I went and left my home made air rifle rest at the GTA meet in Arkansas last May. I bought a rest to take its place and even though nothing else seemed to change, my spring guns were not performing like they used to from that adjustable creation. The usual one hole the HW97 and LGU made at 40 yards started to open up a little, not much, but just enough to make me ask why.
The answer came relatively quickly after some experimentation.
The home made rest naturally put the guns at the balance point. The spot where equal weight was distributed fore and aft when setting up for a shot. The new rest favored the front end of the gun and shifted the point at which it was supported.
When I put the gun at its balance point on the new rest, things went quickly back to normal and the groups came into play again.
I will not bore anyone with pictures, but if you are having trouble getting those spring things to operate the way you want them to, try finding the balance point and go from there.
