Two cheap and effective Tripod head options

The other day someone asked about options for mounting their gun to a tripod. There were a couple of responses including the hog saddle, the Really Right Stuff S.O.A.R. system and others.

I have a hog saddle type holder for one of my tripods that I made from construction materials. Basically the internal framework is a Simpson 4"x4" wood hanger covered with 1/2" insulation in varying thicknesses and that is covered with camouflage duct tape. Although this little tripod head has worked flawlessly since we made it, the drawback is that it cannot be tightened so the gun can't be left unattended without fear of it falling over.

I thought about buying a new S.O.A.R. system for my son who loves shooting off of a tripod but because Christmas is so near, I decided to wait. To the point... I rounded up some parts today including a small quick release picatinny adapter, nuts/bolts, a camera/tripod plate and other small parts. In about an hour I built a small quick release picatinny rail with a camera plate bolted to it. I cleaned it up, put some paint on it and viola, a strong, durable piece of kit that's exactly what I needed for free. Not as pretty as the one on my PRS riflenut much, much cheaper. Stoti
