The Orion high capacity mag

Hey, all. Some of you have heard or seen the new high capacity mags that Orion put out recently on another post, and on that same post I made mention that I had one on hand to test, and here is my post on it.

ive been shooting my impact a lot lately, and one of the things I’ve noticed with the factory mags is depending on which Ammo you use(I only shoot pellets) the inner core can hang up, and cause a dry fire. Not all the time, but enough to make me wonder if one got loaded or not each and every time I cycle the cocking handle. I’ve tried giving the magazine more spring tension, but it still gets hung up.

one of the other things I’ve noticed when shooting the 30 cal 44.75 pellets is my groups are stellar starting off with a full mag, snd once I’m down to around 8-10 shots left in the mag I notice my groups open up. It’s as if the spring tension now overcomes the lighter weight of the pellets left combined, and just shoved the pellet head hard to one side of the mags porthole into the breech.

out of both sheer frustration and just wanting to experiment, I resorted to the Huma single loaders which by the way work really well, but due to the loss of feeling between my thumb and first two fingers of my dominant hand, I found that more pellets fell onto the shooting table than going into the single loader, as I have trouble feeling the pellets going into the single loader hole.

So this past couple of weeks I’ve used the Orion mag in 30 caliber exclusively, both in my impact and a friends, and right away I noticed two things-

1. No more dry fires from mag hang up

2. no fliers from the mag being 2/3 empty. Fliers would only come about from my own shooting mistakes.

So let’s take a look see-

In the pic showing close up of the pellets inside, these are the Hatsan strikes that I use on occasion for initial chronograph tune testing and initially getting close to the bulls when target shooting. The skirts are longer than the jsb 44.75’s. The strike pellets for sure hang up against the clear plastic cover of the factory mags. Looking close you see ample gap from the edge of skirt to the top edge of the mag.

if any of you have the Elis5173 speed loafers and love the magnetized lids, you’ll like the lids on the Orion mags. I basically toss the lid on top of the mag and since the magnets are set up to only magnetize onto certain ones(there’s a name for that, I know, lol) the lid just affixes itself and snaps shut. The mag fits into the mag well nice and tight, and when I say tight, it slips in easily but there’s no wiggle on the mag when it’s in place. It pops in and out just like the factory mags and removes by toggling the mag release tab.

in the pics above I show the shorter JSB Haydes. Lots more space from edge of skirt to top edge of mag. Orion also labels the mags for caliber, I just outlined it myself with a silver sharpie to see it faster, as I have all my impact high capacity mags and Elis speed loaders all stuffed together in a zip pouch.

so if you’re in need for more mags give these a try. At half the price of a standard factory mag, it’s good to go for both slug and pellets. Don’t quote me, but I believe these can be had in different colors, too. I give these Orion mags a big thumbs up on this design. I can tell a lot of design thought went into this, and i for one appreciate detailed designs.

It’s a good feeling knowing the worries of mag hang ups are all gone, and any fliers out of my groups are all my own fault, ha ha. Great job, Orion! 😃👍👏

I'm fixing an issue with the .30 cal and Hybrids. Fix should be done by next week.

Just wanted to say that any issue you might have, I'll get your back. I'll either fix it or give you a full refund if you are not happy with any of my products not just the magazine.

@bigragu I'm glad you are getting a good experience with it.

I just got 2 of your .30 mags. I also planned on using hybrids. What is the issue exactly so I can keep an eye out for it!

The Hybrids are too tall, so the lid is not going to close well. Send me an email to [email protected] to send you the fix when ready

I just checked side by side a factory mag main body(not including the lids)against the Orion mags(also not including lid) and the Orion mag is taller(30 cal mag comparison).

Not too long ago I was using a factory mag with an Orion center core insert shooting 30 cal fx hybrid slugs and that cycled no problem with not one miss. So common sense tells me the fx hybrid slugs will work easily on the Orion mags.

@ MADEINTHEUK- all the shooting done on your impact was with the Orion mag exclusively so you’re going to appreciate using them with your new impact! In fact, the pics I show of the Haydes in the tray are right before using them on your gun, lol

I thought the gun in the background looked familiar. Lol

Dis you test them with hybrids? I know you had said you were going to try some. I’m interested in the results!

I think the factory mag has a cut out on the lid and that might give additional room. I'm getting those Hybrids in .30 cal tomorrow, so I'll test them and if there's an issue I'll work on a fix, I think I'll go and do the same cut out on the lid and then I just have to replace the lid, I think the body should be fine

@ MADEINTHEUK- no not yet. Today I had to put together a present I got for my two nephews to not only see if it all worked, but to plan the surprise so when they wake up on Xmas day they got this to surprise them-

I think I made a mistake by buying them two sets of this same slot car kit, thinking I could blend the two kits together to make one neat set up, but this in pic is one kit! For some reason I don’t remember slot car kits being this large as a kid, ha ha!

Orion, I’ll post up a pic of your mag filled with the 30 cal hybrids in a couple of hours on this thread ok. Then I’ll insert a probe and push each one out one by one to see if there’s a cycling issue.
I plan on shooting a few thru MADEINTHEUK’s gun but that more than likely won’t be till after Christmas

Slot cars are a whole rabbit hole to go down man! Until recently we had a shop in downtown Vallejo Ca that had a huge race track and people would have the most intense races ever. What's cool is that winning or losing the race is a testament to how good or bad your engineering skills are. I love that. I never won.....ever. All the guys there were over 60 years old and been in the hobby for several decades. Their engineering/ racing skill surpassed my own by a wide Martine. What a fun hobby. At any rate looks like Orion is an awesome business. If I ever get an FX I'll be purchasing some mags from them no doubt.

Got the track all done today, ready to take over to my Niece’s house on Christmas Eve night when her boys are asleep, so when they get up it’s ready to feel the need for speed, ha ha!!

I bolted up 5/8” plywood to two saw horses, trimmed around the plywood with a raised edge so the cars stay within the platform if the car “spins out”, and because they’re boys being boys, I hot glued the track and the second tier supports onto the plywood to minimize broken parts and pieces, right?

I figure if they want to add greenery, audience stands and misc. decor to it it’ll give their dad something to do, lol

Finally got around to testing the Orion mag in 22 caliber yesterday, using the 22 caliber JSB monster redesigns in 25.38g. Went thru three whole mags while testing my impact in 22 and not one misfeed, jam, nothing. I also used a sideshot and at one time my hand accidentally hit the mag with the cocking handle back and the mag fell out of the mag slot. Thought that was weird as I did not touch the mag release tab.

These mags are easily stacked upon each other as there is no half moon dial lock protruding out the side. Kind of a cool deal for storage or just keeping your shooting bench organized.

Another feature I like and I don’t know if it’s because of the materials used is the much snugger fit up into the mag slot. There is no wiggle at all once that click is heard on the mag release tab locking into the magazines indent.

Overall I give Orion’s mags a big thumbs up for anyone wanting spare mags or needing a new mag and not wanting to pay close to $80+ retail price
