Tier One FTR bipod review

I just wanted to do a brief review of the Tier One FTR bipod I bought a few weeks back. My boys and I shoot from a bench a lot and have used quite a few Accu Shot, Atlas bipods and more recently the Accu Tac, FC4-G2, WB4 and BR4 bipods. We love both Atlas and Accu Tac bipods, they’re well made, durable, adjustable, work as they should and look great too. However, I wanted a true F-Class bipod that was lower, wider and lighter with the same adjustability and the ability slide for repeatable accuracy from the bench.

I looked at Dolphin, Mystic Precision, Sinclair, Remple and Centershot but decided to go with the Tier One FTR because of the great reviews and after talking with Harry at Tier One, it sounded like it was exactly what I was looking for. The Tier One is made specifically for static shooting from a bench. It’s not for hunting or carrying around when you’re pesting. It’s 475mm wide at it’s lowest position and has an adjustment range of 120mm…It’s wide as you can see next to the FC4-G2 in the pictures! It’s also light at only 20.8 ounces but really feels lighter than that. It’s made from solid bar stock aluminum on a five axis CNC machine so although light, it still retains it’s strength.

What I immediately fell in love with is the ease of adjustment, it’s very smooth, light weight and has a very wide stance. It’s very solid feeling and is just the right height when using a small to medium rear bag. I also really like that the bipod is easily repositioned because of the integrated ski feet. I’ve only used this bipod for a short time but from a bench, none of the bipods I have used can compare to the FTR. It really is awesome, the stability and ease of use are phenomenal! I’ve used this bipod on the Red Wolf with a Picatinny mount and also with the Anschutz(T-Rail) on my Impact. It is very secure, easy to mount, adjust and manipulate on either of them. There is a large lever to adjust cant and two small wheels to adjust the tension for the elevation adjustment. Depending on the adapter being used there are other adjustments as well. The bipod comes with an Anschutz and swivel adapter but a Picatinny adapter is additional.

The bipod comes with either a black or silver(titanium) finish and there is also a carbon fiber version available. They are very well made, look great and are easy to manipulate from behind the gun. These bipods are expensive but like with almost everything, you get what you pay for. I ordered mine directly from Tier One, shipping was free and only took 5 days to the West Coast. The bipods come with a 30 day return policy and a lifetime warranty.

I’ve been working a lot lately, I’m tired and wanted to keep this short. If you have any questions, just ask. I’ll post the specs from the Tier One website below as well as a few pictures. The Tier One website is tier-one-usa.com

Here is some information from their website…

The Tier-One FTR Bipod is the ultimate in stability and repeatable accuracy. Designed for F-Class target rifle shooting, with an ultra wide footprint and high strength to weight ratio this F Class bipod will help any target shooter bring home the trophies. The FTR Bipod is tested successfully up to .50cal and is an excellent choice for extreme long range shooting.

MATERIALS

The FTR is manufactured from solid bar stock of aluminium alloy, on 5 axis CNC machinery, the FTR Bipod retains strength and integrity despite only weighing in at a class leading 530g.All aluminium surfaces once finished machining are comprehensively deburred leaving super smooth, anomaly-free surface and edges.Getting the critical faces and load bearing elements of the bipod finished to such a high standard leads to more reliable performance and longer life of the bipod, as well as greater accuracy from the bench. Finally, the bipod's aluminium surfaces are mil-spec hard-coat anodised to 30 microns in black or titanium grey enabling it to withstand years of use and abuse.

ADAPTERS & ATTACHMENT

Attaching the FTR to your target firearm is very straightforward: just use the supplied Anschutz, Freeland or sling swivel stud adapters for a completely secure fit. Getting on target is very easy with very small adjustments made possible by the precise capstan wheel. You can also adjust for cant using the tension lever until a suitable level of torque is reached. Running on ski feet, the FTR Bipod tracks as effortlessly on uneven terrain as it does on a shooting bench, giving the user a repeatable platform for each shot with minimal disturbance to the shooting position.

WHAT DOES IT COME WITH?

Every FTR Bipod comes standard with:

  • Sling Swivel adapter
  • Anschutz adapter
  • Cant block

ACCESSORIES

A hard case with laser cut foam recesses is also available to protect your FTR from drops and knocks (sold separately). You can also purchase additional adapters and cant blocks to help further customise your FTR.

Kevin, great review.

I was texting Jimmy Fuss back and forth about your setups. In your opinion, do you think a mechanical front rest ( like a Randolph or a similar rest) provides more stability than an Accu-Tac as an example? A very loaded question I realize, but just curious as to your thoughts just the same. You can PM me too if easier. Also, does that ‘bottle attach accessory’ shown on your Red Wolf come with the Tier 1?

I use a good Accu-Tac with my .22 Safari and RAW HM1000X, but I shoot a lot of 50/100 yard BR and I like the Tier 1.

Thanks

Tom

I think those rests are more stable if your gun is nestled in them securely, maybe. It’s kind of hard to say. It is a bit of a loaded question though…Apples/oranges. This FTR is so rock solid, it’s pretty crazy. WIth a good rear bag, it’s stable, really stable. I love it! I’ve actually never used a mechanical rest with any of my air guns, I have with centerfire rifles but not in the recent past. They are stable but so is this Tier One.

The bottle clamp on my Red Wolf is from Saber Tactical. It clamps to the bottle and then just has exposed picatinny to mount most bipods. The Tier One comes with a T-Rail mount and a swivel stud mount but the picatinny mount being used with the Red Wolf is extra. This bipod is very well worth the money if you shoot from a bench very often. Although I love Accu Tac bipods for certain things, this bipod is much more stable for shooting from a bench. With the integrated sled/ski feet, it’s also easier to move around on the bench and allows for the exact same recoil every single time. I wish I would have bought this bipod a lot sooner and will be buying one of the FTR Carbon models here in the near future. If you’re are ever considering one of these bipods, you wouldn’t need the picatinny adapter for your RAW, it will work perfectly with the integrated T-Rail. The rail on my Impact has a T-Slot too. The advantage to the T-Rail mount is that it keeps your gun even lower to the bench. ANyway, let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great rest of your weekend.

Great review Stoti. I'm digging the wide stance on that bipod. It's crazy to think that the Accu-Tac BR-4 G2 is slightly lighter in weight coming in at 20 ounces. That Tier Bipod comes in at 20.8 ounces after doing the conversion from grams. It does look heavier than it actually is. I'll be considering one of these for the bench. Thanks for the show & tell. +1 to you.

The FC4-G2 comes in closer to 30oz, I think it’s right about 28oz and the Tier One is right 20.8 oz. If I converted it correctly…590grams. The Tier One is definitely lighter by quite a bit but is also absolutely sturdy feeling and very well built. Both great bipods, just designed for different purposes. Sort of…A lot of people use the Accu Tac from the bench too, the Tier One is built exclusively for the bench. Knowing how I am and how much I like this FTR bipod, I can definitely see myself using this bipod for things it wasn’t intended for... Like hunting. lol I’m just really enjoying it.

Have a great Sunday.

Happy Birthday!!! You’ll love it, I’m pretty sure of that.

I was shooting the Red Wolf and Impact today. Using one of the air guns with the Accu Tac and then switching to the Tier One made it very evident how much better the Tier One is for bench shooting.

Pull the trigger for your birthday, you’ll be glad you did. Harry ships almost immediately and shipping only takes 4-5 days. I sent him a message after using this bipod for about a week because I wanted to tell him how impressed I was. He said he has knows of very few air gunners who use his FTR bipod. That’s when I told him I’d write a short review and hopefully help spread the word. He and I have messaged back and forth a few times, he seems like a great guy, the kind that does whatever necessary to make a great product and improve it whenever he can. He also seems like the type to take care of his customers if there is a problem or they need something.

Im rambling, sorry. I just love the bipod and have gotten a great vibe from Harry. He’s passionate about his products and it shows in their design and quality.

Have a great week.

Thanks again Kevin!

Birthday (68);…..isn’t until end of October, but thanks for the best wishes. All the information is very helpful and pretty sure I will be buying one of these.

I've got a Tier 1 that I use for my ARA rifle along with a mechanical rear rest. It works really well. Can you tell me how you mount it to. RAW HM1000X? I saw your comment above “you wouldn’t need the picatinny adapter for your RAW, it will work perfectly with the integrated T-Rail.” Do you have any pictures of that mounting set up?

I've got Tier 1’s Picatinny quick release but I am not a fan of how it operates. It doesn’t fit many picatinny rails very well only engaging the Picatinny rail angles by only a few thousands of an inch. Plus the lever doesn’t engage very easily and it’s a pain to adjust. AccuTac’s Picatinny quick release lever is far superior.

Having said all that I do like the stability and adjustability far more than AccuTac’s.

I don’t have the carbon version, it’s actually too wide for my needs and bench. I like long rails, the farther forward the bipod, the better. Ours have a T-Slot in them so we can use the adapter that came with it. I did cut a slot into the rear of the Anarchy Outdoors grip to make it easier to mount. It’s kind of torqued in there so it stays very tight and stable.

Have a good one. Stoti
