The Coyotes are infiltrating and I need to take action

For more suggestions on coyote hunting, check out predatormastersforums.comNo love for coyotes there but a lot of respect for their ability to survive.

An electronic caller simulates the various sounds of many animals, including coyotes, owls, rabbits, squirrels, hawks, mice, ducks, geese, etc. Very useful in attracting the animal or bird you want.

Coyotes are extremely smart and very good at avoiding humans. And they're way faster than you'd expect. They can smell humans easily so always stay downwind. And they like sardines, anchovies, tuna, etc. You can find plenty of ideas at the above website too.

Never, ever shoot to not have a clean kill. Especially with a coyote. They're already extremely tenacious and durable. I've seen an old coyote that occasionally comes near my house. Only has three legs but he's a survivor! I doubt that he's had any veterinary care so he lost it in a fight or a trap. Yet he's still hunting solo and not starving so he makes a statement as being a survivor.

As for making a safe yard, forget it. Unless you want an 8' cyclone fence, also with 2 more feet of fencing underground, it won't happen. We have a couple basset hounds, got them as puppies. When taking outside at 5:30AM, one got out of my brother's sight for just a few seconds. A juvenile coyote attacked the 16 week old puppy. Only 10 seconds but nearly $1,000 in vet bills. He survived but since then, whenever the dogs are outside, they get a close human escort. Not really worried because they're nearly 60 lbs. each and play-wrestle like linebackers. At night, my .45 HK USP with light and laser join me. And my mega-lumen Fenix TK-75 makes nighttime into day too. Weapon-grade lighting! Funny, now I only see the coyotes on our security cameras at night, and extremely rarely near the house structure, usually on the street or driveway. There are a lot of night hunting ideas and techniques at the website above too.

Best of luck with Titus. Remember that coyotes are very sophisticated hunters. One coyote will often engage the prey so the prey will chase the single coyote, except that 'yote is racing right back to a pack of coyotes that will quickly overwhelm the prey. No, not very fair but hey, it's dinner for them. They do what they have to do to stay alive.

You need to have a squeak bulb on you, the ones found inside of squeak toys. When those yotes get close and you want to hold them on your x hairs, pop that squeaker with the hand holding the forestock of your gun. They are going to look up wondering what that was, giving you that extra second for a head shot.

Titus must have some old squeak tipoys laying around. Pull the bulb off of one of those

Going outside is not futile. What do you do when shooting a powder burner.....you have to be outside.

How you go about it is whats important. Being as invisible as you can, to the eye and the ear, is key here. Even at night. Coyotes can run through dense woods and not make a sound, their night vision is very good.

If they come in every night but not when you're there, it's because they know you're there and likely because they saw you....in my experience.

Not futile for a real hunter with great skills and that is willing to patient using a powder burner. But with an air rifle where is is best to keep the range short, like < 75 yards. It would be a real challenge to get close enough for a clean shot. I'm assuming the main goal is to remove the threat to Titus and others from a pack of coyotes. Much easier to bait with an alarm to remove the threat. This is pesting not hunting.

Update , I didnt go out for a few days , but last nite we had 1 inch of snow and I went out for walk in rain before snow got too wet , well I saw where every coyote came from , I have a neighbor 3 doors down he raises sheep , rabbits , chickens , I see from his property I see 1 trail coming onto my property , and once they hit the field my house and neighbors they branch into 3 groups one goes around pond and others go into brush and into garden , and others roam field and then they go back same way When I climbed the trail they came from , it snowed only a few hous about midnight and I believe I see a dozen or so tracks , I also spotted some rabbit tracks and fox , though I see no rabbits . and I saw no deer tracks .which is unusual they usually here at nights , Maybe the coyotes scare them off?

Can I ask why you don't want (or can't ) use a firearm ? I assume it's neighbors. If the nearest house isn't that close ever thought of a .22cal rimfire with a 24" barrel? A bolt action .22 able to use shorts might be the ticket. At 1125 fps (hi velocity rounds) and a 29 gr. bullet lung or head shots will do the beasts in. That round generates 80 FPE and the sound is nothing like a 22 Long Rifle round. Even match grade 22 LR still have that distinctive CRACK when fired. I use to use shorts all the time for hunting because of the huge sound reduction. Just a thought.

Id love to use a 22-250 or a 6.5 creedmoor but cant due to it is not safe they travel too far . I am legal to shoot in my yard with pcp guns , I got 3 acre of land and I have some woods , It is legal to shoot here 500 feet from buildings

I did not get out for a few days it is soo cold and my body hurts I got some medal rods in back I cant be out in this cold ,

Coyotes are smart, very smart. .. I tried to hunt them and I put out sardines for them and they would not touch it.. I put out dog food, same thing.. I put out winnies and they did eat them.. They know when you are after them and can smell 3 times better than a deer.

They can see, red light and green light. And they they see my infrared light on my Bushnell trail camera when it goes off.

I "heard" cut up sponges soaked in bacon grease does a number on them....never done it and not suggesting it..

The only thing keeping me from shooting one with an air rifle is I don't have one powerful enough.

My first coyote on private property with my powder burner was 50yds. If I had an air rifle then I would have had him with that.

I have family members with coyotes in their yards, but again I need a more powerful air rifle. Same with one farmer who has them coming on his back deck.

Like I said, what about a scoped bolt action .22 rimfire with high velocity short rounds ?

Hi Gold My R5 30 will do more damage then a 22 short and it is quieter as well , I would rather use a 22m but the law prevents me from using this or bigger , where I live airguns or 22lr ,or 17hmr and I got rid of my 17hmr because the pcps are more powerful and accurate for me .

The coyotes came at 4 am to 5 am this morning , we were out for them from 11 till 3 am , we only saw racoons and possums , this is this mornings footage they changed times or like others said they knew we were there

Dang,, that is a lot of Starlings..

Coyotes: if u can put up a driveway sensor / motion sensor.. to alert u..that way you will not have to sit for fruitless hours.. if alerted, then must be completely hidden ( no lights, no motion, no scent)

Try and get a "meat bone" from butcher and "wire it" / fasten it to one of those fence posts.. that way they will have to work a bit to get to the food. Also, if u find a road kill squirrel grab it from the road and put it out for the yotes..

Good luck, they are intelligent... keen and are survivors.

Yes I got the sensors in mail today 2 of them , I had to order rechargeable batteries for them so I will put them out in a few days ,when batteries arrive , I been out for 2 nites and it was -5 last nite I came in for tea now it is 11 15 and I as out since 9pm . saw many raccoons and possums , I didnt take them out , I want them coyotes gone , I was thinking of getting one of them ground blinds and heating it so I can stay out longer will this scare them off , now they came at 5 am so I had them from 9 pm to 6 am every nite and missed them by 30 min each time .

I do believe they must smell me or see me , I am not smoking I am scanning fields with a NV scope with IR=850 .

I am seriously starting to think they see me no matter where I am by the IR -850 or the Digital NV , both emit a slight red glow ,

BOB is this why you use the Thermal hand held ???? is this because they see the ir-850 you are using ????? Which model can see out to 200 yards ???

ANY Other Ideas why should I have shot a raccoon or possum and seen if then went to get them ???? or bad idea ?

Will a Thermal scope work better ???????????

I put in like 20 hrs of time so far and they came every nite some twice

I have a similar problem at my house. Coyote killed the neighbors dog right next to their house. They were hitting the apple orchard on my property every night based on the coyote scat. I got off one shot with my 20g shotgun, face was in center of the bead at 30 yards. I haven't seen one since but I know they are still in the area based on the calls we hear. Our two small dogs get close cover support every time we go outside now. No more roaming for them. New home construction about 2 miles from our house is a probable cause, clearing an abandoned 18 hole golf course has eliminated a lot of habitat. The 5 apple trees are now a large burn pile, no more easy meals here.

I'm subscribing to get ideas. I live in a suburban area and have a 1/2 acre lot. I have two 9 pound dogs and I am starting to see coyotes come through. I too am worried about my dogs. We have an "invisible" fence so my little guys go out unsupervised. I have a 30 caliber Crown so I believe I have the power. Shots will be about 45 yard to where they go through my yard. Looks like I need to get the HF alarm and do some baiting and/or get a caller. I guess I need some kind of night vision device also. Any recommendations on this?

Update I got my batteries for driveway motion detectors and I painted them camo color and placed one about 150 yards and other like 40 yards from where I see them in garden , we adjusted them t ick up stuff near ground , I was inside about 5pm it ent off I grabbed the R5 and I saw a Black chicken with a red head ,, I let him go on his way as it must of been some neighbors as we dont have wild chickens ,

Then all was quiet , I went to bed early like 1030 pm . 1130 both went off , I threw on my slippers and went out on deck and I saw the Leader the black tipped tail one , he trotted tards neighbors house , I went back in to sleep at midnight one went off I went out , I saw one huge one he had part of a rabbit in his mouth , I Knew now it was 1230 am and wanted to take shot but did not want him to yelp I had hear or body shot , I took head shot between eyes , he went 20 yards , I came in went to bed , I didnt want to go out during nite as there is packs of them ,

I went out this am to get pictures with Titus and skin him to make titus a bed with his enemy and ,he was gone , hair everywhere ,like as if I plucked his hair out no body no bones ????????????????

I took nite vision unit off of R5 and no SD card ugg , I have no footage , I am going to retrieve my game cams to seewhat it captured hopefully the shot

The driveway motion sencors worked I hunted for 20 hours since the attack , and after motion sencors 30 min and 1 down LOU
