The must have Impact upgrade for $30

I'm overwhelmed with excitement! I was on the kraford and lypt web site last week looking to out fit my Impact with a new trigger guard when I saw the new "Safety lever". Holly cow finally, I thought to myself. One thing that I've never enjoyed about my Impacts. There's a repair. I found myself ordering it right then. WOW! No more safety rubbing on my trigger finger. I've never figured why it had to hang down in the trigger opening when on fire. I've always thought Fx completely got it backwards. Fact, the only reason I don't own a Crown today is because of the safety switch being placed where I found it uncomfortable.

It took about 5 minutes to in stall the new safety switch.

All you have to to do is remove the 2 taper Allen screws that hold the side plate on the left hand side of the trigger block. Using a 2mm wrench

There's one small tapered head Allen screw holding the safety switch in. Remove it using a 2mm wrench. Be careful not to loose the small detent ball and spring when you remove the screw.

Next push the safety out to the other side. Then install the new safety switch.

Replace the detent ball and spring, I placed the ball in first then push the spring with a small Allen key

Replace tapered Allen screw with a snug tight fit, check the safety movement at this point to make sure it moves freely. Adjust the screw as need to get the tension you like. If it should bind check to mak sure you've installed the safety lever correct, its possible to install it 180 degrees out. Causing it to bind.

When you have it in and working. install the cover plate.

Congratulations you've completed it.

For those with some kind of sickness it is a must have for sure. ;^) I don't know how you got along without it for this long. $30 is a cheap price to pay to feed the addiction for a few days. Better hurry before they run out of your favorite color. I just checked and it really does hit on my finger as well I don't know why Evil FX did that to us. My poor trigger finger it complains near every shot now even though I never noticed it before. Grrr there goes another $30 for a tiny piece of nicely machined aluminum. ;^) Oh, how rough it is living in the first world.

Nice tutorial forsure Mont, love the gold and black theme!

...I've never figured why it had to hang down in the trigger opening when on fire. I've always thought Fx completely got it backwards...

They DID get it backwards because the safety selector is supposed to be on the thumb side for right hand shooters, as it is on the AR platforms it was modeled after. This allows the shooter to easily manipulate the selector without having to change grip or come off target, and would have naturally kept it out of the way of your trigger finger.

I can't fathom how someone's finger would be rubbing against the safety. Here are pics of my finger in safe and fire positions.

If you don't use the very tip of your finger on the trigger or have a shorter finger it hits on the safety and is quite uncomfortable. Some of our fingers don't bend as nicely as we would like, old age and arthritis play their part. Myself I have nasty scar on my trigger finger tip, nice deep slice with a hacksaw, so it is very uncomfortable to use my finger tip on the trigger. This is the perfect mod for me. As much as I would like to say it is just jewelry it is actually a very nicely done and very usable product for some of us. Maybe not for you but for some of us. For those like you who don't really need it it is a nice piece of bling/jewelry for the addiction and for the gun. For those who have everything this is a needed piece and your gun is not complete until you have it installed. ;^)

Now an uninformed question from someone who doesn't own an Impact at this time. How big a modification would it be to extend the safety through and would it come through at the screw point illustrated. Could an ambidextrous safety lever be made or is that not possible due to internal parts positioning?

The safety has a milled out place to be on the right side of the gun. If brought out through the left it would come out through the trigger plate, that covers the screw and trigger components, and would protrude quite a ways out as there is no place milled for it to be. Could it possibly be done yes, with a bit of extra werq.
