The Wait Begins

I ordered a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42 FFP late yesterday and now begins the wait until it arrives. It was a decision between it and a very lightweight March 1-8x24 FFP, and I decided to opt for the higher power but heavier NF. Right now the top of my X barreled Impact .30 is empty. I'm hoping that the NF is as perfect a scope for the Impact as it appears to be.

Hi Quoddy

From all I've heard the Nightforce in all it's various configurations is the "creame de la creame," the cat's meow, the 10,000 pound gorilla in the room as far as scopes go … but in looking over the link that you provided it says that the parallax is only adjustable down to 45 yards which might be a problem with close shots at various critters. The only other thing is that the scope tube is 34mm which says (I think) that you will need a special mount and rings for attachment. I could be wrong because I have never had a Nightforce scope but I don't think 30 mm rings would fit a 34mm tube without some measure of crushing on the tube and possibly end up messing with the adjustments of the scope.

The March 1-8x24 had a parallax down to 10 yards, but I seldom, if ever, use any of my guns below 50 yards. I originally sighted the Impact in at 75. I have a Nightforce extended cantilever 34mm mount coming with the ATACR. I used a similar type mount with my previous Vortex scope and found it was perfect on the rail.

That nightforce is a beautiful scope. In a different league entirely to the scopes most use on their airguns, and at a level where getting anything more is going to be at the well into the extremes of diminishing returns.

I think you're going to be blown away at how much it improves your shooting experience. Everything you do with an airgun is done peering through the scope - now you'll have the best view possible and believe me, it's amazing ?

Nice choice of mounts by the way. I wonder if Tier one makes Nightforce rings? They have an almost identical design.

Great choice!

I'm a sucker for good glass. My two best scopes are Vortex Viper PST 2 & Nightforce SHV. Wish I could trade my SHV for F1. All of my scopes (except SHV) are FFP now.

Do you ever use your Vortex or Nightforce at close ranges like 15-25 yards? I know they technically don't have a parallax adjustment down that low, but I've been wondering if they are usable (with decent clarity) at those short distances. I've been shopping around for a new FFP scope and I like the idea of buying something nice enough that I can keep for a long time, and move across platforms in the future. I know there's plenty of brands that cater more to the airgun world, but it would sure be sweet to get my hands on Vortex, Nightforce, Leupold, etc.
