Thermal Imaging

There was a resent show on one of the hunting sports channels, where guys were using thermal units on iPhones to see coyotes, obviously not through glass. They also used a Fox LED spotlight to see the game, and then used their regular scope to do the shooting. I've tried that, but I never got its to work like I thought it should.

I use an ATN X-Sight II for night hunting, and nominally you don't need any thing but some ambient light. During the dark of the moon and/or no stars, an IR illuminator is required. I bring up the X-Sight, because the ATN Thor unit I have is nearly worthless for anything over about 30 yards (a bit too blotchy shall we say).

I wonder what's up with your Thor? This video was made with my entry level Thor HD (384 1.25-5) and is actually quite clear. At their closest, the dogs are just under 25 yards, and then the one wanders out past 50. I feel like pigs would be super easy to identify at 75 yards. I'd like to have better resolution and more magnification, but for less than 2k USD, I'm very happy.

Crap, just found out there is an app that is supposed to lay a reticle over the Therm-App Hz called Night-Owl. I'll have to mess with it and see if it's worth utilizing. I've been asleep at the wheel it seems and my expensive Therm-app sits in a closet getting zero use. Here is a video I was watching but have no sound available to me at the moment but in the comments he mentions the Owl.

Regardless, the Therm-App app records video in itself. I have the 19mm lens so that's a close quarter hunting optic if I so choose to set it up for such. They have a 35mm lens that'll get you out further. Using any type of scope or magnifier not specifically made of germanium will not work.

And one more thing, you have to take into consideration the refresh rate of the camera. Most Therm-Apps are 9hz which gives you wobble vision and won't work the best for recording pests that scurry around a lot. The Hz version is 25hz which is better. Obviously the price goes higher as you move up in options.

It's not IR passive but unless you are trying to hide from someone else who is IR passive it gets the job done for a lot less than $2k.

I have an X-Sight and a nice long range IR light source too. They're two totally different ways of seeing through darkness and both have their place. The X-Sight has the potential for identifying targets at longer ranges but can't begin to compare to the thermal for scanning. Ultimately I see myself spending money on a far more capable thermal for use on firearms, and using the Thor HD for short range pesting on an air rifle. Even though I could flip the Thor for very close to what I paid, I currently feel it has more value to me to just place it in another role.

I'd like to afford a Flir RS64 (≈$5,500), but I'd have to forego eating for a few months! I've looked through one, and yes I'm impressed. Unfortunately, the Thor by ATN can't come within a mile of the Flir. Having used both the Thor and the X-Sight, I'll stay with the X-Sight. I do own a Univivi IR illuminator, which helps tremendously on moonless nights.

And by the way.... I thought the X-Sight used batteries quickly, the Thor is much worse!
