...The State of Oregon ... Elk hunting ... HaHa + gripe + I will learn it all

Below is the Oregon hunting regulations graphic to "help" identify a spike elk in Oregon. I am new to this elk hunting business and it seems a guy needs an attorney to figure out the regulations. I will

If a guy screws up, shoots a spike elk with too much on an antler or kills BullWinkle, they can take your gun, car, all the camping equipment, fine you HEAVILY, and take away your hunting + fishing rights.

I am super careful and will research it hard. "full-time elk, part-time hunter" is already difficult. I want that elk in my belly.

Is Oregon allowing airguns for elk?

I don't see Oregons definition of a spike. It looks like they don't count the brow tine and you only need it to be a spike on one side. Around here, anything with a brow is likely to have two brow tines on a side. It looks like Oregon would only count one of them.

"Spike Elk Bag Limit" looks like someone will/could argue that means three spikes is the bag limit. You're game department appears as inadequate as ours.

Nope on airguns but I know there are game hunters here and thought I'd share, since it's elk rifle season here momentarily.

Hard to figure out on paper and when in the field even more difficult. Gotta be VERY careful.

At least you got lucky enough too draw a tag . What unit ?

General season. Western or Eastern, undecided.

Western would be Trask unit.

Eastern would be Heppner unit or closer to it.

Choices:
1. soaking wet and cold (Western)
2. freezing and dry (Eastern)

I'll be "camping" under a canopy in a 2021 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, generator, electric heater and not quite enough rifle to 'reach out' unless I get another PB.

Marlin 30/30 should do the trick under a 100yards.

Mike my brother and nephew hunted the archery season in the Heppner this year and last year . They seen a lot of bulls but could not get a shot . Also one hell of a lot of people ! It is a popular place so rifle season will be worst . The Trask is a very good unit also , with a good kill percentage . Your a little under gunned for elk , but have seen it done with a 30-30 , my self I would do a head or neck shot if possible . I use a Rem. 7mm mag. and have hunted both sides of the state when I lived their . I prefer the dry side lol . Good luck with your choice and let us know the outcome . BTW Washington is just bad with their regulations , you need to be a lawyer to figure them out and the fishing regs. are worst. Have fun & good luck .

Thanks for sharing your experience / knowledge here in Oregon! The dry side is where I'll likely go as well because it's easier to stay warm in the snow and cold, for me.

30 years of salmon fishing the NW Oregon rivers has given me some good common sense, for sure. Been waterlogged, freezing and hands won't work, terrible and won't let that happen again.

I want meat but I also want it to FUNNNNNNNN and I know how to do that. Can't REALLY justify a rifle purchase since I spend all of my time shooting air rifles.

Air Rifles = daily fun
Powder Burners = unoccassional fun
