Trigger time with a hot .177

I took a couple of my rifles out shooting today. I have to admit, I have not done a lot of shooting. Ever. With a high power .177.

Color me impressed. Non-existent recoil impulse, extremely low air consumption, near silent report, and that flat trajectory!

I think for my locale (lots of woods, and little wind) this might be the ticket!

The gun is a Hatsan Nova Star. I've done a lot of work to it fixing problems here and there. The gun is also detuned for several reasons. The barrel has some low and high spots in the bore, but the choke is tight. The twist rate is either 18:1 or 17.7:1, not %100 sure which, but I have done my best to measure it. I have lapped it a bit, as well, to loosen it up for slugs. But not so much that it won't shoot pellets. It does group monster RD's extremely well @920fps. And I'm honestly finding the monsters retain a lot more speed at distance than any .22 pellet I've used. I've been shooting NSA 12gr slugs with it as well, and they do nearly as good. But do get a flier here and there. I need to get some griffin slugs to test out.

Shooting at various distances out to 75 yards... I almost never shoot for groups, today being no exception. I considered it, but was having too much fun shooting how I normally do. Honestly just shooting whatever target I want, however I want. Most standing rested. Some crouched, some standing free-hand. I didn't pull out my bipods, table, chair, or sandbag, although I did have them. I don't ever use those when actually hunting, so just as well I don't practice with them. But are great for testing/dialing in a gun.

The un-regulated Hatsan yields a solid 80 shot string @28FPE with a SD of 8.4 FPS. using a .22 caliber barrel. This .177 barrel uses noticeably less air. 😎 And hits very hard at range.

If you haven't tried out a "high powered" .177, you might want to give it a shot :)

Have a 177 Eun Jin (Seneca) Sumatra long rifle and 177 Daystate Pulsar HP and such BEASTS.

I wouldn't doubt Hatsans too I had to turn down my 177 Vectis and Flash to their minimum to shoot regular weight pellets.

They are quite simply... SMOKING...

I shoot the 13.43 gr JSB at about 930 FPS , I just opened up a tin of 16.20 gr JSB pellets and the drop was only about an inch at 48 yards, Didn't get a chance to test the speed, But easy to crank the speed up on my Vulcan #2 in 177,

Still waiting for my Uragan 177 with 530 cc bottle, shot count is going to be crazy..

Seems the 177 pellets like the faster FPS , Least my gun does, Had the JSB 10 gr bumping 1000 FPS and were very accurate at 48 yards,

More testing soon,

Mike

Hi, What FPE is the Hastan 177 shooting at? I didn't find that info in you post.

I have to agree, a stout .177 is a lot of fun. Make no mistake about it, I really enjoy my 12fpe setup for lots of things…it has such a calm character thanks to a lightweight MDS nylon hammer (~10 grams) and PEEK poppet. So sedate that it conceals the fact it’s plenty of energy for a decent trajectory out to 50 yards or so, and enough for squirrels and such over similar distances. But then I built up a similar setup at 24fpe and it surprised me. Not much different in terms of its character, either the report or the recoil, but delivers a distinctly more satisfying smack at the other end. At the moment I have it backed down a bit for happiness with pellets in the 9 – 11gr range, keeping things under 950fps with the regulator at a little under 100 bar (1400psi). That works beautifully for everyday fun in the neighborhood.

Love my .177 Red Wolf Hp, walnut stock beauty. With Heluboard, many pellet choices and fps/fpe settings.

My RAW .177 HM1000 is a VERY accurate 20 ft-lb gun. 100+ shots and deadly quiet.

The trend to larger caliber pellets and slugs has many missing the enjoyment of the humble .177. Such easy, sweet shooters, cheap ammo and great shot counts.

Those wolf's seem to be at the top of the .177 food chain. The Raw is unregulated as well, correct? Nice to have something that functions so well with no worries of reg creep, leak, or failure.

Hi, What FPE is the Hastan 177 shooting at? I didn't find that info in you post.

It's set at 25 fpe. Currently. It was shooting at around 36 out of the box.

Shooting my Daystate Red Wolf .177 HP and pushing the JSB Beast 16.20 gr at 1020 FPS with great accuracy and 37.43 FPE 💪😀

Really like this high power .177 setup - Hoping my Daystate Delta Wolf .177 HP will be here next week 😉🙏🎯

Now that is smoking! Have you tried slugs? I was having a real hard time differentiating any speed variance or drop versus the monsters I was shooting. POI was almost identical.

The new deltas look like they will be a lot of fun to work with. So many cool features 😎

I had some 16gr eun Jin pellets, and the gun likes them too, I didn't have any with me, though. But the lack of drop was really noticeable versus my .22 shooting slugs just as fast or faster actually. Maybe there is another variable at play...

530cc and a regulator... Man, what 200 shots? Lol. I've got a 580cc bottle, but can't ever bring myself to use it on either gun. Guns are bulky enough as is, lol.

I've noticed a lot of airgun barrels lately are moving toward smoother bores. I think this is lending to higher speed accuracy due to the fragility of pellets? Thin skirts and all

The rifling in the hatsan barrel is interesting... It has a large number of very small lands. Maybe 10 or 12?

Yes I shoot slugs often 👍🎯

I swage my own 16 gr hollow point slugs, but also shoots the NSA 15 gr 😃

A few of us went out to our somewhat local range on Weds shooting our HP air rifles at 75 & 100 yards.

JSB Monsters in .22 shot at @ 1020 or so still more accurate than any slugs tried. Not by much but a little.

We had a light breeze the last hour or so and this was creating @ 2 mil windage shift with pellets and was only @ 1/2 to 1/3 mil correction required with slugs.

in shooting my .30 cal at 80 fpe, the .22 at @ 48 fpe the lowly little .177 shooting NSA 12.5's at @ 1060 fps and the 15's @ 980 managing @ 30fpe were the MOST ACCURATE

Yup i too really enjoy these small caliber ice picks !!

😲 Mild cross-wind? That's pretty tight grouping there!

Hmmm How about that.... You'd think the .30 or maybe a .22 slug shooter would best the .177, but it is quite formidable. Definitely due it's respect. I'm still pretty well surprised how hard those itty bitty slugs of mine were hitting @ 75 yards, even at 25fpe. Shoot, I'm still a bit baffled as to why or how the pellets were doing about the same 🤔 Made my .22 look lazy

Cedric, (Tofazfou) Jumped on the bandwagon a couple of years ago. with his 17 HM Air. it was a .172 as there were not slugs available in .177 then. It was very impressive.

I wouldn't mind building a 17 however it will have to be able to use a mag for slugs as my old arthritic hands cannot load them easily in a single shot.

It will have to be a .172 in order to be able to cast for it, as I simply can no longer afford aftermarket, pellets or slugs.

I already have the TJ's bbl. Now to decide if I want to put it into the raptor or something else. 😉

It will be a fun project hat I have been toying with in my mind for awhile now, just been caught up in the .223 and .218 in the Raptor of late. It is very impressive as well.
