In the last few years I've given the red squirrels in the yard a pass. That's about to change. While I like their boldness and audacity I have to thin down the numbers. Since I am lucky enough to pest at a dairy I forgave the Reds their minor nuisances. But today while glassing saw a red debarking, friggin debarking a young tree in my driveway. Its mouth was packed with bark (no pun intended). I started to glass up and down the tree and see quite a bit of damage.
I did some searching and found that they do this in times of drought or low water. But we have water sources nearby (bird bath), pond 1/4 mile away. Also it has been raining a lot here in NYS. They have plenty of food, lots of black walnut trees. So I can only surmise its for nesting? So going forward for a little while they are in mortal danger. The Bantam is going to pest at home for a spell.
