Tuning Marauder Field and Target .22 question

Has anyone tried adjusting the hammer spring for more power on the Marauder Field and Target? I like the idea of a regulator but most reviews put the .22 at only around 20-23 foot pounds. Was wondering if it’s possible to get it closer to 30 foot pounds without touching the regulator. I understand the shot count would be reduced and I’m good with that.

Thanks!

YUP ... word is the Engineers ( or a lack of engineering ) or understanding of regulators has this Field and Target version of the marauder falling short.

You would be FAR AHEAD buying a regular M-rod if even a custom shop gun with the LW barrel ... then having it modified for a regulator like we have been doing for years now !!

For the dollars spent adding a REG after the fact along with a Light weight hammer, you will end up with a superior gun over the factory F&T model.

From looking at the reviews, the reg is set somewhere between 1400 and 1500 PSI. It's sufficient to drive the 14.3 pellets at over 800 fps, but with a setting that low, more power just isn't possible. Crosman states that for F&T, it's a moderate power level, and that it is NOT adjustable.

If you want more power, pick up an unregulated Marauder and install an after market like the Huma or the Audrius off eBay. (I am tuning an Audrius on my Marauder now). The Audrius comes set at 2000 to 2200 PSI, so much more power is available to work with. Both Huma and Audrius are also adjustable, so if you want to set at 1800 psi, and adjust from there, you can do it.

As for a LW barrel, check out the new Crosman barrels. They are excellent. Not sure what accuracy you want, but my 5 year old Gen2 can do a 1.5 inch group at 75 yards, so plenty accurate for light hunting. New barrels are supposedly much better. It really is a good little gun.

I agree with every thing said so far but also remember, this IS marketed as a Field target rifle and that being said the power is limited to 20 Ft./Lb. so why would you expect it to be big power? Not trying to start an argument just saying!!

No .. it IS NOT marketed as a Field Target rifle ! .... It is Field AND Target.

* issue for the unknowing is HOW Crosman set up the gun internally for the regulator ( And why it is screwed up )

They placed the regulator up against the valve body and then placed the gauge manifold against the regulator ... in this configuration the gauge reads tank pressure BUT the valve has almost no plenum volume and the why you can't get much more power even if you do raise the reg set point.

In there attempt to keep the gauge reading fill pressure ... the cart got ahead of the horse and no one at Crosman was on the ball enough to catch this mistake in design.

I also fell into a hole with the field & target, but with all the parts by Tim Hill and JS it is possible to make the mrod work better, if crosman would move the gage port hole foreward you could at least use the air tube when you change the regulator, that being said Jefferson state is sending me a tube to replace the crosman regulated tube, I really like the new regulated stock desing … too bad its costing so much to make the regulated gun work nice.... the plain new marauders with the new barrels are the place to start. ive changed the valve and hammer and other than the crosman reg its a sweet shooting gun now, soon to have the JS aluminum air tube and a new huma reg installed , its milking a lot of dollars from me but atleast I like the gun and the way it shoots!

My Marauder is 5 years old, and stock except for the new regulator I'm still tuning. Great entry level gun, barrels are just fine. Other than the reg, I've replaced a couple O-Rings. No other replacements and shoots great. Get the Marauder, start small and buy a regulator if you wish. you can start replacing with after market parts if you want, but I've never seen a reason to go after market. Your call

Great information and insight to help with the decision.

If I may ask one more question, for those that have installed a regulator in their Marauda, what are you getting for a shot string if tuned to around 28-30 foot pounds? I’m sure there are many other variables (other mods and so on) so just looking for a ball park.

Thanks again for all the great info

im in the thick of it ….. im dealing with a custom shop mrod with a walther barrel and reg, 22cal. I couldent push a 16 gr. fast enough to get it to stableize with out it blowing a bunch of air out the barrel with each shot, woosh! opend the transfer port all I could, not much difference . but with a better valve hammer and transfer port and opening the barrel at the transfer port the gun now shoots a nice 40 shots with a 2700 psi fill. with out cronografing it im probably around 900 . ft. sec. because im this deep into this thing and still not happy with the reg , the huma sitting in my drawer doesn't want to go in with out a fight so im waiting on a custom lenth aluminum tube from Jefferson state , and a nylon hammer , im guessing ill get 50 great shots all said and done, the gun does real well now, should be a real good shooter when im done, as should be! all crosman needs to do is move the gage port foreward so we can have enough room to install a reg that works good, I think crosman needs to do some catching up on what it takes to make a regulated gun really work, if I knew what I knew now I would have bought a un regulated mrod, but I do like the field & target stock desing

In January 2019 I bought the field and target in 22cal. I often wondered about adjusting from the factory tune. However, I can still hit squirrels at 35 yards plus or minus. I have contacted Crosman direct and was told that the regulators were set to 2000 psi plus or minus 50 psi. I also have the Crosman barrel using 14.3 grain pellets.

your about where I was with it. that pellet did well in mine as well! I had a few issues where the pellet tumbled coming out of the magazine and jammed , it did it a few times … so I went to a 15.95 gr (16) pellet no more jamming but the gun didn't want to tune for the extra power it needed to stabilize the heavier pellet without wasting a lot of air each shot, so that was useless ,, so now it has a Jefferson State "JSAR" aluminum tube with nylon hammer "A Tim Hill valve , larger transfer port , opened the breach up , and as of tonight a blue tim hill gage block with a huma reg on top of that! set at 1850psi, (LOTS OF PLENUM!!!) will be interesting to see what it does tomorrow ! " had to drill a new hole for the gage , its now back to where the original mrods gage would be! so now I it holds a HUMA !!! nice and quiet reg, no ping !, its a lot of $$$ to do this! so if your happy with your gun and its working for you , just be happy and go shoot and enjoy your self!!!

I unfortunately found this thread about 3 months after purchasing my field and target maurader. I had on my own tried to "tune it up" and have been able to increase fps by 15 using Crossman 14.3g round head pellets. The increase in power has hardly been worth the incredible loss of shot count. I think I'm wasting a great deal of air with each shot. Unfortunately, I did not properly log the changes I made and am now having a hard time going back to factory settings. Does anyone know how to get it back to factory settings?

Also, is it possible to switch the stock regulater with one of the ones recommended in this thread?

Sorry can’t help you with the settings. Maybe call Crosman customer support
As for an aftermarket regulator HUMA makes one for the FT Marauder

tuning is much easier with say a tim hill valve , those valves dont have problems and he can install a light valve spring for your regulated gun. he also sells a polymer large transfer port that is needed for regulated , also he sells a drill bit to open the barrel transfer port opening ,and a ball hone to clean up the edges of the port in the barrel so the pellet doesnt catch a sharp edge being pushed past the opening and avoid chafing during loading into the barrel , youll need a much lighter hammer and hammer spring , tim hills lightest hammer spring is just about right and will drop right in and is short enough to allow for free flight of the hammer , i like JSAR nylon hammer, less binding smoother "BUT" you MUST really clean the silicone all out behind the valve before installation ! any left behind that gets inside will gum up the hammer and youll have to clean it out again ! its a pain at that point , clean cleal clean !, transfer ports are cheap , buy a few if you do this , they are polymer and distort if you remove them after installation so i keep a few around . and buy extra orings just incase , ANYWAY...... this should make your gun shoot good !
