UTG quality

Mr. Rhea

Is it possible we are getting different quality scopes that are branded UTG, sorry to put you in the cross hairs here but I have seen your videos and respect your opinion. How can so many shooters here be so far apart on their experience with UTG. Could you possible do a retest on UTG scopes and mounts or have you already tested more than one.

Thank you,

Jim

I would like to start by saying I greatly respect JoeWayneRhea's opinion and I have learned a lot from him. But, think he is being a little hard on SOME of the UTG/Leapers stuff.

I have the following scope:

I paid $123 shipped for it. It is even cheaper now. I came with rings for that price. I agree the 36 color reticle colors is over the top and of little use to me (most ANY IR). I don't even know how to use the color reticle thing. The good thing is, you don't HAVE to use it, and for $123, I feel it is a great scope. I have two brand new SWFA 3-15's on the shelf, 1 FFP, and 1 SFP. I'm in no hurry to take the UTG & rings off my .25 Warcat. I question whether we really need $2000 NF scope to shoot what, 50-60 yards on average. I own a lot of PB's and bought my first airgun (Theoben SLR 98) in 1997, so I've owned a lot. IMHO I see nothing wrong with the UTG scope for the $$.

I've owned lots of Leapers/UTG scopes over the past 10 years and consider them to be a good value for the money. I had a 3-9 Bug Buster gen 1 with the wire reticle about 7-8 years ago and the reticle was very thick and the IR was too bright, even on it's lowest setting, so I sold it. I suspect the newer ones have thinner reticles. I found the glass to be OK.

My friend and I have old school UTG 3-12 SWAT scopes (full size, side AO, non-IR) on our Mrods and love them. Pretty clear glass, fairly thin reticle, 6 mil-dots in all directions, they range very well and have been very reliable. We've greased more critters that you can shake a stick at using these scopes.

The two upper shots are my siters

That's 6 shots at 40 yards

I've had this utg 4-16 x 40 for about 4 years now.

That bottle cap is located at 60 yards. Hit it with my gauntlet .22 with the air arms 16 GN.

I'm agree about the thick reticle, one dot is about a 1/4" thick at 40 yards at 10x power on the scope (and that's what I use it most of the time) but other than that it hold zero very well.

Now, if you need something more precise I would really look into something else, but if you need a scope for pesting I wouldn't say it's crap IMHO.

I haven't used Leapers/UTG scopes, but,
I have handfuls of their scope-rings and HD Recon 360 bipods..
All of my PCPs and match-grade bench-rest "10/22s" use them.

[with the exception of rifles needing FX No Limit rings]

Several years running them all and not a single issue..
Of course, I make sure to get 'authentic' ones from 'authorized' dealers..
That way, I don't end up with counterfeit/ clones..

Rings - I've put thousands of rounds through my 10/22s,
I've swapped scopes on them countless times, and never had a single problem
with any of their hardware getting loose or stripping.. That's why I kept using them.
Same goes for the ones on the PCPs, but, they have no recoil, so meh..
I suppose a dot of blue LocTite or hot glue could be used, but, never a need..

Scope-wise, I've heard great things about them, and I've heard bad things..
I always used Nikon, skipped over the rest, and use Discovery optics now.
That said - I can't/won't comment on those guys..

🙂👍

Sam -

I've had a Leapers/UTG, 3-12x44, Mini Swat, Mil-dot on a .22 rifle for a few years with no problems at all.

I just the other day moved it to my Lelya. Should last for ever on a no kick gun.

The cross hairs are very clean and crisp, as good as any more expensive scopes that I have or have owned on my powder fired rifles. I'd bet some don't adjust them to their eyes..!? I haven't used the illuminated retical at all, so I have no experience there. The turret adjustment is very positive and the locking mechanism is a plus.

No, it's not a $1000+ plus scope, but I knew that when I bought it..! It's represented itself very well on my ol Ruger .22. Should do the same on my Lelya.

Mike

P.s. - When I pulled my Ruger out of the safe to remove the scope, I noticed that the front cover hinge had broken. I looked online to buy another, but could not find one like the original. I e-mailed Leapers and asked where to find them to purchase. The next day the e-mail I received back stated that they have a new cover on the way to me..! No charge.

I have had several and still have a few left I have never had an issue with any of them, yup post are on the thicker side but glass has always been great ,the scopes work flawlessly, and for the guy who can’t or won’t pay $300 and up for a scope that basically does same thing , utg’s get the job done and let’s ya keep some money in your pocket. My opinion
