The slug wagon, I am staying off. Why?

For now I am all ears and read all the great things on the slugs, BUT, I am staying off the wagon for now, I am just going to stick with pellets,

When H&N and JSB starts making and putting the slugs on the market , Then I will slide over and try the new slugs, I know H&N is gearing up to bring the new slugs of a lot of different calibers to the market,

I do think it will be a while before we see them, and able to buy them.

I do hope they come in tins of 500 or so at a affordable price range.

I agree to a point, I don’t know about “bandwagons” but many air gunners have their reasons for trying/shooting slugs. I don’t believe they are going to supplant pellets anytime soon. For my uses pellets work well, for the next guy, maybe not so much? They have different needs. What attracted me to airguns is the lower power, the ability to shoot near structures and equipment. To shoot where I couldn’t shoot before. That said, variety is the spice of life.

For me, I only shoot jsb pellets. And they will hit anything I want up to 100 yard and past if needed to. So why switch to slug when they are expensive. You paid for the same price and get 500 pellet per tin, or do you want to spend the same price and get only 50 slugs..nuff said. I know those Africa guys on YouTube are saying slug all the way. But if pellets can hit same distance, why bother spending more. Don't matter if slug or pellet. When you put that lead into a animal, they will drop.

H&N is already way ahead of the game as they have been making powder burner bullets for years. And my understanding is they will be using that same equipment to make airgun slugs. But if your waiting because of the cost of what's offered now and made right here in the United States you might be missing the boat! The learning curve is now and if H&N brings a good product at a good price that's just a bonus down the road as far as I'm concerned.

Having the right gun and right power levels is main thing and it's not going to be for everyone but I'm having a blast as a hunter slinging some hollow point slugs down range!

When producings slugs its no all about saving money its more like a ritual

You make a projectile for a specific event what should bring about a certain effect in the target( penetrating...mushrooming..knockdown..or some combination from whatever)

You can not congure with massproduction but that is not sensible

Some buy the catched fish and some prepare a hook to catch it

I have been using pcp slugs for a decade and I love them I always did , but the have their place as with me I alo of times dont want ammo to go too far due to residentual areas , So I will always use both , as far a regulations , my current state is ,22 PCP only , or ,22 long rifle to hunt .but not a .25 cal even sub 12 fpe , the laws here stink , I think they should have hunting for both mall and large game . LOU

I like swaging my own slugs for .25 cal. for a few reasons.

You can "dial in" that perfect weight and base for a given gun.

Accuracy can be superior over pellets. If slug to barrel fit and a few other things are right.

Hollow Point expansion on pests can be far more effective than a dome.

Since I don't shoot inside 100 yards that much. Boring! At 100- 200 yards slugs bring it for me.

I do still need my H&N Barracuda Hunters for shooting up into trees at Starlings though.

Mike - I remember you telling me that your shooting area is to short to need a Cricket .25 cal.

So that makes sense that there would be no great advantage for you to want to shoot slugs.

My wagon ride is 3 years and going..............

long-shot

I do venture off my place sometimes, Just came back from horse head crossing on the Pecos river,

No wind at all and able to shoot any distance , Everything must have been right as this was the first time I have been able to watch my pellets in the air at 114 yards,

To me it was just beyond cool, I was shooting my Veteran 25 at 887 fps with JSB 25 gr pellets .

I have never seen any of my PCP pellets in flight before, It was down right cool,

Mike

The only bad news i see with all these upgrades to air rifles (power and slugs) is regulations.

Agreed.

Airguns are already regulated... you can’t just shoot them anywhere. No caliber distinction as to where you can or cannot shoot legally that I know of.

Some places limit the caliber to .177, etc... Some allow hunting, some do not, etc.

I am with those concerned with coming restrictions and laws pertaining to PCP air powered weapons. The use and development of slugs is detrimental and unnecessary. If increased range and accuracy is required, please use PBs. They are designed for those requirements complete with adequate controls. Air weapons are designed for short distances and poor BCs are an advantage. Targets beyond 100 meters should be discouraged. Ignoring this will absolutely result in increasing controls, restrictions, costs and availability of this hobby. It is an unfortunate fact that stupid people are everywhere. Please do not encourage irresponsible behavior. The use and development of slugs is bad for the hobby.

Some of the arguments for limiting Second Ammendent freedoms were undoubtedly voiced in the same way when the Minie Ball was invented, that being, we must limit ourselves or we invite regulation by the state. Make no mistake, anti-gunners don't know and don't care about the difference between pellets and slugs! The only thing they know is it is one of those "evil guns". Our only hope of preserving our Second Ammendent rights is to form a strong union with firearms owners and fight to preserve our freedoms.

At this moment in time, the most powerful friend gun owner's have is the National Rifle Association. Join and support it, your freedoms depend on it!
