Trends with PCP Guns

I was reading here enjoying my coffee this morning and realized , how things in our industry have advanced and kind of gone back to what it was ,

What I mean is around 2008 PCP guns were gaining popularity and the .22 caliber was what was popular then came the .25 caliber after 10 years then the 30 caliber became popular , and the .22 seemed to fade interest , Now the .22 caliber is back and seems to have turned to being very popular again ,

You see I live in North East where public hunting was always .22 caliber only , dont ask me why , so around the year 2008 I started making slugs for my guns to reach out further and now since I would say 2018 they are gaining more and more popularity , do you guys see the same thing???

well, a few ideas come to mind, in regards to the climb to 25 cal and 30 cal can be attributed to a shooters curiosity to shoot with more power and authority. but after a stretch of time the reality of cost per shot as well as noise challenge can come into play. out west there is all the room in the world, much less so in the northeast in general comparison. that being said, i still believe cost per shot is still biggest motivator. especially with guns pushing more power to shoot heavy 22 cal pellets and slugs. so the hitting power is there. once that is done , the more economical aspect of shooting 22 cal becomes more attractive.

I have 22, 25 and 30 (impact) and a few other airguns, after a year of so, the one I like the most for my use is the 22, huge shot count and very precise. If we consider headshots, you can put down a hog if you do it right and with the right amount of FPE.

I think will all depend on the main use and the wind conditions, as for the slugs I think they are becoming popular since the are reaching same accuracy than pellets with less curve (and more FPE) it might be the future, but also I believe over 22 can be very "politic" and dangerous for our sport (banning) . (and 22 too) donno just thinking outloud

I just can speak for myself but with airguns usually target are between 30 mt to 80 mt , for me and today pellets are enough, I want to try slugs (already order slug liner and nsa slugs) but considering the cost and the results (meaning for me pellets are good, I do not have extreme conditions or shoot often over 100 yards + the cost rate today is 1:4 or more meaning 1 slug equals 4 pellets or so ) I believe I will stick with pellets, and I will use slugs sometimes if the conditions ask for slugs.

(side note: is summer time where I live so i have to much time to be in this forum jajaja, reading and learning!)

Well, I'm from Mexico... I live in Baja.
Most of my friends in the shooting club use .22 cal rifles, mostly because of the availability of pellets. Even if you run out of pellets, you can just go to walmart and buy a $6 dllr tin of crosman hollow points and you get 500 shots. That will get you shooting for some time.

In my case, I have a .25 cal FX Crown... and I have ran out of pellets twice. Another friend has a .25 marauder and he ran out of pellets as well.
No one had pellets to spare with us so we had to wait almost two weeks to get our shipment from AOA.

I don't consider the price a big factor, considering that a tin of .22 cal JSB Monsters is around $10 bucks for 200 pellets (exact monsters) and mine are $16 for 300 pellets in.25 cal 33.0 grain MK1.

I want to shoot slugs too, it seems to be the hype nowadays, but, $15 bucks + 7 shipping for 100 slugs? That's not cheap bro considering that there's only small game here where I live (Ie. Rabbits, doves, pigeons, house sparrows, quails)... It may be not worthy, at least for me.

A JSB 33.9 Grain Heavy King MK1 will do just fine for an animal like the ones I've just mentioned.

There are personal preferences which come into play. For me the key advantage to air guns is the ability to use them in area's where fire arms are a disadvantage . There are economic advantages however in my case when you consider what I've spent I could fuel a powder burner for decades with what I've invested in air guns and accessories. BUT I can shoot my guns in my back yard which means a lot to me. I have a very nice sportsmen club with in 5 miles of my home and I use it often but it's still great to be able to shoot right here at the house.

So for me the big bore air rifles don't don't hold much advantage, Slugs? well I haven't gotten into slugs due to the cost and I question how much I might be able to use them. Certainly I see advantages if you are shooting. beyond 100 yards but then you also have to be concerned about potential damage and back stops etc. Seems as if we are approaching the range and energy of a 22 rim fire and rather then going the direction of slugs I might consider a suppressor for my 22 lr. About the only difference in performance would be the report of the gun.

What I have seen with PCP guns that is of interest to me is the improvement of accuracy and shot count ( use of regulators) and the introduction of the electronic platforms like the daystate rifles. I know there are those who question the reliability and dependability of those gums but my opinion as of today is that they are wonderfully fun and nice to shoot and if I was to predict the future I will predict improvements in technology will advance the sport of air gunning. With electronics leading the way. I don't look for big bore guns to go away but the 22 and 177 will always be the main stay. We'll just find better ways to build better guns.

The interest and use of air guns will increase due to the limitations placed on powder burners. And of course the video games seem to have negatively affected the youngsters interest in all of this.

I think the trend for states starting to legalize airguns for hunting big game should worry us all. When the "powers that be" realize that means just how lethal airguns are, we will be seeing regulation and possible registration down the road.

I been thinking about that for a while now, not only in USA, totally agree

Until they regulate black powder stuff we're probable OK. Unless some one does a mass shooting with their Daystate.

Yup, think you're correct.

As much as I hate new gun laws,, with the current capabilities these large caliber ag have, in the hands of the wrong people it could be disastrous. Fact is a ag with hundreds of fpe is a deadly weapon. Its just that the lawmakers haven't really fully realized this everywhere.

As much as all of us don't want this, might be good for some basic laws to restrict those that are proven dangerously mentally ill, homicidal manics, people with criminal intent, etc. All it would take in today's political climate is some sic homicidal maniac getting their hands on a bb AG with multiple 10 round mags and hurting people or worse . That would be enough for our government to create very very restrictive Federal ag laws. Might be a good preemptive move for the industry/us to put some basic non restrictive rules/laws we all can live with in place before something bad happens that allows the powers that be to come down hard on us with draconian laws heavily restricting ag ownership/use...

At this time in American history a felon that just got out of prison for violent felonies (maybe murder..?) can buy a large caliber AG legally in most states if I'm not mistaken. While most would be a responsible ag owner we'd hope, all it takes is 1 bad apple.

The writing is on the wall guys...

I don't think the powers at be will bother with pellet guns. I mean kids are slaughtering their class mates with ARs, and you can still go buy one at Wal-Mart. If a felon wants a fire arm he/she will get one. Why would they bother with pellet gun, and the big bore, you think they would go threw the trouble of buying one to rob the corner gas station. No they just go steal a toy gun from Wal-Mart, and I am sure their are plenty of felons who have used co2 clone pistols. What year was it 1978 or 9 the law of a felon not having a gun came into exsistance. So before then it wasn't a problem?Their are plenty of non felon people who commit crimes with guns daily. Then they become legally defined as a felon only after a conviction. That guy in Vegas wasn't a felon until after he shot 50 something people. I believe in Texas a felon can keep a fire arm at home for his/her protection. Some times people become felons by mistake, and may not even be violent. Personally I feel felons should have the ability to defend themselves just as everyone else. The police don't care about coming to the aid of a person who was.convicted 50yrs ago. It's the reality, at least that's what every law enforcement person has told me. Anyways you don't need a.gun to commit crimes. We as a country may be better off if we all wernt allowed to have weapons of war. Who needs a Barret 50 anyways? Or a 308 with a 30 plus round magazine, or really why do you need an AR to hunt. The 223 is a lowsy round for hunting. The 223 was designers to injure not kill. You enjure 1 guy, you just took him and two other guys out of the fought to care for the guy you shot. All you really need is a 12Gage. It will take any animal on the planet except maybe a charging rhino or a humpback whale. Why does anyone need anything more n a bolt action or pump action? I can't stand those guys who.duck hunt with semi autos and the only take the breast.

Anyways their isn't any legislation regarding felons with archery, crosbows, and some states don't consider muzzle loaders fire arms. If no one has bothered with that stuff that in some cases like bow n arrow humans have been killings humans with those for longer than the bible has been.around

Anyways. What's going to be the next big thing in PCPs? Maybe the .20 will come back? I like to think maybe the next thing will be advancment in projectiles, or guns that will shoot more bullet like projectiles, air guns that shoot closer to firearms probably.
