There will be blood... Red Squirrels on Notice!

In the last few years I've given the red squirrels in the yard a pass. That's about to change. While I like their boldness and audacity I have to thin down the numbers. Since I am lucky enough to pest at a dairy I forgave the Reds their minor nuisances. But today while glassing saw a red debarking, friggin debarking a young tree in my driveway. Its mouth was packed with bark (no pun intended). I started to glass up and down the tree and see quite a bit of damage.

I did some searching and found that they do this in times of drought or low water. But we have water sources nearby (bird bath), pond 1/4 mile away. Also it has been raining a lot here in NYS. They have plenty of food, lots of black walnut trees. So I can only surmise its for nesting? So going forward for a little while they are in mortal danger. The Bantam is going to pest at home for a spell.

I’m not far from you in upstate New York, just a few years ago I commented on this forum about how few red squirrels I was seeing as compared to my youth. Their numbers increased slightly in the one or two years following and after seeing a Fisher for the first time this winter and the grey squirrels all but disappearing the reds are definitely flourishing this summer. I haven’t targeted them yet but don’t doubt the day will soon come.

Thank you gentlemen for the replies. Of course now the little bastages will sense the change of mood and be wary. Critters can be funny that way, but nonetheless I'm now looking at them with malicious intent.

You've reminded me of a song. Can't remember the artist but it goes something like this:

Sitting on my rifle bench, sighting Red Squirrels with bad intent..........
