Turkey hunting

"Calbarry"
"dirtbikerick"Ok guys, tomorrow I'm going out for turkeys, there all around my area, flying over like lancasters over Germany, so what's the consensus, head or body shots?
Turkey season in California doesn't open until March 31. As mentioned, head shots aren't the best bet. Aim for the base of the neck. All of the turkeys I've hit at the base of the neck didn't go very far, maybe a few feet. Even when hit in the head, it won't always drop them. You have no chance catching a running turkey. All of my turkeys have been taken with either an FX Royale or Taipan Mutant, both in .22. I take them to a local smokehouse. Nothing better than a smoked turkey
Ok, my bad, I thought it was open now, thanks for that, we don't see any game wardens up here but I want to stay within the law for sure, all of the parcels up here at 11 acre minimum, I have 13 and I'll tell you that that's about 12 to many when it comes to keeping the property up.

dirtbikerick Been there done that with fishing, was all alone on the beach wondering were all my buddies were, they had a good laugh. Know about all the maint. but it's worth it, had a bunch of 5 acre parcels but the wife put me down to a half acre. I sure miss it especially know that I'm into this airguning. Are you using a box call or a mouth reed ? well you got some scouting in hehehehe. Good luck neeeext week

I had a cedar box one that had a handle on top & you would put chalk on it but can't remember the name ,it came from texas. anyway gave it to my brother. I use to call my neighbors pet tom over all the time, then I'd call him up & tell him get the d--- bird out of my yard (lol). He never did figure it out, boy he would get pissed off trying to get it back home. I would watch him from the front window & laugh my butt off. Those calls work pretty good I should have kept it. Well good luck hunting nice talking to ya. Darell

In response to brains post,

"It’s legal in California but no springers. Gun must be Air or gas powered"

Brain, for clairfication, a Springer does operate with compressed air and is a legal means of taking Turkey in CA. With a .177 being minimum caliber one can use.
When unsure please call the fish and wildlife office prior to posting, they are very helpful.

I enjoy taking Turkey with air rifle. I personally use my .22 cal EDgun and have since hung up my shotgun. I am considering using a Springer next as to further my experience using air rifles.

This year's tom was taken with Edgun .22 at 55 yards, 20 lb field weight. Nice bird and good tasting with all the trimmings,

Brian enjoy your hunting and or shooting. I felt I needed to bring clarification to the post and expect you would do the same for me.

Cheers
