The Crosman Powermaster 760...Recapturing my youth !

Picked this up on Ebay. I believe it's from around 1967-68. The same time my parents bought me a Crosman 760 for Christmas. Gun is in pretty good shape. Stock was refreshed which is kind of a bummer. Almost rust free and was totally restored internally. Downloaded the original user manual that states up to 10 pumps. At 10 pumps, the manual stated 85% of the guns power potential would be achieved. I read in some other airgun discussion forum that the gun could be pumped up to 20 times. My manual says that minimal gains are achieved by over pumping the gun. I shot it 5 times over my chrony today with BB's. Four times at 10 pumps for an average of 605fps. Low of 600 and a high of 609. Shot one shot with 5 pumps and got 492fps. What can all you knowledgeable AGN geeks tell me about this rifle ? There is no serial number on the reciever.

That’s a very clean-looking example of the first variant. Made from ‘66-70.

The refinish was not poorly done. I wouldn’t get too obsessed with high power and BBs. It’s a good bet that best accuracy with BBs will be with a light charge, say 3-5 pumps.

I have a couple of later, self-cocking models and usually shoot pellets with 6-10 pumps. These guns were never designed to be powerhouses.

Good looking gun!

Thanks ! I think it was a good buy for $89.50. Did some more chrony testing. When you pump and shoot your velocity is greater than pumping and waiting for the air charge to cool. Pumped it 10 times and let it sit for 5 minutes. Got 594fps. Then started to shoot a string of consecutive shots and the power seems to be improving. The guy who rebuilt it got the parts from JG Airguns LLC. His grandfather gave him the gun and he has only fired it a dozen times since it's rebuild in January 2019. Anyway, shot it immediately after 10 pumps and got a 628fps. I think the guns internals were warmed up from the other shots. Had a 3 pump shot hit 400fps. Now getting 5 pump shots just over 500fps. Weather is 63 deg and 60% humidity. I remember mine back in 67-68 being quite accurate with BB's out to 20-25yrs.

Another thing I would like to know regarding the 760. Benjamin recommends leaving the gun with a single pump stroke for storage. I guess it keeps the valves seated properly to prevent leaks. I think Sheridan pump guns have the same recommendations. Not sure if I need to do this with the Crosman 760. Any input would be awesome !

Just popped another 10 pump shot over the chrony after letting the gun sit for a half hour. 624fps. Guns performance is definitely improving. :)

I saw that one on the eBay auctions. I'd already had several bid on, so I stuck with what I had. Nice one though. I'd shoot pellets rather than BB's in it. Especially with the later or fancier models. Like the 760XL & 761XL that have a rifled barrel. BB's are very hard on rifling. Bes8ides, pellets hit harder and shoot a bit straighter. You'll find the build date on the front of the barrel band end cap. 2-3 numbers for month and year. Mine read, " 60" on it, which is Crosman's code for 6/70, or June 1970. They didn't get serial numbers until after July 1975. And the barrels from the 761XL that are rifled are a direct fit to the 70's 760's.

The wood used is light colored, with grain structure like maple to me. Minwax oil stain #224, Special Walnut, matches it very closely. Here's my 760 Powermaster variant one after I restomodded it;

It has some 3-4 coats of Tru-Oil over that. The stain on the forestock is original, save for a clean-up and 1 coat of Tru-Oil. All steel has been stripped, polished and reblued, including screws. Mac1 seal/piston upgrade kit, NOS 761XL barrel, MOE 2.5" picatinny rails custom mounted to mount the Simmons 4x32 scope on Hawke low-rise match rings. It shoots a bit better than before, but not by much. Still good enough to hunt rabbits and pesting.

The tone of the butt stock color is like peekaboo painting. It gets lighter or darker depending on viewing angle. I won many 760's on eBay auctions. Like this VGC 760-25 25th commemorative rifle in excellent condition for 25-30 bucks.

And this 761XL that's in need of a seal kit, but otherwise in restorable condition;

So that's 10 760's I have, including one 760-derived 66AB Powermaster

Nice collection you have there. I will take a look at my on Wednesday and see when it was built. Seller said it was 1968. Pretty sure mine is a smooth bore model. Tried some accuracy tests with BB's and it's not what I remember as a kid. Of course 62 year old eyes don't compare with the 10 year old eyes. I can't even use open sights that well anymore.

Thanks. I have a lot more to show out of the 10 I currently have. Among others. Here's another shot of the butt stock on the 760v1 that shows up a little darker;

And the 66AB Powermaster. Only needed a small handful of NOS parts from Mike Baker at; [email protected];

Hi all, I am new but have lurked for some time. I still have my 760 in the attic. A friend's brother trashed it in 77 and got it, cleaned it up and got another year out of it before the seals failed. This motivates me to break it down and rebuild it. I am not sure of the year though. It has a wooden forend with a solid plastic stock. I will pull it out tonight and if I can not detirmine the date of manufacture will posts pics.

Hi Folks. I have a version 3. This is confirmed. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get one of those rifled barrels from a 761XL for it? Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Now a little bragging ;) ....Just rebuilt mine for the 2nd time in the 28 years since my grandfather gave it to me. 671 fps average over 12 shots. I pumped it 13 times. I pump this many times because I did a small mod to it. I removed the 1/2" long aluminum slug from the valve and replaced it with a spring twice the length of the original. This gave me more volume but it took more pumps to compress it to the normal pressure. I have no (shooting) pressure built up until the 3rd pump hence 13 pumps and occasionally 1 or 2 more. It is very accurate at 112 feet using a scope. I bagged a 21 lb. wild tom a month ago at that approx. distance... shot it through the head.

I'm thinking it would be more accurate at an even greater range with that 761XL barrel on it, that is if I could find one. Oh well, here's hoping.

Bye for now,

Biznawich

P.S.- I live in New Mexico at approx. 5400 ft. alt.. No humidity most of the time just thin, cool, very dry air...this likely helps my old timers performance. It certainly helps mine and I'm over sixty. ;)

Look at the manual for the version of the rifle that has a rifled barrel. I'm pretty sure it gave the rate of twist? And I'd found two NOS 761XL barrels that a friend who repairs Crosman, Benjamin and others who bought out some inventory. A Cali shop owner died and he bought everything off Craig's list. He had two, so me and another Facebook group member scarfed them up. And I'd been searching everyday for 3 months a couple years ago!
