Time for another gun....

Hey fellow air gunners, I am at that delicious point of time when one gets to make a decision on a new gun. My goal is Multi shot, carbine size and .22 or .25 caliber and once in 5 years kind of purchase. My other hobbies and family duties will make this a once in a long-while decision. I have a few PCP in mind that fit the gun shaped hole in the budget....

MROD Varmint
~200 - can't find much about these guns on the net. There was some buzz before they were available and few people posted initial thoughts, but there has been little to no follow up posted. I understand MROD is a small shop. I seem to have read that the stock is right shoulder bias - but cannot swear to it. As a lefty, that would be a deal breaker.
POSITIVES - easiest on the budget at around 200.00, 10 shot magazine 20.00 additional magazines.
Not so positives - no track record for the gun, very little review data available

Benjamin Prod
~310 shipped free on Friday- 'nuff said. Most likely will be my choice when all is said and done.
POSITIVES - My closest shooting partner has one and is quite happy with it. The size and aftermarket options appeal. Great service and history for the gun and manufacturer. Lots of tuning ability and well documented.
Not so positive - Higher cost and the standard stock looks to be too low on the cheek. Both can be overlooked due to the positives mentioned above.

~350-500 Brocock S6 and Enigma- wow, sexy little carbines fer shure. I am smitten by these delicate English beauties, but I understand that these are out of production and parts are hard to come by. I fear getting a lemon and being disappointed. I like the metal magazine. Power level on par with Prod at around 16 FPE. Again, I am frustrated by the dearth of information that I have found on the Brocock guns (maybe I am just spoiled by the plethora of info on the PRod?) Were I to be certain of them, I would skip lunch for another month to make the budget fit the Brocock instead of the Prod.

Ahhh, it is fun to have the luxury of decisions.

Thanks for the thought Tony. I have handled the Mrod and feel that it is too heavy for a fun tote-around gun. From the bench I would not have any problems with it. My son has the Benjamin Maximus in .177, which by comparison is very light and a pleasure to walk the bush with.

I have closely considered getting another Maximus for me, but after getting to shoot the magazine fed Prod and Mrod, the single shot does not appeal so strongly. I bought my son the .177 so he could shoot it with his High School air rifle team, as it turns out their equipment is already pretty high dollar. - I should have gone with the .22 in the first place and not worried about him shooting his own gun for ROTC.

If you like to tinker with your guns, get the PRod as you can add an adjutable folding AR stock, upgrade the barrel adjust the power and add a moderator (onto the aftermarket barrel). It would make an excellent backpack gun with a folding stock.
If you don't like to tinker, get the Brocock as it is excellent out of the box and a joy to shoot (and all for less than a PRod that has been modified).

Jim,
I have had the Varmint in my hand and would not suggest it, your Maximus is a better rifle. Mags are not very sturdy. It also is very loud. The Brocock that is offered is not shrouded so be aware that it also could be loud. With Crosman, it can be a crap shoot with regards to shooting great out of the box. That being said, there is lots of help to get it shooting great. I have a .22 Marauder, just bought a .25, and will most likely get a P-rod. Although you may not get a "shooter" out of the box, they can be modified to be a GREAT shooters. You may have to factor these costs when you buy Crosman. That's why you can get them "so cheap". These are also great rifles to learn on. Lots of video. You may want to contact AJshoots about modifying your Maximus. After changing the trigger and some other mods, he was quite pleased with that rifle.

On another thread it was suggested to not buy a bunch of subpar rifles but to save up and get at least one good rifle. I think this is good advise. I have a .22 Cricket Carbine that Mena wants to steal. It really is fun to shoot. That being said, I have just as much fun shooting my .22 Marauder that actually out shoots it at 25 yards and shoots as well out to 50 yards. I take great satisfaction in taking a below average rifle and getting it to shoot as good as a $1,500 rifle. Yes I had to pay as much in mods as I did for the rifle but it still was under a grand. Will I be able to get my inveatment back; probably not but I won't be selling this rifle any time soon. I still have my 20 gauge shotgun as a youth. Chosing a Crosman rifle and modifying it up is a great alternative to paying out the nose for a quality rifle.
When I buy the P-rod, I will anticipate putting on a Marmot barrel, a regulator, and having it tuned. I hope to do this myself.
Hope this helps,
Doc

Tough decision to make.
Prod:
-AOA has one used for 250.00
-in stock form it shoots like a shotgun (at least mine did)
-If you decide to install a MM barrel, huma reg, bug buster scope, and a folding adjustable AR stock, you will know your gun inside and out but you will spend will over 700 for it.
-You can slowly get aftermarket parts one step at a time
-will make a great super compact squirrel/collard dove killer

Brocock s6:
-The 395.00 is without any shroud or LDC which might be really loud.
-The shrouded s6 is 579.00 which is still less then what I put into my gun.
-reviews say it gets 70 shots at 30 ft-lbs which is really cool. I'm getting about 16 shots at 15 ft-lbs.
-a lot longer then the prod and no adjustments to the stock.
-will have to pay all at once for the gun.
-still have to buy a scope.

Thanks Mena, I was pretty sure I could borrow your expetise. The issues mentioned here are pretty close to the thoughts that have been swirling around in my head for the last month. I get close to deciding on the Brocock then I swerve back to the tried and tru Prod.

the used Prod at AoA did not last for 12 hours, or it would have been delivered here already. I need to see if the performance bonus comes through before I can set a hard budget for this purchase.

if I was really good this year, I may even stretch to the Hatan Gladius. I need to shoot a bull pup sometjme. Thanks to all who chimed in, and thanks Doc for confirming my suspicion of the Mrod. I don't want to be dissapointed.

Hey Jim, I have a Brocock SL S6, and LOVE it! Here's my review.

http://www.airgunnation.com/topic/my-brocock-xl-s6-review/

You really only get 12-18 good shots per fill, but it is wickedly accurate, and SO fun to shoot. I often shoot with it hooked up to my scuba or carbon tank, once the tank is below 3000 psi, and shoot it like it was regulated. It is just crazy accurate.

Just purchase a .25 Marauder for $427.00 (25% AGNation discount) and free shipping if ordered on Fridays. I will spend about $300 for the Complete Hill package (with a regulator included). The barrels on the .25 have a good reputation. So for about $700 and a little time, I should have an awesome shooting rifle. Again there is alot of help to install everything and in the end, you have what others are paying $1500 for. I used my Marauder while hunting ground spuirrels with Mena and when I was out walking I had a single adjustable pole from PRIMOS to help steady the gun. I would venture to say that the Hatsan rifles are par with Crosman. You may need to invest a little to bring them to a consistent level. Yes, you could get a winner out of the box, but I don't believe they are regulated.
Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for all the advice and input, fellas. I decided on the P-Rod and have paid for one (like new, never shot ) on an auction site. We will see if it arrives as advertised. I spent a touch more than getting one from crosman, but the need to get shooting overcame the desire to wait for stock arrival at crosman.

Mena will soon be getting bombarded with questions. The deciding factor was not price, rather the volume of information about the gun. When I do get a Brocock, it will be new stock in curent production, ala Campato.

USPS says the gun has cleared El Paso... my town is next. MM Prod moderator ordered and will ship today. New 3x9x40 AO scope and Halo XL450 range finder order dropped at Amazon. Wahoo. Time to get some lead and refill the air tank. It is gonna be hard to make myself sleep the next few days, visions of Prods dancing in my head. Working the night shift usually sucks, it still sucks...but at least I will be home when the packages arrive.

OK the good news is that the gun arrived a day earlier than USPS predicted. Yea +1

The not so good news - the gun arrived with ZERO pressure. May be from a overly cautious shipper ooor it may have a leak. I left it tonight at 1000 psi, will check it again in the morning. The Benji hand pump is sufficient to put 2800 psi into the gun. I do not look forward to hand pumping all that often. Life is much better with the HPA tank. Thanks again to Mena.

The BAD news - the magazine that shipped with the deal is for the Mrod and not the Prod. The seller claimed the gun was new and unfired, tape on the pistol grip under the stock belies that sentiment. Tape residue on the scope rings makes me think it has been fired and tweaked with. I already have ordered correct magazine but will continue to pursue the "Significantly Not As Described" issue.

I had a hell of a time today shooing the gun. I should have been sleeping after an overnight shift but I could not make myself go to sleep. It was windy10-25 mph and there was no way I could get a consistent cheek weld on the stock. I was in too much of a rush to shoot the damn gun to take the time to address the eye-relief and check weld. I single loaded the gun and shot pellets all over the neighborhood while trying in vain to tune the scope. I should know better. I do know better. I could not stop myself.

Back to the good stuff. Mena loaned me a magazine to use until I get resolution from EBAY/Paypal about the SNAD issue. This will be my first PCP that I get to really tear into, and I am looking forward to taking on the "project" to build it out to be better than how I got it.

And tomorrow I am off-shift for a few days. I hope to have the gun printing on paper before I go back to work.

A lot of P-rod shooters fab up some kind of cheek riser to address the cheek weld issue.

You can use pipe wrap and zip ties for quick and dirty fix, the next level is a 3/4" or 1" dowel with a couple smaller dowels to give it some height like the example in the second pic.

That sucks that the seller lied to you like that. There seems to be so many dishonest sellers on eBay these days. If it wasn't for the buyer protection offered by PayPal and eBay then I'd never trust any purchase through them.

I make a point of not giving a seller the 5 stars that they all seem to nag for if they sent me something that was obviously broken befor it went in the box or if the product is not as described e.g. Used when they claimed it was new. Even if they correct it, it's always a bunch of hassle for a busy man to pack up and return broken items.

Anyway, back to the fun stuff, the great thing about the Marauder pistol and rifles is the amount of aftermarket upgrades available. For someone who likes to inves in the hobby in bite size chunks, it allows you to upgrade gradually over time. One of the best upgrades for the prod is the Marmot Militia barrel for $150 imo.

I had a go on a friend's one and it really made it a different gun. He also had a double air tube.
