For more suggestions on coyote hunting, check out predatormastersforums.com. No love for coyotes there but a lot of respect for their ability to survive.
An electronic caller simulates the various sounds of many animals, including coyotes, owls, rabbits, squirrels, hawks, mice, ducks, geese, etc. Very useful in attracting the animal or bird you want.
Coyotes are extremely smart and very good at avoiding humans. And they're way faster than you'd expect. They can smell humans easily so always stay downwind. And they like sardines, anchovies, tuna, etc. You can find plenty of ideas at the above website too.
Never, ever shoot to not have a clean kill. Especially with a coyote. They're already extremely tenacious and durable. I've seen an old coyote that occasionally comes near my house. Only has three legs but he's a survivor! I doubt that he's had any veterinary care so he lost it in a fight or a trap. Yet he's still hunting solo and not starving so he makes a statement as being a survivor.
As for making a safe yard, forget it. Unless you want an 8' cyclone fence, also with 2 more feet of fencing underground, it won't happen. We have a couple basset hounds, got them as puppies. When taking outside at 5:30AM, one got out of my brother's sight for just a few seconds. A juvenile coyote attacked the 16 week old puppy. Only 10 seconds but nearly $1,000 in vet bills. He survived but since then, whenever the dogs are outside, they get a close human escort. Not really worried because they're nearly 60 lbs. each and play-wrestle like linebackers. At night, my .45 HK USP with light and laser join me. And my mega-lumen Fenix TK-75 makes nighttime into day too. Weapon-grade lighting! Funny, now I only see the coyotes on our security cameras at night, and extremely rarely near the house structure, usually on the street or driveway. There are a lot of night hunting ideas and techniques at the website above too.
Best of luck with Titus. Remember that coyotes are very sophisticated hunters. One coyote will often engage the prey so the prey will chase the single coyote, except that 'yote is racing right back to a pack of coyotes that will quickly overwhelm the prey. No, not very fair but hey, it's dinner for them. They do what they have to do to stay alive.
