UX Gauntlet .25 -- Six months 3rd gun

Hello --

Back in March 2020 I bought an Umarex Gauntlet .25 cal at the local gun shop. Those guys didn't know too much about them, so was up to me do some research. Reviews seemed favorable, with much information on performance, potential mods, and seemed popular in the AG community. Why not get back into shooting sports? We gonna be spending a lot of time around the house. I made the purchase, Leupold scope, hand pump...they cut me a little bit of a deal. Just as I was pulling out my wallet, oh, that's right, need pellets. The shop had no .25 cal ammo. WTH? Top it off, the shop would not even call another gun shop up the hill see if they had any .25 cal available. I had to go outside and call. Anyway, day or two later I was in my yard shooting.

The Gauntlet shot fair out to 25 YD. I just need some practice. Used it to finish clearing out a large warren of mongoose in the brush on my fence line, the last 8 or 10 of about 25 total. It was loud though. Couple weeks in thought I might polish out the mating surfaces in the trigger group, tune for nicer pull. Cracked open the trigger and find all the moly paste mashed into the safety plunger well, all else bone dry. OK. Then find the sear post bent. UGH. Called Umarex, and their rep merely told me replacement trigger is $19.95 + $10 shipping. Soooo....placed the order. Reluctantly.

The gun still being loud, about mid-April ordered a short shroud/moderator kit. Took a while to arrive with viral pandemic kicking into full gear. Pulled the shroud, and while at it pulled the barrel for thorough cleaning. I found the barrel in the condition seen in below photos. Contacted Umarex. They were not even going to offer a shipping label. Took a second call to get a shipping label out of them. Swapped the junk trigger back on and shipped it out. Meanwhile, the shroud/mod kit arrived. I am thinking maybe the barrel is clipping pellets, thus the shotgun pattern on groups beyond 30 YDS. Photos of "striated" muzzle and dented up breech end.

Well, Gauntlet #2 arrives. I open the cartons and find pretty much everything in order. Except, for some reason, the forestock/bottle shroud was not assembled to the gun. No problem, I can handle. Oops, the gauge glass is shattered. Have to call them about that. Swapped out the trigger for the replacement I bought. Proceeded to pull the shroud for swapping in the short shroud/suppressor kit. Gauntlet owners, you know the o-ring on the air stripper? How it creates a bit of friction when pulling the shroud? Yeah, this was just enough friction to pull the barrel right out of the breech. On inspection there appeared no evidence that the two grub screws had even been turned down onto the barrel. Well, that sucks, but, hey I can handle. I was gonna clean the barrel anyway. This is where i figured out that the threading for the barrel grub screws was never dressed interior of breech, hence every barrel o-ring sliding past the grub screw holes were getting sliced and diced. I found the same thing on the Gauntlet #1. Maybe that's why gun is so loud? All the lead fouling in the mag well?

Back to that detached forestock/bottle shroud. There was evidence of damage around threaded hole on the tang through which the sling stud passes as a fastener. Hmmm. So, I was not able to re-attach that forestock. Figured then that someone tried to assemble gun, gave up, bagged the parts, put in carton and shipped. The fitment was so far off, there was no way this gun would fully assemble. OK, Gauntlet #2 is going back to Umarex. This is really messed up, to put it politely. Several emails to Umarex and no response. Finally, couple weeks later I am able to secure another shipping label and sent it back.

I corresponded with a guy who has tuned and modded hundreds of these Gauntlets. He told me that of a large shipment he may have a few guns that exhibit these flaws I have described on individual guns. Not all of these issues on a single gun. WTH?

Week or so later I get an email with Fedex tracker. Hey that was quick, maybe they going take care of me. Day or two later the tracker is invalid, Umarex having pulled the shipment. Week later the Fedex tracker shows up in my email, and I am thinking, maybe they took their time and made sure I get a good gun? Nope. They were busy taking detail photos of Gauntlet #3, and composing a nasty letter to me refuting any of my claims, with responses saying I had "gotten into the gun" and damaged on my own. They also state they will no longer warranty the gun they sent me. Yes, they sent me a gun that they will not cover under warranty. That's Gauntlet #3. Six months.

Umarex will never, EVER, get my money again. This whole story is rife with little red flags its entire length. Two lemons, and a third gun I do not even want to look at. What a waste of my time and resources.

That is rough. Unfortunately that is the gamble you take when ordering lower end rifles. The price point is low for a reason. It means they have to cut cost along the production and quality control line. I hope this last rifle is solid for the most part. When buying guns in the sub 500 range you can almost guarantee you will have to do some work on it. It’s important to make sure you buy from companies that are at least willing to stand behind their product when things go wrong. It seems like umarex is not one of those companies. Thank you for the heads up.

You would’ve probably been better off getting a Benjamin marauder. I’ve heard A lot of good reviews on that gun. I had the same issue with a Beeman PCP rifle that I bought from Pyramid air. I talk to An air gunsmith And he recommended for me to get a Benjamin fortitude generation 2 considering my price range that I was willing to pay.It is a little lower on power because it’s regulated, but I get 70 Full power shots. It has been a very good and accurate shooter. But the marauder is a little more powerful.

Right, yes, thanks for reminding me (bangs head on wall). My LGS had a stock of Umarex, Benjamins, and a few Hatsans. I liked the action of the Marauder, the cocking cycle...two fingers versus the ham-fisted Gauntlet. Yes, I should have gotten the Marauder. When I was doing a little research I found that I preferred a beech stock field target model but none were available locally. I am a patronize the local business kinda guy. When can. So, of the all the poly stocked models on the wall I opted for the Gauntlet. (Bangs head on wall).

That really sucks. Looks to me they outsourced the manufacturing to China like many of the Umarex owned Diana PCP guns. It always comes back to bite them when they do that sort of thing. Not that China is not capable of making quality stuff it's just that the QC is so poor they don't. I really hate to see such poor quality coming from a German company.

Some months/years back I went and ordered another pair of my favorite Millet scope rings. The rings I have been buying for many years cuz they were great quality and made in the USA. When I opened the package and saw what was there was furious. These rings are decently machined heavy steel and they were so bent up and twisted that they were useless. Looks like someone ran them through the hydraulic press incorrectly and just wasted them. Then I read on the package it said "Made in Mexico". I sent the rings back to them with a note stating "these used to be made in the USA that is why I have been purchasing them for decades. This is what happens when you outsource our jobs. You also loose your customer base. I will never purchase another set of rings from you." Needless to say I never received a reply and the money I spent on the rings was not recovered. This is happening way to often. GRRR...

Wow! That is some bad luck right there. Kind of like what Ted's Holdover got when he went to review one. I can see why you are done with them. It's too bad you were so unfortunate because they really shoot lights out when built right. The Avenger is probably a better choice now anyway and you get everything the Gauntlet left out: lightweight, sidelever, easily adjustable everything, all at the same price. Good luck on your future purchases, you're due some.

I was reading up on a "loading discharge issue" with the Benji Semi-Auto Marauder and learned a new phrase that may be applicable here. Wanted to include this in original post, but lacked way of describing it. "SLAM FIRE". Please correct me here if incorrect usage of terms.

Anyway, this Gauntlet .25, it will "slam fire." Very recently had the gun cocked with bolt handle tucked into aft locking slot, breech open. Unloaded. Accidentally brushed the bolt handle, it slipped out of the locked back position, bolt flew forward and I had a misfire. Scared the crap out of me.

This happened on the Gauntlet #3 out of the box new. Overall experience is that craftsmanship is shoddy, and this particular gun is unsafe. Oh yeah, and the safety is completely useless, unless weapon is safed before you cock the trigger. Nearly impossible to put the weapon back on SAFE if needed. What a piece of junk.

That really sucks. I feel bad for you. I think a lot of it has went through the same pain though. I’m stuck with a Hatsan Springer that won’t lock up tight. Barrel jiggles up and down. I didn’t even notice until my 30 day warranty was up. I had a year to send it back to Hatsan but was just so mad at the damn thing that I put it in the closet and forgot about it for a couple years. But I still can use the open sites. If you’re stuck with that gun, you could either send it to a reliable gunsmith .Or just sell it for what you can get out of it. I would take a big loss to get rid of my Hatsan.

Wow that is just super crazy. Sorry to hear you had so many issues. My brother and I got two the moment they were announced and the only issue we had was the airstripper was broken and that was an easy fix. I did work on the gun though to get them to our liking. I modded the trigger, upped the reg pressure, buffed the cooking mechanism, ported the shroud, adjusted the hammer spring and it was a sub moa gun at a 100 yards. Even added the 22 cubic inch bottle. I enjoyed the gun, but was too long and heavy for extended field use so I sold it. I hope the 3rd one is better for you.

That's a crazy experience would drive any air gunners nut. I've got a Gauntlet .25 too but luckily only the shroud was kinda bent which i dunno how or why of course (may be during shipment or from factory), the barrel is good and did a little search i found DonnyFL carry shorter version ( https://donnyfl.com/search?q=gauntlet ) so i got that and problem fixed + his moderator to make it quiet. So far i have no other major issue yet except most people said that the bolt mechanism is kinda stiff to push the pellet into chamber but i did a trick with lubing the first few pellets with Super Lube synthetic silicone oil then the rest much better feel. You might wanna check out Hajimoto, he's one of those really good, knowledgeable and lot of experiences with Gauntlet. Check out his YT channels too for some advices and how to's. Yea.., buying low end PCP feel kinda like gambling just have to test the unit out right away after arrival so can quickly fix some or any issues. My other kinda problematic PCP would the slightly expensive and used Hatsan Bully .45 and i didn't test nor check it upon arrival, the fill port cover always jammed thus lead to shaving of the fill adapter o-ring and then contacted Hatsan Co. They sent me a bag of o-rings good for a whole year i suppose. But i did a few bit of mods so i won't have to worry about it again. Sometime we just have to to do a bit of modification to suit ourself better but don't do anything that can void manufacturer warranty if you buy new until it run out. Good luck and happy plinking air gunners.
