add to the discussion - these things have been very exciting for me;!

I’m shooting them at 930fps through my 20” 1:17” Kral barrel and tho I dont have extensive or thorough data to report, I am getting .63” groups at 80yds and the POI is about 1.5” higher than RD Monsters and MUCH BETTER IN THE WIND. They also open up much more MASSIVE WOUND CHANNELS on rabbits and squirrels that I’ve taken both near and far. They retain a lot more (relative %) energy at range too.

I don’t care what they cost, I just don’t see myself buying any more pellets...

Temps came up to 25 this morning so I shot some of Dale's.22 cal slugs through my RAW at 50 yards. Both 22.5 gr and the 24 gr fed nicely through the magazine. The cold made it difficult to start with and I did not walk down through the snow to get photos of the targets. I'll do that once the weather improves.

First up was the 22.5 I was getting about 3/4" at 50 yds Not bad!

Second were the 24 gr. I was getting 1/2" at the same yardage. Quite happy!

Again, the cold weather had me pressing to get back in the warm. I did not take the time to set up the chrony either. As for now, Good News!

Best “6-shot” group w/25gr jsb’s last group of day..., was going to be 5... but one went out so for the heck of it shot another and fell right in, bad pellet?, Me? (65yds)

the RD Monsters are a pretty great pellet but are known to be accurate up until 50yds and then fall apart after that - have you experienced the same? It sounds like they shoot best around 940-960fps

Hello!

I just received my .25 caliber D-Rigg slugs, tried them in the Wildcat Gen I and they are slightly longer than the magazine....I'll have to use them in the Streamline I guess. Just might try giving D-Rigg a call and see if he can make some slightly shorter though.

Magazine mic'd at .386 while the slugs were at .402-.405, close but no cigar. They dragged just enough to rub out the tips.

D-Rigg? How about a slightly shorter .25 caliber, 33gr?

Thanks
