umarex gauntlet .25 and slugs

tired a forum search and came up empty. Anyone tried shooting slugs through the gauntlet? I hear that it is/isn't choked. seen many videos with it shooting h&n grizzlys with poor results. NSA slugs caught my interest but not sure on which ones to get. help and guidance appreciated. BTW my Gauntlet is stock, waiting for my regulator tester to arrive so i can make sure it is getting at least factory advertised speeds.

H&N 0.25 slugs were horrible until I put Haji's baffle kit in, and now they are reasonable but not as good as the JSB kimgs. I haven't tried the H&Ns past 50 yet, but at 50 they were about an inch. Kings are 0.25-0.75 inch at 50 yds. FWIW, I put Haji's baffle, stripper, and recommended hole in the shroud all at the same time, which didn't make a noticeable difference in loudness.

I'm pretty sure the Gauntlet barrel is choked. It's designed for pellets, and all mass produced PCP pellet rifles use choked barrels. But if you want to be sure, then slug your barrel. Take a pellet and push it into the breach end of your barrel. Then take a cleaning rod and manually push it through. At first you will have resistance. Then as the pellet conforms to the shape of the barrel, you will feel the resistance ease up. If the barrel is choked, you will feel the resistance on the pellet increase in the last 1.5 to 2" of the barrel. But I'm 99% sure the barrel in question is choked.

But the gun is also limited by the regulator. It's a Ninja reg with a preset reg setting. It's set for pellets, and the plenum is too small to send slugs downrange with decent velocities and stability. Ninja makes high pressure regs that can handle 4500 psi on the bottle side and have a set regulated pressure of 2800-3000psi. Not sure if it's compatible with the existing config on the Gauntlet, but if it is, that would be an upgrade that could potentially allow for slugs. But then you have your next hurdle.... If you upgrade the reg, can the o-rings in the vale assembly handle the higher pressures? And can the hammer spring generate enough power to break the seal on the valve assembly with the higher pressure of the regulator behind it?

The .25 gauntlet does not have a chocked barrel. I believe the .22 cal might. I have slugged mine and verified but loading and pushing a .254 slug back out and lying into muzzle end only and back out and from breech to muzzle. All come out at .248 on my previous barrel. New barrel replacement I got .2485 doing the a no e. So no choke in .25 barrel.

Now found that factory reg was/is set at 1700 psi. Had a deal go bad on getting a chronograph. So once that clears up, I'll get a different one to test current speed with things factory. I have the jsar super tune in hand, but waiting for a chronograph to test for baseline first. Fill pressure is 3000 psi on factory bottle.

Working on getting .38l bottle for it. Then gonna look at getting the new flex regulator for new bottle which is adjustable externally. Plus trying to push .254 down a .2485 barrel is a no go from the jump. Got to order some .249 from nsa to try which given current barrel measurement should be the proper size to try.

Greetings,

New to the forum. I’ve tried NSA slugs in some limited light weights in a stock .25 gauntlet hoping velocities would be higher and result in improved performance. I tried 26.8, 29.0 & 29.5 weights.

All these slugs required extreme effort to cam the bolt closed in comparison to pellets. I actually lightly lubed the slugs using lee case lube as I believe it to be non petroleum based. Lubing helped at lot and got the 26.8 grn slugs to load with only limited effort above normal when loading from individual shot tray.

The accuracy of these were not good. The 29.5 gave the best group with 3 grouping at about 1” and 2 flyers out to about 3”. These were shot at 50 yards.

My base line control group is JSB 25.39 - one ragged hole with all eight touching (1.08 MOA)

Choro Data:

26.8 - avg 873 FPS - STD of 2.9

29.0 - avg 848 FPS - STD of 5.0

29.5 - avg 848 - STD of 10.7

control-group 25.39 JSB

25.39 - avg 909 - STD 1.8

Has anyone found a .25 slug that will shoot 1 to 1.5 MOA out of the Gauntlet?

Thanks for any feedback

The biggest thing with the gauntlets and chambering slugs it the fact that it isn't really designed to shoot them. the barrels don't have the proper lead-in to chamber properly. with some careful work you can get things working better. with the barrel carefully removed, look down into the chamber. you will see there is a sharp edge where the riffling starts. this edge needs to be worked, and smoothed to and angle versus being a 90* edge. The main chamber has a bore size of .254", the bore itself is around .250". so there is a .002" step that is causing the hard loads. the slugs are dragging their nose over it and damaging the slugs, causing poor accuracy.

the best way is to sand a tapper into a dowel rod and wrap sand paper around it and slowly and lightly sand the step using different grits of sand paper.
