The true cost of owning a PCP

To be fair, most of us could setup a decent rifle for $650 ready to shoot. My two favorite shooters are both in that range. If you have Ferrari taste, that's on you. There is also nothing wrong with buying a $1200+ if you can afford it and it it gives you years of pleasure. if you keep a gun 15 yrs, that would still average out to under $100 a year. Smoking cigarettes would cost $3650 a year if you took that up. 

I've been in several "cheap" hobbies and all of them cost many thousands once I was ready to compete at a mid-level.

I shot a Disco for several years, charging it with an FX hand pump. Then it happened: I bought a Condor, tuned the heck out of it and starting shooting more. Then I needed a tank, which ultimately meant I needed a compressor, then (probably from hanging out on airgun forums) I decided to get another PCP, then another..., then another...

Hey, the definition of "hobby" is a bottomless pit for spare time and money, and PCP satisfies that criteria extremely well!

buddy had a compressor he put it in my barn and me, him and his kid all use it to fill whenever needed. He doesn't shoot much and his kid lives right down the road

So for $1,000 or so, got a decent set-up Oh have about $20 in the Royal London Oil to finish the stock

Well I don't even want to know but my wife does & I get reminded about once a month LOL . It's not even close to my fishing gear but that took 40 yrs .

I already documented my fall down the AG hobby hole a couple of years ago.... It all started with a sub-$100 breakbarrel. Little did I know....

...how much fun this was going to be!!

I kind of envy you guys with only one or two guns , I am down to six and they are the best of the best, Due to my ham fisted attempt to tune one it broke, First time in 10 years that a gun failed and it was my fault . I sent it off to a super nice tuner in Texas did not cost an arm and leg and I got the gun back in a week wow fast, I sure missed that gun when it was gone, Why because it was one of my best,,, 

So we are talking money here and how many guns I own but unable to sell any due to me naring down to the best and missing one if I sold it.

so the true cost of the PCP world is if you are enjoying yourself and having fun, Money well spent, oh I enjoy shooting but also seeing what you guys are up to and the new doodads that we can buy for the guns

GOD I can relate.....this year I have purchased a Brocock Compatto Sniper XR, Impact Compact MKII and a Taipan Veteran Compact, plus scopes, air tank, pellets, new safe and soon the Impact is out the door and a Leshiy 2 takes it place. But I am done for at least a year...but purchase next year will probably be another Taipan but Long or Standard.

N that's without the mistakes or changes when you go from Springer's..to the hatsans or crall ..n them to the high price stuff..all that buying n selling at a lost..

Don't forget the other incidentals like mill, thread cutting lathe, tooling, inspection equipment....... on and on.....

Worth it to me, anyway....

Edit: I forgot about the house with room for a range and FT matches plus a shop to house the equipment and work in..... I enjoy it more than enough to be worth it.....

And then there are those of us with kids that love to shoot! I love shooting and fishing with my boys more than just about anything else. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have quality gear and so should they. Like Bob said, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

With that being said though...You can just multiply all of those costs by three, just to get started! Three premium air guns, three quality scopes, 3 sets of rings, 3 bipods, and BOOM, that’s over $8-9K right there! Not even factoring in all of the other little gadgets, doo-dads, parts and accessories for the guns that can up to thousands more. Oh, wait...Then we need to add up all the sources for air, hoses, fittings and air accessories. AND...We also need targets, reactive targets, gongs, KYL targets, bags, chronographs, shooting benches, wind flags, slings, target stands, shooting mats, tools, etc... IT NEVER ENDS!!!

My boys and I shoot our air guns a lot. Way more than our powder burners. I’m willing to spend a lot of money on these “tools” because they get used so frequently and we have a blast shooting together. What’s more important than that? It’s funny, I catch flak for having a Vortex Golden Eagle on an air gun. People will spend $1300 on a scope for a centerfire hunting rifle and laugh at me because I spent that much on a scope for an air gun. I’d rather put a high quality scope on an air gun that gets shot 3 times a week vs. a rifle that sits in the safe and gets used 3 times a year. We’re all different and are willing to spend differently. Nobody else’s business! You don’t need to spend a lot to enjoy this sport. Shoot what you got! I‘m not wealthy, I save money or sell something I don’t use much to fund future purchases...I’m running out of stuff to sell! LOL

It's not too bad if and when taking the time to price shop (should you choose to accept) and get stuff for half price. Just don't get scammed then all the savings won't be a wash.

I'm pretty shocked at how much I've spent so quickly, but am trying to cool it for a while. The problem is, I have more rifles than scopes, so ...

One rifle, one pistol, 2 scopes, 3 sets of rings, 1 red dot, 6 magazines, 2 bipods, 1 compressor, 1 carbon tank, 3 hard cases, 1 hand pump, steel targets, paper targets, folding "shooting" table, lots and lots of pellets and who knows what else at least $7500

I think you may have gotten suckered. I bought this and it will shoot 1/4 MOA out to 327 yards. I'm shooting until 2024 with one bag of high quality ammo and all in for less than 15 bucks, but who in their right mind adds up the dollars...that is just plain crazy!!! 

I've already taken 4 wolverines and 1 grizz with it and headed to Africa at the first of the year to take one of those buffalo they talk about.
