The sum of all fears, at a dairy!

Evening all and what a pesting adventure I have had. I decided to use this weekend to get content for my youtube channel and explore Central Washington for pesting opportunities.

The day started out with some exploring and trying to add to the list, I found a great location, lots of birds, but no one to speak too, just cows and the bald eagles nesting on the border of the property. So I headed back to the new permission from yesterday. The owners were very happy with my first efforts so I decided to continue keeping them happy.

I arrived around 10:00 am and decided to increase the FPE of the Katran CB shooting 25 cal Hades to 28 FPE 705 FPS. This seemed to increase accuracy and definitely gave more punch. Also, made some sparrows a bit light headed.

After I increased the FPS / FPE of the Katran I decided to try the GX CS 1 portable compressor I bought a few weeks ago in the field to charge the Katran, the thing worked like a charm. From 180 bar to 270 in around 4-5 minutes. The unit can use DC connections to the vehicle’s battery and it worked like it did at home on wall plug AC.

After I filled the Katran I did started wandering around the dairy and using the scope cam (which will come on my next youtube videos) and going after some all but collard dove invasives (owner said no to that 🤨 but his places his rules (foreshadowing). Okay, I have only had the little guy for a few weeks, but I believe for my immediate needs it fits the bill perfectly. I will do a full review on my channel in the next couple of weeks.

The dairy has around 3000 cattle and so decent size. I expected more birds for its size, but a couple who are air gunners hit the dairy hard earlier in the year, so things are a bit light especially on the pigeon side. however, plenty of sparrows to the point it is like a shooting gallery, and they are dumber than rocks. Photo compliments of sparky my drone.

As I explored the dairy wider this time I had plenty of opportunities to shoot sparrows, some starlings and a pigeon or two. I hit one pigeon, saw it tumble but couldn’t find it for the life of me as others 😫(more foreshadowing).

Well, I saw the owners’ “his and her” F150s show up (her had the fancier version go figure) so I popped into the office to say hello. After some chit chat, I now have access to 3 dairies with 9000 plus head of cattle. Too bad it is a 2 hour plus drive, but makes for a fun weekend trip. Also, donuts :)

I found a flock/horde of sparrows and started going to town it was like a turkey shoot (not sure what that is, but a good expression) and lost track at the numbers “maybe 20?” It was a very high sparrow day, in front of the innocence.

After I took a break to wash’s the Jeep (see in coming video) but here is a sampler. (Thank god it is a rental) That “mud” doesn’t smell like tulips.

After a lunch, a wash, and some suntan lotion I headed to the second dairy down the road. This place again similar size, but a lot more pigeons. Sum total was around 6 pigeons, no idea sparrows and a couple of starlings.

I retrieve all my kills to the best of my ability. Some times you can’t find them. Also, hunting at a dairy is far from glamorous, so you newbies remember, icky / yucky, is part of the game, you earn those birds, as I now have ptsd over.

Towards the end I retrieved my last kills, sparrows don’t count, of a starling and a pigeon in he DMZ (cow poop 💩 central). I retriever the birds wading through cows and their deposits then go to dispose of them, and found out solid is not solid and almost plummeted into the manure quick sand. If you don’t fear this well, you serious have some issues even the best therapist would be like, “Itch you crazy!” You rarely see this on the youtube glamour shots. 😂 I really need to get some disposable gloves or one of those stick thingies that @l.leon uses. Plus carry a spare set of clothing.

So to end, it was a great day, stinky and now after one weekend I have a foothold in Central Washington, and 4 dozen donuts later. 😁

Interesting learning about the real 'turkey shoots', but Blackpaw still used the phrase correctly in the vernacular.

" If someone refers to a battle or other conflict as a turkey shoot, they mean that one side is so much stronger or better armed than the other one that the weaker side has no chance of winning at all."

Whenever I hear the phrase I immediately think of The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot which occurred during the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

One slip & slide into "the muck of doom" and as @Blackpaw basically said, it'll put a person off of shooting at dairy farms. Then there's "pigeon poo from above" when barn shooting in confined areas, and rats...oh, don't forget the fun of stepping in or leaning on rat nests (they can get real, real mean, by the way). And of course there's lots of stuff to hurt oneself on when recoiling from the surprise snakes...snakes love eating mice. And mean feral barn cats. And horses that bite for fun. Cows that pin you against stuff. Chicken holes in the yard. Bees and hornets. Biting flies. Jack the guard dog. Dairy farms can be an adventure...

How do you like the Katran .25? I have a .22 and it's a really affordable tack-driver. With Hades it makes small pest birds go "pop" and shed feathers (lots of fun!). I have some pellets H&N sent that look like even more fun...
