Using Pigeon Decoys has it's Benefits

I have been using Pigeon decoys intermittently over the past few years. I've noticed they dont not really work for pigeon, because they are too smart and are not tricked by them.

But, what they are good at are attracting other species. Often starling will fly down quicker if they don't take a good look. Grackle will be easly tricked and fly down quick, but in most situations you cant shoot (unless your farm has permit). I've noticed having a few Grackle eating grain will lure more Starling and Sparrow. It will make for an action back few hours.

Pigeons are no doubt smart but they have their moments of stupidity thats for sure. About 6 years back there were 5 of them all hanging out together about 40 yards away. I shot one and the rest stood there. One even walked over to the other as if it was saying something like, "hey man, you ok." Or something. In the end I took all 5 of them. Had similar happen with a bunch of grackles in a tree in the 50 yards range from my back patio door. Shot 9 of them before the got the hint.

So one thing I've noticed is that for turkeys and deer, a decoy that is static doesn't seem to work except to attract initial attention. If there's no movement, they don't don't seem curious enough to approach.

Add a little motion and it's a totally different game.

I tried adding a large turkey feather dangling on a short piece of 1lb fly leader. To the tail area of a doe decoy and both sides of the wing area of a turkey decoy. Any hint of a breeze and the feather twitches and moves. What a difference! The decoys become magnets. :)

I'll bet if you rigged a balance spindle for the pigeons, they would spin like weather vanes..add a couple feathers and you'd probably be in business.
