Tuned R9 and R1

Had a chance tonight to run my freshly tuned springers over the chrono. I'm thrilled with the performance.

Both in .177 shooting 7.9gr Crosman Premiers, the R9 averaged 882 over ten shots, the R1 averaged 993 over ten shots. I'm thrilled with these two, they are smooth, vibration free, fast, and accurate. Ed Krzynowek did the work, his attention to detail and perfection is outstanding.

Those are good numbers. I think my R1 with 6-7 gr . pellets was only getting 980 fps at best.

I can only imagine what numbers I'd get with a super light pellet. Frankly I'm a bit afraid to try them for fear of wrecking something but I know the tuner used Beeman Silver Bears for his chrono work.

Years ago the first R1 I ever owned shot these numbers with Beeman Lasers but I imagine they'd go super sonic in this rifle and be worthless. Eventually I hope to chrono several different higher quality pellets than the CPD's and record the numbers for future reference. On pure principal I only shoot heavy pellets in the field, around 9-10gr. These 7.9 were bought primarily for the R9 and that's what I'll use in it. The R1 will be seeing some heavies for regular use.

When I first bought my .177 R1 I got 1000fps with the Beeman Laser pellet. I think they were even lighter than the Silver Bear. After a couple months the velocity dropped into the 980's. Not sure if dieseling was an issue at first or the spring just became weaker after a thousand shots or so. ??? The Japanese Silver Jets were accurate and I think they shot in the 900fps range. I don't recall what they weigh. I can't believe the prices those Beeman San Rafael Silver Jets are fetching on Ebay. I saw a single box of .22 cal go for $66. !! Two boxes went for over $100. Lots of .177cal Silver Jets as well. My only concern in buying any of them is oxidation. They are 20-25 years old.

I have two boxes of the old Silver Jets I'm going to dump on the Bay at some point. One may still be taped shut, the other is missing a few because years ago I gave them a try. And very true about the oxidation. Sealed up or not, they will still get that powdery white coating on them unless they were heavily oiled when new. They never worked in anything I've shot them out of and I can't imagine what the appeal is.

They were the only pointed pellet that shot accurate in my .177 R1 and RX1 .20 cal. The RX1 was extremely accurate with these. My Crow Magnum III (Theoben Eliminator) in .22 cal never shot any pointed pellet worth a darn. Don't think my Sig ASP20 will be any different. In fact, I've never had any .22cal springer shoot pointed pellets accurately.

We've kind of gotten off subject, but talking about Silver Jets, I could never get very excited about them either. Very attractive looking pellet but didn't shoot well in either my .177 or .20 R1's. Quite a few years ago now some guy posted a WTB add for Silver Jets. I responded and he offered me a ridiculous amount of money for them. I asked him if he was crazy and sold them to him for what it cost me to replace them with Kodiaks, which shoot much better in my guns.

The stocks on your R9 and R1 are absolutely beautiful!

Thanks, I like the original stocks very well. The R1 stock has a hole next to the toe where a previous abuser installed a swivel stud I need to repair but other than that it's in fine condition for it's age (it's a West German made gun).

The R9 Dad bought new and it's stock is in like new condition.

...........the domed silver ace pellets were even better. both silver jets and silver ace pellets were made in a garage by a japanese family and had very high quality control. that powdery residue is the dried out lube they used - it was like mineral oil. i loved them. my diana 36 loved them. i bought them here in ft.worth from mike at firearms unlimited. i think the .177's were around 6-7 bux back in 1985. but i hated that they used a cardboard box for packaging - i always messed that up because i'd carry my pellets in my back pocket. i dunno if i would pay so much for them nowdays, either tho.. i forgot what the original japanese packaging called them before beeman began to import and rebadge them, but same pellets. ..........hmmm...........back to the tuned weirauchs.........i had a .20 r9 goldfinger with vortek pg2 tune kit that i bought from a guy in calif who was laid off and needed the money. $350 shipped and it had a brand new .22 barrel with it. i never had to take a tool or adjust anything on that masterpiece... the guy said he would go into the back room when his wife's family came over and polish the sear and everything else on that gun compulsively. john yarborough - that's him....i have never had a gun that i didnt have to anything to except his masterpiece. .. that .20 shot 800-804 fps everytime with 11.4 ftt pellets. is was a slightly better gun than my .177 walther lgv. i sold it to pay bills - like a dummy. most all r9's ive had in .177 (and r11's) shoot around 880 fps with 8 grainers. the r1 is just too heavy - about like an rx-1...... i had one in .22 that was a carbine. i let tom gaylord shoot it at a lasso event in east texas. he implied that i could have done better , but he's supposed to be the goto guy for r1 info nowdays. i've heard of folks getting more like 820 fps in .22 with a good r1 that ha been sunnen honed, which makes it a perfect 360 degrees inside that tube. all of the stock r1's i've had shot 765-770 with 14.3's..... much better of with that powered up r9 in .20......that caliber in that gun with the vortek kit is a magical thing that i light enough to carry around and still has 17-18 ftlbs of squirrel / grackle killing power. and accurate as poop. - paul.
