The balance point

I went and left my home made air rifle rest at the GTA meet in Arkansas last May. I bought a rest to take its place and even though nothing else seemed to change, my spring guns were not performing like they used to from that adjustable creation. The usual one hole the HW97 and LGU made at 40 yards started to open up a little, not much, but just enough to make me ask why.

The answer came relatively quickly after some experimentation.

The home made rest naturally put the guns at the balance point. The spot where equal weight was distributed fore and aft when setting up for a shot. The new rest favored the front end of the gun and shifted the point at which it was supported.

When I put the gun at its balance point on the new rest, things went quickly back to normal and the groups came into play again.

I will not bore anyone with pictures, but if you are having trouble getting those spring things to operate the way you want them to, try finding the balance point and go from there.

Dude, when I test any pellet/rifle combo, I go the distance, IMO. 1st I go to 50yds (at my permission's land), and begin the quest of finding the best pellet and hold combo. I use sticks and bucket and the rifle barrel is already clean. And with each pellet that I try I clean the barrel to give each pellet a fighting and equal chance. I will shoot with my rifle in the sticks and the rifle is placed with the sticks in front of the trigger guard and shoot 10 shots then, i move the rifle an inch forward each time all the way to the front stock screws. This is what I do with my prosport. Now if the rifle doesn't have front stock screws like my RWS 54, then I go to the farthermost reach I feel comfortable with if I were actually holding it. Now that is what I do for every pellet that I try in any rifle. Thats probably why I always need pellets, lol. This process is long but well worth it IMO
