Way to go Donny, I new you could do it. And I heard in your voice how happy and proud your were, and you should be. I have seen those 300 yard coke can shoots, and new you and the gun where capable. Get another one so we can have some barbeque.

You were my inspiration and information for doing my FP and it has been quite the little slug flinging pest killer ever since. I've lost count of the skunks it's deleted this year, with the furthest about 85 yards at night with a full moon for my only illumination.

Youve GOT to video that next time! Long time small cal fan. Ive got 4-17 fireballs, 17 ackley hornet, 17 rem, 17-204, and a 17 squirrel. That is so awesome to drop a 200+ lb boar in its tracks with a 17 slug. Congrats! Probably felt pretty good seeing all that tuning come together!! 

I wish I could have recorded that one! Unfortunately, I don't have a scope cam of any type. I've thought about getting one many times, but never could get myself to pull the trigger on one. A decent one is pretty expensive, and I can spend that money on more bullets and tuning I may get one someday though. You do have a few 17s don't ya, haha. All of those are cool guns. You can do a lot with a .17, as long as the accuracy is there...

Yes, I was beyond happy to get that boar with the .177, and I've been working on making it happen for a while now. I was very fortunate to get that perfect shot I'd been hoping for. I'm not done with the .177 projects either. I'm just waiting on a couple blanks to get back to it I hope to get my .22 slug shooter some bacon in the next week or two. I wouldn't be surprised if I got a full pass through on a head shot with it. I haven't decided on the tune I'll be using, but I will likely be in the 65-70+ fpe range with NSA 28.5 or 31.2 grain slugs.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience. Its good to know what works particularly in terms of fpe!, caliber, grain wt of projectile and fps. It also helps to know in what context of how to use what works. (not sure if that made sense)

I understand what you mean. Whenever I see a hunting post, especially on larger game, I want to know all the details myself. That's why I try to include as many as I can without taking away from the story. The thing about the small bores(especially .177), is you have to know your own limits and those of your gun. Then, try to put yourself in a hunting situation where you can easily stay within those limits.

That's pretty impressive! And answers my question of if a .22 would do the job. I might have to take mine along when I go next year 

A .22 can most definitely do the job, provided the shot placement and power are there. I wouldn't try it with a weak .22 though. I'd want at least 45-50 fpe in .22 on average pigs, and 60+ fpe on big ones. I'm not saying less can't do it, but I want to make darn sure myself  

As a token of interest a ballistics Gunsmith experimented with a new Deer rifle in the mid 70s which used a tiny .170 bullet. His experiments concluded, that provided velocity was super high, the tiny pellet would kill through shock. Not kinetic shock you normally expect from a big slug but shock wave. Interesting.
