trying to pick a .25 for hunting Benjamin trail xl or hatsan 125

My .02 on the Benji Trail XL. Mine is a .22 and it's very accurate and has plenty of power out to 40 or 50 yards, the furthest I've ever shot it. I get about 24 #s fpe with JSB Kings 15.89 gr. pellets averaging about 870 fps .It also does very well with the 18.13 JSBs. I had the OEM CP. 3-9X40 AO scope on it for several hundred rounds and never had any problem with it. It now lives on a Hatsan Striker .22 and continues to perform just fine with hundreds of rounds through it. I replaced the original scope with a Centerpoint 4-16X40 AO just because I saw one on clearance at Walmarts a couple years ago for $50 and couldn't resist buying it for that price. The oem trigger WAS pretty bad so I put a CDT GRTIII in it almost immediately--problem solved.
Now for the cons. It is very heavy and very long as mentioned. It's a job cocking it for any length of time using just one arm. Because of these things I only use it for plinking off my deck with my hand underneath it on a rolled up old towel. If I'm going to shoot more than 12 rounds or so I cock it with the rifle's butt on the deck between my legs and use both hands on the muzzle to cock. Using both hands I can shoot a lot of shots with no problem. I CAN cock it ok with just one arm but wouldn't want to for very long, I'm an old fart with pretty bad arthritis--71 years young! For me, I'd never attempt to shoot it offhand or haul it around in the boonies hunting. To be honest I seldom use it much anymore. I've got too many other break barrels that are much less work to shoot and since I've got into PCPs as well the XL pretty much stays in the cabinet.
It's been a good rifle for me but I wouldn't buy one again at this point in my life. I knew what I was getting into when I purchased it and it didn't disappoint. Hope this is some help.

hy oldcorps, yea iam 57 and starting feel the old bones.for the prices these days its hard to buy a springer thats really good for less than 300 dollars. but there are many pcp at 400 that work so well and accuracy is much improved. ill all ways have a springer i just love them. these new pcp are light comfortable come with mag 8 to 10 rounds u get 16 shoots out of the maurader .25 at full power and i am getting 28 shoots to the fill in my gamo urban with na 10 round mag. my average fps is 790 with the jsb 15.89. the gun is like 6 pounds and smooth as butter. pcp is the way to go.

I know I'm waaaay late on this, but I thought I would add. I got a Hatsan 125 two days ago. I'm 16, and I weigh 130lbs soaking wet... In 48 hours I've put over 700 shots through mine, and at fifteen yards, it's hole in hole... I haven't put it on paper at 50 yards yet, with the crosman premiers... The crosman hollowpoints at fifty yards go about 4", but they really just don't shoot that well anyhow. I'm going to get JSB Diablo Exacts, and H&N Snipers and try them, as I think a heavier pellet will shoot a lot nicer. Anyhow, I'd really recommend the Hatsan 125 over the Trail XL, and while I never shot the Trail XL (I have handled them, and they don't have as nice of a feel imho, but that may be a bit biased), I can tell you from comparing the two air rifles for a year, that the 125 is almost definitely a better buy.
And it's not a hard gun to cock once broke in... Or shoot for that matter... The vortex one at least :)

Joey ( Airgun-Noob)I'm sure you are a nice young man . But the beauty of the forum is sharing experiences with others . Especially First Hand experience. Having owned MANY airguns ( including the two being compared here)and having at least a Tiny bit of experience feel free to disagree with anything me or anyone else here says. Save the negative accuracy for more serious stuff .... Not for when a guy who has ACTUALLY owned and shot both guns in this topic has a different outlook .
Some of us here take our Accuracy at least Semi-serious . Leaving negative accuracy is a really use full tool here . And if you will look , you will see I didn't return the " favor " .
Enjoy your Hatsan and feel free to post groups and such . The springer section is a lot of fun with great guys who are always here to help .
No hard feelings , just a tip from an old dude
